I don't think so. My most recent S5 came from the Massdrop just before the current one and, after the mods, sounds great. I ordered one more from the most recent 'drop' as a backup

That's a relief! Just ordered one, I hope it takes to the mods and doesn't end up a dud :p

I finally ordered my first pair of customs. I gave up trying with universals due to fit issues and seal no matter what tips I used. I was looking at jh audio and Noble. Finally ordered the jh13 pro v2. Got impressions made and mailed off. Hopefully I'll see them ship this week.

I really think if you like bassier headphones (like if you've been eyeballing the se846) then the series 5 is gonna be all you will ever need.

I'm aiming for a bit more of a dry sound, so I bounced over to the MEE M6 Pro, but those series 5 remain the most surprising IEMs I've ever heard.

End Game IEM for a stupidly small amount of money

    The JH13v2 costs US $1175
    The SE846 costs about $1000

These are not stupidly small amounts of money. These might be stupidly small amounts of money if they related to a used car, a short break in a foreign continent (flights included) and so on. A stupidly small amount of money for an "end game" IEM is not $1000. It's maybe $200 and below. $1000 is genuine high end pricing.

Suggestion: if you think $1000 is small change for a good IEM then you came to the wrong thread and you should go post in another thread where people can swoon and gasp at all the money your daddy gives you.

You might wanna read the thread again there, bub. He's saying the TFZ headphones that he bought for $50 are a stupidly small amount of money.

    Lol,
A single post involving JH13 and SE846 in this whole thread. This is about the TFZ 5, which is $60

As per my previous post, the first IEM I plugged into my LAu is my modded S5. I actually was expecting nothing exciting. Disappointment honestly. What I got was holy s*** could it get any better.

Flame me as much as you want, but my $65 set of (modded) earphones plugged into a $7k stack blows away everything I have heard recently. That includes a pair of 650's plugged into the LAu balanced. The S5's blow the Senn's away in every category. I am not joking and not trolling. Just putting out there what my ears are hearing.

I really hope this ends up as good as you guys are saying, because I don't want to spend a grand on a good pair of IEMs.

I think I'll give a chance for the S5 now. For curiosity's sake what specific mods have you done? I was reading this thread today but there are a lot of them.

Also, does the new version with a new cable requires some mod as well to shine?

I've been using modded pair with zx2 on the go for a few months, i'd say that it hit the rightspot between usablity , sound quality and price

That's what I'm looking for. I'm listening to the Andromedas now and they're amazeballs but given their price I wouldn't be inclined to go everywhere with them, which limits their usability, and that money could be better spend on my planned speaker rig.

I'm with you on that ,i bought used K10u not so long ago and it ended up almost exclusively being used at home
. Its way too expensive to lugging it around especially i didt treat my portable gears that well.

While S5 wont go and slaying flagship iem left and right, i think it's very nice for on the go daily routine.

I've had IEMs ranging from $5 to $1000 (shure se846). Right now I have the MEE M6 Pro and TFZ Series 5 and I literally am not even looking at others. I don't care about the Series 7 or the P1 Pinnacle. The quality you can get for under $100 just doesn't make sense, that's how good they are.

Am I saying the Series 5 and M6P are "as good" as $1000 IEMs? No. What I'm saying is they're so damn good that spending that much just doesn't make sense to me. $950 more for a minor amount of improvement is, to me, not a sound investment. The difference between mid-fi and summit-fi FULL SIZE cans is rather wide, but not nearly so much in the tiny form factor.

FWIW those IEMs are what I use alongside my HD700s as part of my portable setup. I don't mind spending extra if I feel the quality is worth it.

EDIT: To put it another way, when I had my se846 my general thought was "wow, this is what $1000 IEMs sound like! Incredible!" When I listened to the Series 5, my though was "How the hell are these only $60?!?"

I've gone through somewhere around 12 iems over the past five years. There are many situations at work and at home where an iem is the only real opportunity that I can listen to music, so my motivation to find a pair that made me happy was quite high. Finally I took the plunge and ordered a pair of jh13 pro v2 a few weeks ago. I got them on Wednesday morning. They are gloriously good. Oh how I wish that I would have just taken the plunge years ago and quite wasting $100 and $80 there on economy iems. I've easily spend as much on the cheapies as the jh13.
