I guess their "new" models are not for people looking for "absolute value" or "absolute SQ". They are more for people with nostalgia, big fans of house sound or just someone who wants luxury iem.

Head-fi summary:

The first impressions are coming in for what they are worth.

Early consensus is that bass is improved, sound is clearer overall and treble is smoother.
Tip choice and accessories are a let down. Cable is 6" longer, with more length before the V spilt.

Oh, I do like what I am reading. I am all in on Complys these days (which I use with the extinct Flare R2PRO). It seems that the IE800S have been designed to produce clean bass with them. Add less microphonics, a longer cable and a similar sound that people seem to like as much or even slightly better than the original, what is not to like?

 

Sennheiser needs to gets these out and available beyond the E.U. plus U.K.

 

^ Yes. And I see that the oval tips from the IE800 are forward compatible so more good tip options.

 

The problem with comply is they get's a little costly - I end up going through a pair a month. It's like driving a Hummer.

 

I credit you with being more hygienic than me.

But again, as an alternative, the IE800 medium/large oval tips are confirmed to be compatible with the IE800S. They were excellent with the IE800 (and it is is quite annoying that they are not included with the IE800S) but you can get them online with not too outrageous shipping here.

 

I wish I could take credit for stellar hygiene, but it's just that mine loosen, tear and fray after about a month, no longer sealing. Maybe I've got rough ear canals.

 

Looks like the ie800S is available in the U.S. now.

Twister's FR graph from the HF thread. I'm new to understanding FR graphs, but isn't this pretty V shaped still?

 

All signs point to the ie800S being a slightly smoothed ie800.

Always remember, twister6 writes reviews with word salad like "resolving tonality", but I expect the ie800S to have a V-shape, as he measured. My experience, at least personally, is that the ie800 weren't fatiguing. Maybe the Helmholtz resonator works well for my ear canals or something.

We'll see when my set arrives, but I expect the S to have roughly the same pros and cons of the original, just a bit better. I do expect the cable length to be better, allowing for an over-the-ear fit for just about everyone.
