I don't think it's manipulation. That would be giving him too much credit. He's not that smart.

However, I did notice one thing that could explain this: It's likely that Jude grabbed the impulse response at 48kHz, but processed / plotted the FFT bins at 44kHz instead. The reason why I think this? The patterns of the peaks and nulls of both Tyll and Jude's measurement are the same. The only difference is the frequencies of those peaks and nulls are lower. (Well, the one other difference is the amplitude of the peak, but that's a matter of slightly different compensations.) Subjective interpretations of the peak will differ from person to person. I've generally observed Tyll to be sensitive to 9-10kHz peaks, what he's termed "zingy".

The 48kHz recording and 44.1kHz processing wouldn't explain the 20% discrepancy in frequencies points. But it's entirely possible that the AP system has other sampling rate options. Other things that could affect the measurements include differences in atmospheric pressure and quality of seal.

There's no updated measurements for the Tyll reviewed ZMF headphones. There seems to be a direct correlation to sponsorship revenue & "rescue" measurements. I doubt Zach has the budget to fly someone to Singapore for a schillfest tour.

I'm inclined to think that Jude fucked up, given the plethora of other independent measurements that show similar patterns, but with the peak at 10kHz. As I've said, it's the man, not the machine. One of the dangers of inferior men using great complex machines is improper use. Once the men are equal, it then becomes the machine. But these are transducer measurements where a a db off here or there isn't of consequence, it's not Formula 1 where 0.03 seconds means second place.

I like how Jude is using that Utopia incident as a reason to utterly discredit Tyll. If Tyll is not matching the hype, he must have gotten a lemon!

I don't think Tyll and Marv's setups take into account the human body, down to just above the naughty bits.

The positioning of the headphone on the rig can make a significant difference---that's why I measure in 5 places. But I always position the headphones using a 30Hz square wave and can see (don't ask, the answer would be long, complex, and I'd have to show you a video of what happens---there's a lot of feel and experience that goes into it) what's going on. I always try to optimize the response at each position for both bass response and high frequency response. I do try to produce the most representative plots given what I see as the headphone's performance on the head. Sometimes it's favorable and sometimes not, but I do try to make it representative. I will often take the cans of the head and listen for what I'm seeing on the scope as a reality check.

    Here's my response to Jude's post: https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/head-fi-contradicts-innerfidelity-sony-mdr-z1r-measurements

I do use several positionning as well. For a few headphones it can make a significant difference so it's better IMO to show all takes to let people understand what's going on. Dunno if it's the case for this Sony though.

Such a 10khz peak should be easy to detect by ears by listening to a sweep tone right ?

It will be interesting to see if Jude takes you up on your offer, @Tyll Hertsens . "Let's trade headphones and re-measure." would clear things up. I don't know that Jude would want this cleared up, though.

I think the fact that Jude decided to post it on HF front page instead of contacting Tyll directly (to exchange headphones and conduct more measurements) tells the whole story. Just shaking my head right now…

To be fair Jude does seem to have a less noisy mic setup or one with lower distortion, or at least uses software that better eliminates noise from the picture. The THD results in the midrange are generally much much lower and probably much closer to the real limit of the phones. The difference in bass distortion is probably caused by slightly different levels and a different dummy head. I got lower bass distortion on my head than on my coupler, so could be that two different dummy heads stress the driver differently.
It's just incredibly annoying that his THD plots go down to 0.000001% when really the noise limits them much higher than that. Shows how little he really knows about measurements. The scale also isn't the same for all his measurements.

I doubt it. The 3kHz peak looks like it didn't move. I think it's probably the dummy head, compensation and positioning.

    For reference:

The Utopia, Elear and Ether Flow all have a massive 15db 9kHz dip on his coupler. The Z1R doesn't. There's really nothing else that needs to be said.

Thanks for posting there. I can't reach Head-Fi anymore. Possible Head-Fi banned my IP, so I have not way of reading his articles or checking out his measurements directly.

So here is my take based on @Tyll Hertsens article and the plots shared at Innerfidelity:

    1. Jude's plots seem to be far more octave averaged than @Tyll Hertsens and @Marvey . This will reduce peaks artificially.
    2. Jude's plots are compensated. And who knows what compensation he used. It is likely that his random compensation artificially reduces peaks on some trouble areas.
    3. Jude's plots do not have the same x-axis graphical scale. While the actual scales are similar (70 dB range on y-axis and 10Hz to 20kHz on the x-axis), it seems the x-axis graphical scale is stretched more (wider), giving the illusion that things are more smooth and flat on Jude's plots.
    4. Jude's conclusion is completely incorrect IMO for the following reasons:
    • Both plots show a peak around 2 to 3 kHz. The difference here is indeed likely due to positioning. I have seen this happen personally.
    • The second peak around 10 kHz in @Tyll Hertsens plots are present in Jude's plots, but are likely severely attenuated probably by Jude's choice of compensation curve, octave averaging, and acquisition rig.
    • Head-Fi measurements and impressions tend to be un-representative and heavily tilted to positiveness. This is by design of the website and in agreement with Jude's strong interests in keeping Head-Fi on-line through sponsorship.
I also find @Tyll Hertsens linked article very informative and Jude's Head-Fi claims very misinformative (I can't read his article - only excerpts shared at IF). Perhaps such views on my part may partially explain why I cannot see Head-Fi at all.

Shutting things down in such a way (I don't think I'm the only one unable to reach Head-Fi), and these latest developments hopefully paints a picture of what Head-Fi unfortunately is:

A popular site pretending to dedicate itself to personal audio, while in reality being a commercial, hustling, and misinformation machine at it's core.

Because he's realized that measurements are a powerful tool in undermining (or reinforcing) the status quo and wants to control the narrative by building the bestest possible rig, complete with 1200lb isolation booth effective down to 4Hz. This will give him the authority and "credibility" to hand-wave away independent measurements that show expensive FOTM flagships in an unflattering light.

    That's why the e-peen.

    What have we learned?

    1) Jude still doesn't know how to "read" and interpret Tyll's measurements. Or his own, for that matter...

    2) Jude is obviously trying to protect his sponsors for his own well being, not the community's, and trying to force hand wave his flock into not looking behind the curtain with a bunch of hollow, shiny nothingness distractions.

    3) I also took measurements, and they're the best, and my rig is the best, and I'm the best, and you should all pay attention to me, because my rig backs up my claims, and also this headphone is pretty meh sounding and way over priced, and and and...

BTW, I have seen Tyll measure headphones in person. He explained the process to me. Believe it or not, and despite what you think of his rig's results + compensation curve, which definitely have great use if you know how to wield them, he's actually pretty damn good at it! Who would have thought a guy like him would be good at his job?

To help understand an individuals measurement rig, it would be helpful to have a measurement taken from a reference headphone, like the HD650 or something of that sort.

I've posted a few of my measurements of various cans here with a HD650 measurement taken immediately after, to show how my rig behaves. Not my HD650 measurement from 3 months ago, one taken within minutes of the other headphone I was measuring.

Here is the page being discussed in PNG format. I have to click it then click it again to enlarge to full size. I'm using Chrome.

Here is a link to "Next Generation Headphone Testing" that Jude references.

Oh boi, well I commented on the HF thread, questioning why Jude choose to discredit literally EVERYONE who measured a peak in the MDR Z1R by calling Tyll's measurements "inconsistent" [because all of them have that peak in common] and he didn't like that got my FIRST Multi Quote'd LINE BY LINE defense response. He really tore into me

I also echo'd some of the thoughts I found here as well, I'm excited to see that Tyll and Jude will collaborate, but I agree that Jude should have reached out to Tyll FIRST to collaborate and then make a nice big Head Fi post with the results of their collaboration... I'm sure that post will earn me even more brownie points

Judegate? This has got to be like Judegate Part XII or something..

So Jude has measurements that are contradictory to almost every single set of measurements for this phone that can be found and he uses this to call out Tyll in particular. How peculiar. What will Jude do when he is proven wrong?

    1. Pretend that he's not wrong and never admit it.

    2. Delete the entire thread.

    3. Admit he was wrong and apologize to Tyll.

If there was a way to walk it back I'm sure he would but I think he has passed the point of no return on that.
