These are very dense, a far cry from the usual open-cell foams. Worth a try.

no comment on the added sibilance in the 10k/14k range of the original mod?

For sure All mods proposed here( and the HD800S) add a few db in that range. If you're sensitive to those frequencies (I'm not and to my ears it does not induce sibilances) then you're fucked until you find something to tame that range.

I'll probably do some more attempts with the SuperDupont Resonator in order to see if can achieve something better and after that I'll waiting the SBAF absorber.

Aren't those ranges more 'air' than 'sibilance'?

This is really excellent and exciting work!
I hope somebody is able to make multiples of the final mod,
because it's starting to look more complex than the original Shure tips mod...

This stuff is really exciting! I just got a pair of HD800's and fully expect to be modding them at some point (probably soon). These are definitely my favorite high end headphone. I've got a set of punches on the way ;)

How many here are trying this mod?
I have done the Shure PA910 tips and have 4 extra pair for anyone who wants to try.
    Pm me for details.

Thanks so much for all your hard work on this sorrodje! Now you've got me feeling tempted to order a set of punches as well. Then again, from the standpoint of striking a happy medium as between what is happening at 6k and ~15k, the tip mod is arguably the best of all the curves.

Is the green line based on your original tip mod, or is this with the newer 3mm version that sits with space beneath it? Thanks in advance!

@dubiousmike. Still the same measurements of the first attempt. I did measure the 3 or 4mm tip with space behind it and the bottom of the hole and I didn't notice much improvement. For the simpliest method, page #1 is still valid. Just make sure the tip is installed flush to the top.

For best results, the new SuperDupont resonator with creato + felt is recommended. Yes the last version is much more complicated to produce. With the right tool it's easy to DIY though.

I already have improved it a bit though but I still have ideas to try and measure.

So my advice is still to wait a bit until we find what we can call "our best effort". Then , I'll propose to build and send those resonators to everyody who wants one. I think ZD bought the punches so maybe he will be able to produce some or to loan the tool for someone in the US who have enough time to produce what's necessary.

From the graphs, your latest iteration of the mod seems to have already superceeded & eclipsed the 800S resonator.. (!)

Nope. but I've some hope the ultimate mod will be closer than currently. Wait and See. I ordered the right material but I'll have to wait before next experiences. Me and My family will be in vacation next week. No Audio, no mods , no tweaks , no more sweep tones. Skiing and rest and happy moment wth family and friends.

To illustration the progress we made Since the first mod :

    HD800 comparison all mods.jpg

    Red is HD800 Stock
Orange is fist SD resonator with the tips ( Never achieved with another pair of tips)
Light Green is the Resonator as described in post #188 and #189
    Yellow is the last version.
    Deep green is the 800S.

More focused on the good Frequency range:
    HD800 comparison all mods focused.jpg

Last mod leaves us with similar 4 and 5 khz but still 2 db more than the 800S. 4db less than the HD800 though. 4khz untouched , 5 khz similar to HD800S.....

One last attempt and I'm done. We're already very close to our original goal. Drawback is still Sub bass distorsion though. (Same as my previous measurements)

Ok so while we wait, has anyone tried any other tips?

I have the Shure tips, and they really cut deep into the sound.

They were preferred but I feel they take a bit too much of the upper mids out as well,
So I am currently using some Sennheiser foam tips:

Untill the final mod comes thru.
They are the only other tips that make a positive difference for me..

In the past I always complained about the HD800s not having enough body to the mids,
And finally now I can hear both more clarity and substsubstance to the mids.

I have done two hd800s with positive results already.

Unfortunately I have no more Sennheiser tips to give out, but I have 3 more pairs of Shure tips to give out just PM me .
    :)

Has anyone tried Sennheiser IE 800 tips? Isn't that what the S is based on?

I don't think the IE800 tips are useful if they are just plastic tips..
    Need foam tips..

Did you measure the HD800S distortion by any chance @sorrodje?

OK. I'm done with that Mod. I tried shitloads of various SD and I think I've found the final version ( still the same than a few post ago to be honest).

Basically it's still the same than described in post #188 and above but closed at the bottom by a 14mm disc of thick paper or thin carboard ( think the carboard used for business card) . I kept the 6mm hole at the top . 7mm one did not bring improvements I hoped. I tried 1mm creato instead of paper/cardboard and it does not work as well as the cardboard...

I'm living with that resonator for 3 weeks now. My HD800S has gone and I don't miss it anymore.

    Final results in FR :

    HD800SD_FR.jpg

Compared to HD800 Stock (red) and HD800S (green)

    HD800S vs HD800stock vs HD800SD.jpg

Still 1,5 db more than the HD800S ...

let's remember Left and right channels of my HD800S had different FR... so let's compare HD800S Left channel and my HD800SD :

    HD800SD vs HD800S_L.jpg

Fairly close isn't it ? those measurements have been done with three identical SD absorber so results are definitely consistent.

    Drawback in distorsion :

    HD800S:
    HD800S distorsion.jpg

    HD800SD distorsion:
    HD800SD Distorsion.jpg

Undoubtly higher. especially in sub bass area. :/

BTW, it seems Alpha program is over and It's time for Beta . I'm able to make a little bunch of those for Beta testers ( preference will be given to people with measurements rig and/or experienced Friend who can give us good feedback) . making dozens of those resonator are a pain in the ass to be honest. so I'll make 10 ( + a few more if necessary pairs for now.

For those 10 pairs , I'll ask you shipping costs and that's all. I can ship them worlwide.

Who want to play with my Superdupont Absorber , measure it and give us feedback? (preference will be given to people with measurements rig and/or experienced Friend who can give us good feedback)

    1. Frenchbat ( SD already made)
    2. ... ?
    3. ...
