    Looks like this isn't happening. I should have pulled it out of the box earlier. The item was listed as "excellent" on Reverb, but it sure didn't look or smell excellent. I may buy this DAC new for myself anyway. Could care less about scratches on pro gear, but I have a different definition of excellent.

    Oh no... :confused:

    The top plate of mine wasn't so clean either, and the box had a strong smell, too. That weird "poorly ventilated storage" smell...
    Those rack mounted units get beat up and scratched up a lot :rolleyes:

    The smell could be dying components guys. Fried and dying gear has a certain pungency to it. It’s probably the power supply, caps, or discrete op amps.
