Lots of talk about HD650, but what about us who enjoy bass?

Id buy them if they had detacheable cable and bigger ear opening. I have pretty big ears, but Denon AH-Ds fit me, but this look very small in terms of ear pads

Look really nice, closed phones with wooden finish are as classy as it gets.

However, not planars, and does not seem that reliable build-wise: cords are not replaceable, right?

Still great but probably Mad Dogs are better price/performance.

Looks solid to me, headband is metal and so are all connectors. The cable is an annoyance, so I'll have to attempt retermination or find someone good enough to do it for me, but it definitely shouldn't be a deal breaker. We'll see when it gets here I guess.

What tube amps/tube rolling do you have experience with in combination with the HD650? Not that my experience is anywhere near that of some guys here, but what I have learned is that it's not right to generalize the tube sound too much. I've heard some tube amps + tube combos that are incredibly clear, fast, tonally accurate, dynamic, etc.

I would say from personal experience that @Hands is correct here. With the Lyr/Lyr 2 you definitely hear the difference between the tubes. However I think what you are getting at @Psalmanazar and correct me if I am wrong here is that when you go high end tube amps you don't need to tube roll. The one low cost amp that I haven't heard much about the benefits of tube rolling is the Bottlehead Crack (which I hope to pick up at some point).

@Hands @velvetx You know how they used to smear the vaseline on camera lenses to hide stuff? That's the Speedball Crack. It sounded ridiculous with kick drums and high gain guitars. Of course I was listening to Dismember whose guitar tone was so ridiculously fat, high gain, and distorted it frequency masked everything else in the room. The Crack made the guitar notes just the string and then vaseline instead of a guitar being played through a ridiculous amps. Kick drums are absolutely slamming though but bled into the lower mids, silver driver HD 650s sounded almost like how black driver ones do on a solid state. Vali was microphonic gooey wrongness. There's something entirely wrong about that amp. If I listened to EDM instead of metal and rock or didn't care that much about guitar tone, the Crack would be sick.

I'm sure there are more neutral tube headphone amps out there like the Eddy Current stuff but I haven't heard them. I'm not sure what they would do to high gain guitars either.

The Crack + SB does tend towards a more typical tube sound, though there's still a lot of ways to tweak the sound with tubes and other mods like different caps, different volume pot or stepped attenuator, choke, etc.

If you get a chance to try something from Eddie Current, and especially if you were able to play around with different tubes, I'd be curious to know what you think then.

I did notice that the Vali felt a little too soft in the treble. However I thought that it showcased the potential that tubes have at an amazing price, and was therefore a gateway tube amp for me. It convinced me to try Valhalla 2, which does a better job all the way around.

Edit: Also, for whatever reason, my Vali exhibits almost no microphonics.

Massdrop cans look like a good deal but so does a 400i for $255. Also I really wish fostex would offer the matte black cups on other models. I don't want polished wood headphones. This is 2015.

Some of the nicest-looking phones use wood, and it changes the tone. But mahogany cups look odd with a black headband and gimbals.

As i understand good bass extension means that the HP/speaker reproduces audible bass to the lowest octaves, neutrally.

Somebody probably mentioned them along the line, but, Sennheiser HD250 Linear II. I can't believe how ridiculous good sub bass they have, it's like having a subwoofer on your head. Never heard 30-20hz so clearly and loud before, plus even on my phone I can difference kick tail and actual sub bass in the low end. Somebody mentioned ATH M50x, but Linear II blow them away easily in sub bass area IMO.

HD650 lulled me to sleep. I liked it but felt like I was being pulled into lala land.

So ahhh.... did Purrin mention what HP he as talking about? If so I missed it.

EDIT: I stand corrected, the Foster TH-X00? Dang I missed out on the mass drop and need to wait for it to be active again. :Violin:

A well amped HD 650 has enough bass. LCD2 may have more I guess. You can try DT 990 for a fun budget sound.

It has enough mid bass, but it doesnt extend far as we all know.
Listen to Jamie XX - Gosh, the bass should be mad! With HD650 is rather depressing sounding track. Doesnt extend and give as much omph down low.
Audeze crushes HD650 regarding bass. So does most planars.

    My ears disagree.
    ''Crushes'' is a strong word.
Quantity down low, yes, tranisent response of better Hifimans is better in sub bass, also agree.
In tone, definition, room cues, dynamic contrast HD650 bests any planar i know even in sub bass.
