Hi, @Gazny (Tom) and myself (Sina) decided to do a podcast together talking about good sound. I figured members here might get a kick out of it. We're only doing this for fun, there are no commercial affiliations or sponsors and never will be.

If you do check it out please let us know what you think, good or bad. We had fun, have more episodes on the way and I plan to bring on a few industry guests too. Sorry about the few audio issues, we'll get better at it.

p.s. if there's something you'd like to hear us discuss, email in at [email protected]

I did not know that the streaming services were adding some EQ to playback. I thought the differences people mentioned were CODEC stuff which I admit I cant hear the difference in past efforts so didn't really pay attention to these discussions of different streaming services sounding better (outside of file compression).
Id listen to a certain album on Apple Music and it sounds a little different than I recall from both available masters on CD. Perhaps Apple adds another layer of EQ to their lossless streaming in order to justify the difference to subscribers.

Art Dudley sounds like he'd be a good influence for writing any future reviews. Id like to spin for fun or better try to acknowledge or find the positives of my disagreements in certain equipment. Noted: I will read Art Dudley's Valencia speaker review. Have link?

@k4star sounds like you got used to the Apple Airpods Pro, or maybe there was a firmware update that changed the sound to your liking, or simply it was your mood?

I think had a few things Id like to comment on from early in the podcast but I still wasnt sure if you guys were serious or trolling. @Gazny I suspect is responsible for a few troll accounts here.

LOL at "listening to Wilsons on a chair dead center". @Gazny

Your albums recommendations at end I will check out on Apple Music.

btw I do equipment reviews using ALAC from CD rips of the best masters as approved by Steve Hoffman forums.

Hey k4star where is your blog or whatever?

Which streaming service is best? :D

Totally agree youtube is the shit. Love watching old historical music videos of live music.

@Gazny Describing music as "cutting edge" I find mildly off putting. There is a 100 years of albums, more than you could ever hear or even know. A lot of them were "cutting edge" at some point. @Gazny cutting edge of pompous. Kidding. You guys were great! Loved it. Thanks for sharing. Want more!

Thanks Philimon, personally I just use the streaming service that fits my lifestyle, for now it is Spotify. They are all great in my opinion. and I believe it is a matter of ergonomics and UX. Here is the Dudley article. I seem to forgotten to include it in the shownotes.

Between SHF and even the loudness database those are how I have decided to pick up some masters, but sometimes I am lucky when a album has a single release.

as for the music I had included them in the youtube time cards, but they don't seem to pop out and it may not be the best for a podcast format.

As for trolling accounts, history shows that people have tried to evade mods in the past and weren't successful

I think the major theme (this episode) was chasing the audio dragon vs what's practical and will ultimately bring the most enjoyment aka the crux of the matter (where do you go for episode2?). So for example, a $2000 desktop system that you might use once a week for an hour vs a $200 Airpod Pro that you might use an hour every day because its so damn convenient. I think most around here probably have multiple rigs geared to what functions best with consideration for budget and space etc and fun. Around this too there was some discussion as to how people approach buying gear including influences and expectations etc.

@purr1n paraphrased said recently that "headphones are a horrible hobby robbing us of interaction with other humans". Something Im still reconciling. Also touched lightly upon in the podcast. Good stuff.

Also @k4rstar said some very offensive things about compression drivers. (will look into since I'm listening and enjoying some at this moment)

    Im not sure.
I think @k4rstar explains thats its just a coincidence. He said he used the moniker MrGoodSound for some forum or blog so thats the origin. Wondering if k4rstar considered another name for the podcast due to the shared names.

For now Youtube and Soundcloud, we'll try to get on Spotify.

I address this in the first 10 mins I think :)

    Thanks. Blog is here: https://cheaptubeaudio.blogspot.com/search/label/Column-mrgoodsound

I think TIDAL on High (not Hi-fi) sounds the closest to the CD. Unfortunately it's also the worst in terms of UX.

How highly I rate the AirPod Pros does depend on my mood (current state of perception) and where I'm listening. I wouldn't want to listen to an entire LP with them sitting at home but like I shared on the show, I was able to reach the 4th level of perception listening to them during my meditation retreat.

The equipment is just a part of the communication channel, and sometimes herculean efforts of the mind+spirit (mostly unconscious) can overcome large deficiencies in fidelity.

I was joking when I asked about which is best streaming service. In the podcast you mentioned how you didnt like that question.

Watching old live performances from way back in the day is fun. Not just seeing a live performance by the original artist but its also a time machine because its a glimpse into culture's past.

@Gazny and @k4rstar this is a great start! I loved hearing about your experiences and your setups and philosophy on audio and audio gear. I’ve recently had to strip my system down to entry level or near entry level essentials and it’s also made me rethink how high up the ladder I want or need to go.

Looking forward to the next entry!

This was a fun episode for me. A lot of fun and learning. Special guest really taught me a thing or two

if you just want the music here it is

next time I will just say f**k it we will do it live. this was a great episode for me to learn and grow as an editor. Imagine how many times I had to hear this, I will never look at a movie the same again. I was lowballing before when I would say I heard the previous episode 12 times, this one could easily top that. Damn anyways sorry for anyone who heard audio glitches. I deeply apologize. Remember this is a growing experience, and fk it we will do it live is much better than the mess I had to fix.

Hardly noticed. Audio was way better than first episode.

Dont know anything about vinyl. Never heard.

Learned that azimuth is a real word and not the name of a wizard.

We had a few issues with gates on our VoIP software early on, but I believe we fixed that issue. And we are doing steady progress. Thank you everyone who is with us along this ride.

Thanks @Philimon for directing me here - i enjoyed the casual style of the discussion and being a tinkerer at heart and someone who regularly repairs things, I appreciate the general approach.

Neat tip on the SMMC3 , I have been looking at cartridges as I get to the final set up stages of my Linn . I impulse bought an ortofon quintet which I don't think is going to outperform my vintage AQ404B

Not sure if Parker frequents the forum but I would be curious on the thoughts about retipping a stylus - my cart uses an elliptical diamond nude on a hollow sapphire cantilever - my reason for looking about is because it is old and when I pulled it off my current deck, the system sounded much better with a good old AT95E but I suspect that the azimuth was off and the cart was too heavy for the arm - all about synergy

thanks for the informational chat ..dB

II just wanted to say I am really excited for ETA and this KGLW track, I read somewhere it is a full remix or
"Re-Write" album. I wasn't a huge fan of the Butterfly 3000 but I loved the I'm In Your Mind Fuzz album

Tom: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Black Hot Soup (DJ Shadow “My Own Reality” Re-Write)

Ev: Lethal League OST - Scream

Sina: Fontaines D.C. - Jackie Down The Line

RE: Episode 2. I forgot to mention that the special guest is a audio(phile) repair tech, engineer, and audio nerd himself. His one story about repairing some old out of production monster piece of gear that took soooooo much time and required him to basically write himself a manual was epic and an eye opener to how some of this old but awesome tech can be very costly to refurbish (was it an amp? I dont remember). Special guest gave that customer a good deal with one flat fee because it appears to have taken weeks of time to repair.

    ——————————

RE: Episode 3. I was wondering when you guys would be back. Good to see you again. And this episode’s topic I can definitely relate (headphones). Shocked that Ev was able to bring down the price of his new headphone to $300. Exciting product.
