Fwiw I think @Priidik found Wasapi push to sound better than ASIO (or was that someone else) and Bug head Emperor to sound better than both JRiver and Foobar.

The newest version didn't work for me on Win7 but I think I found an older version somewhere that worked for me. I think it worked fine for me on Win10.
As far as the sound's concerned, let's say that I found it interesting and thought it had potential but there are lots and lots of settings which might or might not change the sound. I might compare again later but at the moment I don't care much for digital.

I think it was the "Studio quality check version" linked on the website that worked for me. No install, you just open the InfinityBlade.exe. There are many different versions and the newer ones are supposed to bring sound improvements. It takes forever to load a song (this also depends on the settings) and the UI is pure shit, it's all a bit weird.

Surprised ZD hasn't passed by here yet. When usb is involved, forget mac and windows, and go linux. I advise you to try daphile on a usb stick, as I did. You won't look back.

People saying there are differences between music players make me question their other impressions.

I wonder if I wrote software with an IBM XT circa UI named DoubleDongWhackAttack and provided documentation in Japanese, people would say it sounded awesome.

Probably... I mean DongWhackAttack was good, although it was kind of limited by mono only playback support. I've been anxiously awaiting DoubleDong's release, to properly enjoy my stereo tracks... I will brush up on my Japanese.

If you can manage to engineer tubes that fit into a USB port, I think you'd make some money.

Looking up APIs to enumerate the output devices. Only supporting WAV. Real audiophiles who use DDWA don't use FLAC.

You guys realize that there's an entire technological field called teledildonics that this would be appropriate for right?

If your drivers and client don't suck, it's better to use event than push- it's way more resource-efficient and allows for a less whacky threading setup. Essentially, it's a more modern way to do things, with the driver managing its own consumption of data and raising an event when it wants more from the client, which lets the client get away with doing a lot less of the critical work. The net effect is less complexity in the time-critical parts of playback, which is worth having.

Obviously, push mode tends to be present for backwards compatibility with old/poorly-written software, but if it's properly supported, it's event-driven mode is nice to use.

Is there any reason why one would choose ASIO over Wasapi? I used to mess with Asio4All in Foobar but Wasapi is idiot-proof (which I find to be a useful feature somehow). Just adjust latency to avoid glitches; set and forget as it were. Isn't bit perfect... bit perfect?

ASIO4All is not really ASIO. ASIO is only worth it if your device actually supports it. It's a special kind of driver that allows low level access to the device. ASIO4All just emulates that capability and wraps it into the regular windows audio subsystem. Don't use that.
