So, has anyone heard these speakers? I listened to some small floor standers (3 ft tall) from Boenicke today. I think they were the W8s, really big sound for something so small. Passive radiators on the side I think, but not sure. Most striking thing about them, and the entire line from the looks of their site, is that they're made of hardwood. I didn't think anyone actually did that.

Neat Acoustics, listened to some bookshelves from them, also impressive.

I can't comment on any of their recent products, but back when I was in the UK, Neat had some really value-challenging speakers in the 500 GBP range ... absolutely competitive with the Epos LS3/5A units. Caused quite a stir as I recall. If I wasn't already wedded to Linn's active drive stuff I'd have gone there quite happily.

Wouldn't surprise me if they have something interesting now.

The W5 starts at like $4k and goes up astronomically from there to $10k for the totl version with stands. I'm kind of glad I can't audition them :).

I'm really intrigued by Boenicke, from a design perspective. It's good to see a different approach, and I can't deny the levels of awesome I heard yesterday (speakers the size of tower fans can't hit that big in the bass, can they?). So, the approach, 1) uses two sandwiched blocks of CNC'd hardwood (whaaat? who does that?), 2) doesn't like to use cross overs, but uses the minimum when necessary 3) uses dipole "ambient" tweeters, 4) closed design.

Seems very interesting. I've not been a fan of rear firing tweeters in the speakers and rooms I've heard them in, but the rest looks very interesting. Only one coil and one cap total as a crossover for three drivers?

That article has details on the implementation, a little Sixmoons like but there's enough meat there.
