The Tera-Player has a filter, I guess similar to the butterworth filter that rolls treble down a db or two between 10k and 20k. Can't remember the exact amount. Charles use to have it posted on his site but removed it after he was banned from head-fi.

Reading reviews, the Lotoo paw 5000 is anemic when it comes to driving power.

Hmm, maybe the plenue 1 will be a good choice...

    Dear Kunlun,

For the PAW 5000 when the screen is off, all buttons are disabled except volume up, volume down on the side.

I forget to mention that this player has a full custom parametric equalizer. You don't see that often even with high end players.

Sorry if I sound too excited with the PAW 5000. Nowadays DAPs are getting more and more expensive so to see one that comes with a complete package and cost only $400 is almost a miracle.

My only regret that it cannot display album cover but I prefer that than dealing with laggy UI of Sony, Questyle, iBasso or FiiO DAPs.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Jeremiah

The discussion of the pros and cons of user interfaces on current DAPs seems a little incomplete. CW here seems to be that everything Apple has ever done has sucked, but after dealing with the Pono and AK Jr. interfaces, and playing with the Questyle in show conditions, I couldn't wait to get back to bad, evil ol' iOS. iPod Touch plus GO v2+ Infinity is likely to be my portable rig for a good long time, TYVM.

I thought you said the v2+ gets to hot for portable use?

Well, I've been using a 5.5 gen ipod (wolfson chip) and Apex Glacier for a while noe and it's reasonable. I think there's clearer sound to be had, but a lot of AK and others seem anemic and underpowered for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I may have been imprecise in what I said previously. I wouldn't necessarily want to carry it in a pocket all day, but on a desk or table or in a backpack or seat-back pocket, it's fine. And it gets less warm than the original aluminum-case GO 450, for sure. You need an oven mitt to pull that thing out of a USB port after 20 minutes..

I think the best DAP of 2014/2015 is a Lumia 520 for $30 :p No?

I'm still liking my Sony NWZ-A17 and still haven't tried anything to persuade me off of them. Of course, I haven't tried the more expensive stuff, but for the price, features, battery life and overall use and sound, these Sony's are pretty good. Are they AK Jr good? Probably not but I like them.

I seem to have been mistaken apologise, so did you get rid of your Jr?

Widows no like flac, see me bitching abouty old zune hd.

The ui and sound might be slightly better on the Jr. Though I can't say for sure I never used the a17

My new favorites are the Cowon Plenue P1 and the Cayin N5.

Shocked you are selling your AK Jr. I mean you are just going to use your phone to drive the v2+? Kind of interested to hear how to sound stage and imaging on the v2+ is versus the Jr.

Yeah, in using the V2+ Infinity in the prototype (original?) case I've had no issues with heat. Especially after getting used to the heat of the CDM. Now that you definitely do not want to carry in your pocket...

CDM is an amazing piece of kit. I have a pretty lengthy review of it over at HF. It's my reference portable when I want musicality over pure refinement, and for that I'd pull out the V2+ Inf.

CDM also allows you to roll tubes, with the Mullard's being my favorite so far.

However, the CDM is not as portable as many portables. Can't be stowed in a bag or pocket due to the heat it gives off, and the chassis can get up to 130F in transit (140F if playing while plugged in IME) so you have to be careful. That's the price you pay for the musical goodness of tubes!

Didn't get to try the Paw 5000, but did play with the Paw Gold. Personally I liked the QP1R better on my K10's. Given the UI on the QP1R is a bit off compared to the AK stuff, but then again it's SQ is awesome for much, much less $.

The QP1R seems very interesting, how much is it and when is it out?
