This was rhetorical question, they are discontinued for a long time now.

Should get a Superbestaudiofriends "Recommended amps for HE-6"!
I'm looking for a new amp for mine, but id like for it to be fairly cheap as im a student.
Not to mention that the whole point of the HE-6 is that its a bargain compared to others. Its not a bargain if it needs a 2k+ amp!

$100 gets you a small Topping amp with built-in dac (and possibly a remote). Doesn't get much more convenient than that.

Project Ember. I'm enjoying the pairing quite a bit.

Thujone claims that the Vali 2 can handle it as well, though there's a lot less headroom for whatever that's worth.

It isn't the weight per say, though I'm sure that contributes. It's the "grip" of the headphone on the head. When I put the HD650 on, I forget about it till I take it off. With the HE-6, I have to subconsciously keep my head vertical, so the 6 doesn't slide around with tilts of the head (which is where the weight part comes in)...

I suspect many of you use your headphones at your PCMR desktop rigs? So you may be sitting vertical anyway. I sit on my bed to listen to music / play games / watch stuff on my projector so I'm rarely sitting up. Usually slouching or what not.

Yes I tried that (clamping it inward), but the points which apply pressure to your head first aren't the pads like on the HD650, it's these things:

I think I had a K-1000 and LCD-2 when I owned the HE-6 last. No wonder my memories of its sound and comfort are so fond, lol.

The Lohb suspension strap really helped me with my HE-500, and I would buy it again if I ever land a 6 (thinking about it...). I think it was about 35 shipped from him to the US.

I have that same one Poochzag, it does help. Although since I changed pads I am back to using regular HE-6 headband and it suits me fine.

This is easy to solve. Get the Audeze Vegan pads. This headphone when from not very comfortable to one of the most comfortable. Those stock pads are horrible

Has anyone tried modding the HE-6 to be wired in correct phase? According to Tyll's measurements, its reversed in stock form.

I'm curious because I just wired my SS-100 to correct phase after using it in reversed since I got it and the lack of ultimate coherency and articulation I was noticing relative to the rest of my gear just basically vanished.

It'd be easier to just rewire the pins on the XLR4 rather than try fiddling with those stupid smc connectors.

I guess it's a phase inverter, but it's almost the same thing. *cough*

@Thujone, did you remove the little sticky tab attaching the foam to the ear side too?

Also, what is meant by fiberglass, is that the grill? I only had a black satin like material covering the grill, and the loose cotton type white material inside the grill.

I'm wondering, why did HFman cover only a quarter of the driver with foam?

To reduce treble? No I have no clue! Mine had it aswell, but I removed it when doing the fuzzor mod.

    I have a theory...

If we base the human ear on this shape:

Then notice how different regions correspond to different wavelengths? The bottom looks like it's the longest point from the "end" of the curve, which is close to where your ear canal leads into your ear drum.

Since wavelengths has a 1/x relationship with frequency, it stands to reason that the region in red (which is also the same place that HiFiMAN is blocking) is responsible for the upper mid region.

Subjectively, I think blocking that region reduces perceived sound pressure around 2-6KHz by a good amount, but it could just be me. Depending on the material (foam in this case), there's not really much of a difference in measurement, though 8KHz does take a slight dip with the foam in place.

It actually kinda makes sense with most other over-ear headphones that way as well. Doing anything in that red region with the other headphones kinda adjust upper mid/lower treble as well as soundstage cues by a good amount from my experiments.

The region below it, if fitted with felt/micro-fiber cloth/foam, etc... will have a diffusing/focusing effect on lower mid and bass, correspondingly. And anything done in the other region typically adds quite a bit of upper treble to the sound.

But note that I really can't see the effect in measurements, so I could just be crazy.

@sphinxvc, there are measurements with and without the earside foam in my second post in the measurement thread. When referring to "fiberglass" I'm talking about the cotton behind the driver. I saw some folks calling it fiberglass somewhere.
