    holy balls!

    update on this.

anyone who has the ls50 DO NOT fully plug the back ports, it toally kills the bass, I unplugged mine out of curiosity (took out the middle foam piece so only the oval hollow foam is in the port) BAZINGA! bass and no more weird 100hz peak

I thought i needed a sub but these things go down to 400hz easily in a small room, when they were plugged 50hz basically was inaudible

    LOL!

Yup, clogging the port usually kills a good portion of the bass.

Port plugs are meant for reducing bass output. People who have excess gain from nearby walls might actually benefit from plugging the ports, I know I did.

mine are near walls, but having them fully plugged totally fudged up the bass response, i still have the hollow plugs in, running it naked in this small room made the bass fart really bad

ymmv i guess, just my experience

Would be helpful to post a picture of your desk setup to get better recommendations.

I read at many place that styrofoam are not good at all for room treatment... especially 1/2 inches thick cheap styrofoam.... Then i search for solution because my room was with a metallic echoing problem...the solutions were plenty on many site and more expansive each one than the other one.....I take that problem in my own hands without prejudice from so called expert.... My room is width 11 feet, height 7 feet and 8 inches, lenght 11 feet with 2 windows.... I decide to put all my past styrofoam wrapping audio gear boxes in usable pieces and i go to buy also undulated 1/2 inches pannels of 3 feet lenght and less than 2 feet wide, 8 pannels in all for a total of 10 dollars... i put them in an asymmetrical pattern around the room and behind the speakers...

Then a miracle occur against all experts, imaging was transformed in a better way , bass more punchy, highs more accute, i dont recognize my system nor my room... The stunning upgrade is the best i experienced and was like sorbothane extraordinary damping effect upgrading all my gear....If i had obey the expert i have read i will have invest in many hundred dollars at least.. By the way just before putting that solution in place i have ordered a sub because the mission v 60 were too much anemic in this room for me, now i almost regret that i have ordered already a Miller and Kreisel sub. because of that...i will enjoy this sub for sure but it will be now only a + not a necessity anymore... cheap styrofoam is sometimes extraordinary. Lesson learned.. Not one room is like another, the solution for one is not sometimes another solution... experiment is sometime all...For me...

    update:
this evening i double the 7 pannels of foam with seven others applied on them... Better bass and better impact of the sound...Spectacular resultswith this double panelsa little more than one inche thick of foam now.... .

the little piece of styrofoam behind the ported speakers made a big difference .... and i have put 2 pannels of foam that dont appear near the door...

You probably ended up with a primitive diffractor, which is a lot of better than a bare room.

yes i think so....but be it primitive it is very efficient, and i am very happy....Someday if i have the money i will try something more costly, but in the meantime i am so happy i dont think about anything else.... the fact is for me that it is the better upgrade i ever experience....:)

And i must say that is a confirmation that the room treatment and the control of vibration and resonance of the gear with sorbothane is a more spectacular upgrade than many other investment of money in a new piece of gear.... There is no comparison at all between the equipment i have now and the same before sorbothane and before room treatment....NO comparison at all...

p.s. no need of a mic. i use my ear...

Can you take a picture for us? For some reason your description makes me think you have styrofoam scarecrows scattered around your room.

I'd very much recommend investing in a measurement mic. Best 70$ you'll ever spend. Use it for troubleshooting and generating curves to brag about.

Or even only 10-20$ if you decide to go the DIY route with a WM-61A mic.
UMIK could be better since it comes with calibration, but the WM-61A is really not worse than any other uncalibrated <100$ mic. Plus it's super small.

If you want dependable results, a calibrated measurement mic is a must. You can make do with just about any small diaphragm electret mic, but you NEED to know the limitations of your equipment.

And yeah, UMIK is a decent choice.
