I used to be obsessed with the technological side of W.W. II. The P51 Mustang served long after W.W. II, it was that good of an all-round fighter plane. It is my favourite. The best fusion of British and American technology at that time.

The photos above and below are from a cool article about hypersonic aircraft (see here).

As a kid I went hiking in Snowdonia in north Wales. It was terrifying to be up on a mountainside and to have fighter jets fly in the valley below us. Man, they were fast and loud. It'd be fun to watch the low-level training flights in the nearby "Mach Loop"

(edit: there's an Osprey in that video!)

Like so many sites these days it tries to take over your browser with scripts, but it offers a few worthwhile stories/pics/videos about all things military aviation both past and present:

That video of the fighter jets doing low elevation training was so beautiful! Loved it.

If I fought in WW2 and was willing to kill (in this life I would have helped but refused to kill) I would have been a pilot and probably died based on the numbers/statistics.

100%. I remember reading a book about them as a kid and apparently they leak fuel sitting on the tarmac. The fuselage heats up so much during flight that they need to allow space for expansion.

These highly detailed die-cast models are from a company called Model-Power. Sadly, they don’t make these anymore.

A trip to the Airforce Museum at Dayton, Ohio can be a wonderful experience to see these machines in flesh. While Blackbird is my all-time favorite, the one that took my breath away was the Raptor.

Thank you, that's now on the list of places to visit. The Air and Space Museum in DC is one of my favorite places in the world. I've loved it since I was a kid - you can touch a moon rock! - and I always call in when in town. Here's the Hughes H-1 Racer, which is a beauty (and, in 1935, the record holder for the world speed record):

Thanks for sharing this. I am just learning about the Hughes H-1, as it wasn't until a few years back, I started developing a liking towards 1st gen and vintage aircrafts.

DC is one of the cities that I missed to visit, when I lived in the US. Living in Texas however, I got to visit the NASA space centre (Houston) and USS Lexington (Corpus Christi) at least a couple of times.

I live less than 20 miles from Ft Indiantown Gap. Cycle out that way all the time. It is, so I am told, the only facility east of the Mississippi where the A-10s can do live fire practice. So have seen them plenty of times. They will come up the valley on the other side of the mountain from me; sometimes do pretty low altitude runs hugging the mountainside.

That GAU-8 chaingun is spooky (and frightening). The first couple times I heard it the planes were not in my field of view, and I couldn't imagine what made that noise. 65 30mm rounds per second, that's what makes that noise.

Edit: have been to the Air Force museum in Dayton. Highly recommended
