Has anyone tried the Oppo PM-3 and/or PMx2 with this amp? I know it doesn't do the best with some planars but AFAIK both of those are fairly efficient.

I can try my modded PM-2 tomorrow on the T3. (That is, if I remember to bring it, which I might not.)

I believe there is going to be at least one TIII at the NY mini-meet this weekend. I will have my PM-2 and I believe @Maxx134 will have his modded pair. Definitely looking forward to that pairing and will report back afterwards.

The bypass caps effect is real. I installed the AudioCap Thetas Doug mentioned, and after a few hours, there's a noticeable step up in clarity. Took some of the glare off the upper midrange too.

Edit: (Update) The improvement isn't subtle. I'm not sure how much of a difference some of the cheaper caps will make, but if its anything similar I would suggest including these in the kit to begin with.

Hmm ... interesting. I agree the effect of a cap bypass is not subtle. In the case of the Sonicap Gen II's, it was bad. Doug sent me some AudioCap Thetas, but I was gun-shy after my Sonicap experience. I will give the Thetas a shot tomorrow and if I experience similar results, then yes - I will look to including them in the kits.

T3 powered my modded PM-2 with ease. However, there's two things to look out for. First, the T3 might have made the PM-2 sound a bit too lush for some, though this might work well with stock pairs. Second, there are many tube amps that seem to soften the PM-2 just a bit by making transient response a bit slower and smoother. This could be a pro or con based on your tastes. I think the PM-2 pairs a bit better with something like the Black Widow, TBH. The PM-3, however, is a sharper and brighter sounding headphone, so it might work really well with the T3.

@Hands had some nice impressions of the TIII vs his EC Super7 over at the super-secret CO meet thread.. I've added it to the index, as well.

I just ordered some triple mica black plate GE 6072's after hearing a similar set on @SteelCannon 's Torpedo during the NY meet yesterday, and might be installing my CCS boards this weekend. I also heard the HE1K on my Torpedo III at the meet as well, and can echo @MisterRogers statement that it drove them quite well.

I'll probably play around with some bypass caps eventually once there's some more consensus on good pairings.

I was really surprised how well the he1000s sounded with the torpedo, the best I heard them sound at the meet.

I'm biased since I brought one of the two Torpedos at the meet, but I think it held its own very well against most of the pricier gear that we had there (but comparing it to the EC 2A3 would be a stretch...).

It was also really interesting comparing tubes as well, as we left my Torpedo stock and rolled tubes in @SteelCannon 's Torpedo while they were both connected to my Yggdrasil. The GE 6072s were the only set that seemed like a clear upgrade over the stock EH tubes to my ear in terms of slightly better bass definition.

Thanks Dr. Higgs.. I'm interested to hear more about tube rolling in the TIII.. b/c I'm trying to decide how many sets/flavors I'll need to keep me fat and happy. How critical are tubes in the TIII to get the best out of them? I get the sense it's an amp that's very transparent to the tube.. but do current TIII owners hear fairly significant differences in performance with a range of tubes?
