Headstage: Why I really don't give a crap about it (or don't understand the fuss)

I feel a lot of new music particularly electronic music is now mixed for headphones. I wonder how people feel they sound on speakers. can't comment myself as I don't use speakers with space constraints.

Well, you might like this then.

As someone who mix electronic music, I wouldn't say it's mixed for headphones. The thing is, clubs have mono systems, and you want your song to translate the best it can to it. Less stereo separation = less phase cancelation. (Even tho some songs are ridiculously wide, but you wont hear that from top producers)

    @Topic

I don't see the point in using crossfeed for casual listening, it narrows sound too much for me, but it's very useful for mixing when you balance things.

A few of my own observations:
    • Speaker imaging and soundstage get the most things right, but depends on how the room and gear is set up.
    • Headphone imaging and headstage are limited to a single unmoving perspective, no head movement/localization, and a flawed perspective at that (no natural crossfeed)
    • Speaker imaging and soundstage are capable of true holography
    • Shitty upstream speaker components will make it seem like the sounds emanate directly from the cabinets
    • Great upstream speaker components will make sounds 'emanate' from different parts of the room, and the cabinets disappear
    • Excellent headphone imaging, defined as the ability to delineate and 'place' elements onto the headstage can result in a more resolving experience irrespective of the size of the headstage
    • All things being equal, a headphone with limited imaging ability will delineate and 'place' easier on a larger headstage than a smaller headstage
    • The right size headstage (not too big, not too small) can make a greater variety of genres sound right
Given the above, I will have to agree that it's trivial in the larger scheme of things (but what is not), but disagree that discussions of differences are nonsensical or that there isn't a reason to fuss - there is a small reason to fuss. Finding the right balance between nuance and oversimplification is difficult, in this case I feel we need some nuance.

Well, if you make sure to scrape all the lacquer off of the hammer felts, you'll come pretty close to binging it's sound closer to
one of Gould's "wannabe Harpsipianos" ( I think a Piano Technician should have just smacked Gould's fingers with his Tunning Hammer told him "No" the first time he requested it & been done with it) (I can't remember anyone ever asking Bach how he felt about a modern Hamburg Steinway's sound... OH that's right he did'nt have that option)

He,he ,he .... I've honestly forgotten what the topic of this thread was supposed to be about (I seem to do that quite often on this website,as more often then not , I simply can't relate to much of what's being said (He says while enjoying some very nice LvB piano trios)

Btw, isn't it part of the fun that headphones are totally different than speakers in that manner?

Well, it adds to the confusion and disorientation leaving lots of room for dialog, anyway.

Face recognition SW proly has evolved but from what I recall it may consume quite a bit of resources, depending. Who knows.

All in all, that stuff refined should be pretty darn awesome!

You can order a tracker that can be attached on the headband, so camera is not necessary.

    Yup.

Amps seems to make a huge difference in the capability of the headphone to show this aspect too.

    Interesting discussion.

I have a Realiser and I think the head tracking is over rated. Yes, of course, in theory it should make a huge difference, but for me (and many other Realiser owners) I don't find it really makes much of a difference once your brain gets used to the imaging reproduction.

What I mean is that at first, the head tracking is very helpful in "training" your brain to interpret what your ears are hearing. The head tracking helps reinforce the localization of the sound source in the room. But, once you're used to it, turning off the head tracker doesn't make the image collapse or get any worse. Your brain understands what you're hearing and the image and localization is just as good.

With the Realiser, the tracking is done via IR and has a limited range and range of angles. And the transmitter runs out of batteries pretty fast. So there are issues that aren't worth it to me. Other Realiser owners I have talked to also don't use the head tracker. (Some do and swear by it too.)

All I am saying is that on paper, it seems like head tracking would be leaps and bounds better than without, but in practice, for me, it doesn't make a difference.

With regard to the imaging of Out Of Your Head or the Realiser (which are basically the same), with custom measurements, the imaging can be every bit as good as speakers. You can hear speakers that are 4 or more feet away from you and clearly hear the location of the sound source. But without custom measurements using your ears, it is hit or miss. So with regard to Marv's diagram, the Out Of Your Head/Realiser DSP is a huge range from bad to almost as good as speakers depending on the person and the measurements.

If anyone ever wants to setup an experiment where we do measurements in a room with speakers and can directly A/B compare the sound of the real speakers vs. the sound of the headphones with Out Of Your Head/Realiser DSP, I'd be happy to do that. I have done it LOTS of times and people really get a kick out of it. You will be surprised at what's possible.

The two settings I like are the ones that minimize the room effects - one is a studio environment, the other is something similar. I feel OOYH does better with multi-channel movie content than with stereo music.

Why bother buying spending $4-5k a Smyth Realizer, $3-4k on a "TOTL" headphone, and $3k on a "TOTL" headphone amp when you get a speaker setup that will do a real soundstage in FRONT of you with x2 to x10 better IMAGING PRECISION and x0.85 to x1.00 RESOLUTION of headphones for LESS MONEY with MONEY LEFT OVER for a speaker room (if you are a renter).

Besides, if you have speakers, you can have parties and invite girls (or boys) over. You can also listen to music together with a girl (or boy).

Seriously. Time to expand your horizons, given the stupendous increasing costs of merely "decent" headphone gear.

My proposal isn't a commandment. It's merely option that headphiles should seriously explore, especially when "TOTL" headphones (most with serious issues if you are from the speaker world) are costing more than very good speakers. With the amounts I've seen being spent, some of that could be reallocated to getting your own place instead of sharing walls, even in high rent areas such as SF or LA.

I've read too many lame excuses for why people don't want to go to speakers. They are just excuses. Like "headphones are more resolving", when I know the gear that they own really isn't all the resolving to begin with. The only reason I resurrected my headphone rig was because of the transition to SBAF and the need for content. Going forward, I am hoping @sorrodje, @ultrabike, and @Hands pick up where I left off.

I will always have a headphone rig somewhere. Probably high value stuff like the Night Blues Mini, Vali 2, maybe even a multi-bit Modi one day if Schiit could ever figure out how to cram all that shit in there. But the transition back to speakers (and speaker building) should be permanent now.

Yup, my first post was a set up for this. I'm just tired of one crappy headphone (or headphone amp) after another at unreasonably high prices.

Were you talking with Paul McGowan? http://www.psaudio.com/pauls-posts/making-room/

I never give much thought to headstage. I know that generally I like don't like being stuffed in a can, or having a wall of sound at my ears. In other words I need a little "room", but I never spend any time trying to pick out the sound stage.

Audeze LCD-2/3 etc... often feels too closed.
007/009 is about right for me.
Face tweeter HD800 is more open to me, but not always in a good way.

    K1000 FTW! :)

You realize that the next thing I am going to suggest is that you throw away all your DACs.
