I'm not much of a fan of Neil Young but I agree, "Live Rust" is good.

The live download Springsteen recordings for sale are some very high quality stuff for audiophile Boss fans. Best are the pre-election recordings...Bruce has come off the rails after November election and it is spilling into the songs. In a live show back in 1976, he told the audience that he dodged the draft claiming homosexuality as disorder. Now, at age 70, he is the self declared leader of the underground resistance movement. He sang about the mansion on the hill guy being out of touch. Self fulfilling prophecy. The concerts from New Jersey 2016 summer are long and fabulous. No politics. Excellent recordings.

Billy Joel live at Shea Stadium is a fun live album.
    Gordon Lightfoot Live

I know its over played but I still love "Hard Rain" Dylan live, though many fans prefer the unreleased version. I do like Dylan "Completely Unplugged" bootleg.

Some of the other suggestions -- agreed. Clapton unplugged.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes "Men Without Women" is a fantastic show with Stevie Van Zandt joining. Wow. The energy is electric. 6 horn session and very high quality recording.

OMG i LOVE clapton MTV unplugged so awesome.

BTW does anyone know where to get a good recording (if such exists) of eagles' mtv unplugged (i think it's called "second night"). That rendition of hotel california is AMAZING. But I can't find a good clean recording of it (the one I have is too dirtt). Or do I just buy the CD and rip it?

Speaking of which, I just managed to find/get the CD of "hell freezes over" which was the album of eagles i "grew up with"..good times!

    The Velvet Underground Live 1969

    th (1).jpg

"The unanimous opinion was that we were 10 times better live than we were on records" (Sterling Morrison, April 1981)

Sadly, there is little in the way of well-recorded live performances by the Velvets. This double CD set, though crudely mastered, is a combination of sets at Cole Ave Dallas and the Matrix, San Francisco. The performances are uncharacteristically quiet and distortion free but still potent.

About a year ago, a 4 CD set of the Matrix sets was released. Great stuff, I love it, but it's really for die-hard fans.

Great choice with The Velvet Underground Live 1969, @Wilson !

I made a cassette of the LPs when it came out. I probably listened to it 100 times. (I bought the CDs when it came out, as well.)

I don't think that I can be quite objective about The Velvet Underground - The Complete Matrix Tapes. It includes all of Live 1969. Better versions of the tapes were found for this and it was well mastered. The sound quality got a nice boost, plus all of the additional material makes for a great and unexpected release. But I am a die-hard VU fan. :)

If anyone is tempted to buy The Complete Matrix Tapes, I recommend that you don't wait around. Looking on amazon I see that it can be bought new from sellers as low as $30 shipped and there are quite a few selling it at really high prices. I think it may be OOP already. (Ebay has prices all over the spectrum, also.)

Joni Mitchell being just gorgeous on the BBC in 1970:

Neil Young, again from the BBC:

Maybe the Ultimate Live event? The Band, The Last Waltz

PS. Reflections from a 7th decade:

Joni Mitchell: Forever young, but born wise.

Neil Young: WTF made him think he knew so much at that age? But hey, the tunes are good.

Those old BBC recordings still have me wondering what was going on back then at the BBC. The sound and the performances tend to be outstanding on the LPs/EPs/CDs that I have.

Not the best quality, but they really rocked this performance. So real. Back before Chicago decended into popy garbage.

And this... that guitar solo. The band lost so much energy when they lost Terry Kath. Jimmy Hendrix said he was better than himself.

I agree with your number 1, John is the real deal... anyone who wrote him off for pop/Wonderalnd was a fool. This guy is the best I have heard in a very long time. I have seen him with the best in the world today and he does a bit more than hold his own. Buddy Guy and BB come to mind, you can se the look on their face, it's pure respect and a little wtf? If you haven't heard John playing with Gary Clark Jr. I suggest you check that out too. GKJ is something special as well. LONG LIVE THE BLUES!!

I just stumbled across this a few days ago. Mind, blown. The tempo Wynton sets is insane, but O’Connor and Vignola are more than equal to the task.

Stumbled on this last night browsing Audiostream. I listened to the entire album straight through and couldn't stop. The venue adds so much to the recording and the vocals and instrumentals are pleasingly intimate.

Cowboy Junkies - The Trinity Session

The Trinity Session is the second album by alternative rock band Cowboy Junkies, released in 1988.
The music was recorded inside Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity on November 27, 1987, with the band circled around a single microphone. - Wikipedia.

I might be alone in this, but I hate Live recordings. Why would I want to listen to a mediocre recording of imperfectly performed music if I'm not actually there?

I love live music. If I'm there.

I guess I'm just an uncultured charlatan.

There are a few live recordings here and there that I really like, but for the most part, I really dislike listening to recordings of live music.

Just to be an equal opportunity asshole, I'll pick a few of the links here at random.
    • Chicago: Jammy trash. I went to a Chicago concert decades ago and loved it. I was in the front row and nearly lost my mind watching the guitarist.
    • Cowboy Junkies: Haunting. Really enjoy it. But I don't really consider sessions like this to be Live.
    • Wynton Marsalis: Fun to watch, but I'd never just listen to the audio.
    • Boban Markovic: I'm not familiar with this person. Nor do I want to become familiar with him/her. Was this just a shitload of dudes with homemade horns playing in front of a drunken crowd?
    • The Band: How did someone sneak a cell phone back in time to record this?
    • John Mayer: Where the Light is: Admittedly, this isn't bad. I might intentionally listen to this one.
    • Jason Isbell: Not terrible, but I imagine the studio version of this is pretty incredible. I'm going to look him up and probably never listen to the live version ever again.
    • Taylor Swift: Pretty decent recording quality and performance, but I don't like her songs.
Now that I've made a bunch of enemies, I'll offer one up.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live at Montreux '82
Great not just because of the performance, but because he was nobody then and played like a frickin' champ while getting booed. I like this Live performance because it meant something, not because it matches the recording quality of the studio.
