    I'm not sure what shouty means, but I've always gotten bored with the 650s (sold twice), but still on my original pair of 600s. I can't hear worth a shit though; that's what 35 years of wind noise and rock concerts will do for you.

    You sound like a perfect candidate for an HD700.

    I'm A/Bing HD600/HD650 with Woo Audio WA6-SE this week.
    On some tracks the HD650 is just too dark, while the HD600 is perfect. And some tracks are too bright with HD600 so it sounds shouty...
    Its a tough battle...

    I guess a modded HD650 might do the trick

    The 3kHz peak on my new HD600 is a bit more than I'd like out of my M2/M2 stack (usually characterized as neutral or slightly bright, I think). I'm hesitant to label it "shouty"—though I did sound that way at first (coming from K7XX)—as I got used to it very quickly and I haven't found it bothersome… except for Corin Tucker for whom bothersome is probably the intended effect.

    Is there even a true end-game setup with this hobby? I thought it just goes on until it reaches the point where your wallet gives out.

    Using EQ: HD800 > HD650 > HD600 (when the choice is limited between these 3)

    without EQ: HD600 > HD650 > HD800 (when the choice is limited between these 3)

    I'd say with quality tube amp and R-2R dac even HD650 surpasses high-end active nearfields by quite a bit at key strenghts of what headphones usually have over speakers.

    @mtoc:
    Technically modded HD800 surpasses (old driver) HD650 in every single audible parameter save for tonal balance, if we call that a technical parameter.
    Some look for most speaker like soundstage, then HD800 is better choice. Tonally HD650 is probably closer to most studio monitors, but even these have problems in tonal balance. Live unamped acoustical performances are still closer to real with HD800 to my ears. Most electronica or metal etc have way less issues with HD650 though.

    Buying advice:
    I'd take both, esp when going ::end game:: which means $£€+++ in whatever way you look at it. Even diy-ing won't save that much cash tbh.
    300$ for HD650 isn't gonna change much compared to what the chain before it is going to cost.

    When I play Bitches Brew on a HD600 the trumpet always plays directly in my face. It sounds like the instrument is just a few inches away from your ear. With the AKG it's a bit further away.
