Do you have any recommendations for Hip Hop made with real instruments? Looking for stuff in the general direction of bands like Moop Mama (German hip hop + brass band) or Käptn Peng und die Tentakel von Delphi (very groovy, great sound, IMHO).

Doesn’t need to be German, of course, I just don’t know any English language groups off the top of my head that do similar stuff.

I don't know if this is in that direction, but I remember at least around 10 years ago, there was a Hip Hop group called Kids These Days, and they primarily used real instruments. Their album was Traphouse Rock.

Also Guru - Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1, and his other half: DJ Premier and the Badder band who were both part of Gangstarr. So groups like them?

Thanks, I’ll listen to them later today.

EDIT: Guru’s Jazzmatazz is not bad, but not 100% my cup of tea. But Kids These Days is totally great. Thanks @Slade01 !

Super late reply, but BADBADNOTGOOD has done some great collaborations with hip hop artists. Like the Sour Soul EP, in addition to singles and featured tracks on their albums. The Roots had a full/partial live band in the 90's if I remember correctly. This last one's a stretch but Shabaka and the Ancestors most recent album is definitely hip hop inspired with spoken word/rapping in a loose and early sense of the term. There are a number of contemporary hip hop inspired jazz bands if you don't require lyrics, big part of the current London jazz scene, but also North American acts like Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker and BBNG.

    Here's a Jeff Parker track:

And the above inspired by @YEEEEGZ post - I haven't thought to listen to Anticon stuff forever. Also, TIL YEEEEGZ and I like the same music across many genres, and may in fact be doppelgangers or highlanders, there can be only one.

Thanks for your suggestions @bobboxbody and @dsavitsk !

After some quick first listens, I liked Heavy Rhyme Experience, BBNG, and especially Makaya McCraven. Great new music to explore! :)
