I’m a fairly big ambient fan. ObsiCO mentioned Brambles and that is a fave. I have a thing for found sounds in music. Also check out Slow Meadow’s self-titled album, the band called A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Systems/Layers by Rachel’s, Jòhann Jòhannson, maybe Christoph Berg, Nils Frahm’s latest “All Melody” and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s latest async. Also you might want to check out Serein records other artists. Mostly this genre. http://shop.serein.co.uk/music

Damn, I like music too much to pick only 5, much less go into 'defining' types of music (I'm not a fan of labels, although they're useful...I just like to listen & enjoy).

Thant being said, this is a cool idea (IMO) so I'll post a few different ones that have been on repeat lately.

One of my favorite 'types' is Instrumental Rock/Fusion (Beck, Di Meola, Satriani, Vai, Morse, Et al)
One of the lesser know that's a favorite is the Travis Larson Band...fine musicianship from this trio:

There's something about female vocalists that I love, and there are a whole lot to choose from, but lately, it's been Regina Spektor more often than not. Always a good recording and an interesting musical vision.

Classic Rock is such a catch phrase and encompasses a broad swath of styles. The list of bands would be too huge to list
( rom Aerosmith to Zeppelin and everything in between) but one that I don't see much here is the Doors, which I have a soft spot for.

Jazz, in all it's variations is amazing to me. I'm drawn to musicianship, and Jazz really has some of the finest musicians I've ever heard. Here's one of the cuts that got me in to it:

And if you're going to talk about musicianship, IMO you can't leave out classical. Again, there are so many types of classical, and each has it's own beauty.

Too many to choose from, so I picked an old favorite

Again this doesn't even scratch the surface...World, EDM, Ambient, Punk,Metal, Folk, Hard Rock, Prog Rock, Alt, Grunge, Blues, R&B, Etc. Etc.

    Very cool thread...thanks.

Picking out favorites is difficult for me. I like some many different types of music and what I like within each genre tends to change regularly, but I'll give it a shot.

Jazz takes on much of my listening time. I like all the female jazz divas but tend to gravitate towards artist who are a little edgier.

Patricia Barber: The Cole Porter Mix

I also listen to a lot of instrumental Jazz.

    Tomas Stanko Quartet: December Avenue

Folk/American is also a popular genre for me.

    The Honeycutters: Me Oh MY

Blues has always been on my playlist.

    Older Muddy Waters: Folk Singer

Newer Doug McLeod: There's a Time

Jazz. Only jazz. That's all I have time for.
These days I mainly listen to free and improvised jazz, but I love swing, be-bop, hard-bop, post-bop, modal and all other different sub-genres as well.
I'm a completist when it comes to certain artists and labels and I've recently sold off gear to be able to focus on picking up the jazz titles I want to own.
If I have to listen to anything else than jazz it's Led Zeppelin, Rachmaninoff's piano concertos or anything by Beethoven.

You seem like a man after my own heart. Many shared favourite styles. Look forward to hearing more of your recommendations in the "listening now" and other similar threads.

Love that! His version of Space Oddity is also worth a listen, as is his acapella rendition of Lonely Guy (which I tried emulating and failed at. Miserably. Haha)

Wow this will be hard. Okay my attempt at this:

Soundtrack - The Crow Original Soundtrack - yeah I can’t go a month without hearing something
Ska - Sublime - Sublime - shit ended way too soon
Alternative - Mother Love Bone - Mother Love Bone - yeah I need to get more upbeat
Blues - Three Kings (Albert, Freddie, and B.B.) plus Muddy Water, Buddy Guy ... crap I can keep going here.
Blues Rock - SRV, Clapton, Duane Allman (okay this is sad too)
Hendrix - Jimi Hendrix (he gets his own genre)

Okay so following instructions isn’t my strong suit.

I would like to hear more Jazz

@obsiCO - have a listen to Cinematic Orchestra. If you want something a little more upbeat, stuff on the Guidance label is more loungey, the Compost label more jazzy. Late 90s-early 2000s.

Something a bit different but probably also suitable for your intended use: The Penguin Cafe Orchestra (modern/odball string quartet).

Hmm... only 5. How am I going to do this.

Is "Everything but country" a genre? No?

Then I guess I'll just stick with the classics that are always somewhere in my rotation:

But I have a real weak spot for anything horn right now... which is not well reflected above. So I could cheat and mention Earth, Wind and Fire; Chicago; The Blues Brothers; Brian Setzer Orchestra; Blood Sweat & Tears; etc...

But that would be cheating, and I would never do that ;)

I almost forgot... the genre I want to get a better handle on is Funk. I welcome any and all suggestions

While I do listen to a few genre, I tend to get stuck on a theme - in my head. Point is I would happily listen to the full album, which each of these songs is from, any day:
