Lots of talk about HD650, but what about us who enjoy bass?

What amp you use with HD650?
I use a Woo WA6-SE, but I think maybe a SS would be better to make them more livly? :D

I'm one of those guys that hears and measures the HD650 as having plenty of extension down to 20Hz. That is, 20Hz is at least at the same level as the midrange and treble. With the right amp, I also hear it as often having a more visceral slam and impact over most planars, though some planars with larger drivers do hit harder. All of the Audeze headphones I've heard up to this point have sounded softer and sometimes even leaner than the HD650. Some of this is also music dependent, and it could be most of my music has more content in the mid-bass, thus making the HD650 sound more powerful. I do think a lot of it comes down to amp pairing, though. I find more amps than not make the HD650 sound a bit weaker than they are capable of. Same can apply for planars.

I think most will agree it's just the wrong headphone for EDM and similar genre. As good as it might be, doesn't have the bass presentation you're looking for - when it comes to that music.

I find them pretty good with alot of EDM tracks actually.
In EDM its alot of kick drums etc.
But more deep electronic is not the best

Still, for tracks like Hotel California Hell freezes over version, it doesnt have that thunderous bass either, unless you play like insanly loud

Wait, really? Do I have a unicorn HD650? Hotel California HFO sounds pretty thunderous on my HD650.

I guess I need to educate myself about the various Electronica music, I tend to lump it all together since I don't listen much to it apart from some movie soundtracks or checking out whatever is "hot" on the popular iTunes charts.

Can't speak for the WA6-SE or whatever amps you're using for the planars. Nor can I speak for using the iPhone to try to measure how loud you listen. :p

Now that we know purrin's unicorn headphone, I can definitively say the JVC HP-DX1000 has harder hitting sub-bass and smoother treble than the TH-X00.

That said, I'm a basshead and I'm sensitive to treble. The TH-X00 is basshead capable, slightly too peaky in a few treble spots, and the earpads aren't big enough for my large ears.

The DX1k has considerably less treble, slightly more bass, and weird but fairly large pads.

The frequency response of the HP-DX1000 is like the HD650 tilted downhill (much more bass, slightly less treble) with a honky peak in the lower mids.

Can't wait for some SoCal SuperBAFs to hear them. They'll polarize people for sure.

Dude, what amp(s) are you hearing this on? My rig is pretty humble, but I have to EQ 20-90 Hz up at least a few dB (using Sonarworks compensation curves) in order for the subbass to not sound rolled off. For music that is mostly mid-centric, it's not very noticeable. But whenever deep bass is involved, it's very obvious.

What headphones are you comparing it to, and what do you run it from?

I use mine primarily with a Super 7 and highly modded Crack + Speedball too (the latter of course, higher output impedance, so makes it sound thicker).

I don't think the HD650 would be a good choice for the kind of electronica that goes beep and boop, with low bass sustains. Just not clean enough down there in the nether regions. Hmm, that didn't sound too good.

This is where I am not in agreement with many that HD650 is less amp picky than for example HD800.
From weak amp HD650 is just dull and boring me to sleep. Some ss amps even induce grating tonality in lower treble with HD650 to my ears.
If WA6-SE is anything like WA22 then from my POV its not ideal for HD650. Too soft in dynamics and transients plus it lacks in resolution to bring out what makes HD650 special, on top of it being too warm and slightly rolled off in treble for a headphone that is already mildly warm and dark.
I currently use a EC 2A3 that is a loaner from friend. Otherwise a Cavalli Ehha (modded) that gets it 90% there. Note that I'm speaking on behalf of old driver HD650 vs LCD-3F and LCD-2F and HE-6. For comparison sake all driven by these two amps and Yggdrasil.

Maybe we could get a loaner for that, because everyone is a closet basshead and you need to coax them out.

What is the exact definition of bass everyone here defines? Like the Audeze LCD-2 & Fostex TH-900 that I A/B'd have been both described as bass king headphones, but their sounds are completely opposite from each other.

The Fostex TH-900 has insane sub-bass thump, as in the headphones sending out actual physical waves that you can feel against your ear & head when a bass instrument is played.
Though the actual bass music you hear isn't really that pronounced or special. In fact it's closer to the Sennheiser HD800 in that aspect.

The Audeze LCD-2 (& probably Sennheiser HD650) have strong bass music, as in the music from bass guitar, drums & other deep instrumentals is emphasized. It will play them with strong authority & slam. Hard hitting deep sounds, sound hard hitting & deep. Though the actual physical thump emanating from them is non-existent!.

Does it really come down to paying $6,000 for a pair of headphones to actually do both?

It seems like it, yes. Well maybe the TH-X00 it enough!
I know Denon AH-D2000 hits pretty hard, make my ears vibrate almost, but they are pretty muddy sounding

Ive always been told that clarity + bass = big money
