So this just happened...on loan for evaluation.

So far, some win some loss. Imaging is excellent, sound has a sweetness to it. My biggest problem right now is getting the midrange area to blossom up towards a fuller sound. I like the speed and articulation of these new Cell Concept Accuton Drivers. The bring in nice clarity, but I REQUIRE a full sounding midrange for my listening tastes.

I am going to work on them with tube rolling, placement, cables, anything and everything I can do to fill in the midrange sound!

The Marten Bird 2's I had here were just "fuller" sounding and just perfect in that regard. These new first order crossover designs provide further immediacy to the sound, but I almost feel that Marten hit that sweet spot in the second generation crossover design of the Bird 2, Coltrane 2, Coltrane Tenor etc.

More listening required from my side to get a grip on things. But just wanted to share with you guys!

For reference, here are the Bird 2's in their absolute drop dead GLORIOUS burled cherry wood finish!

    Cheers!

Ditto! We should have a small listening get together.

Lets do that...a small get together. I hope you STILL have my tubes with you?! :)
Will be very helpful actually as I'm really trying to nail down the sound with these speakers.

What Coltranes? I had Bird 2 that are in the Heritage line. Never had Coltranes in my setup.

Are you guys going to do a mini meet within the next week? I arrive in OC tomorrow night, and will be there until Sunday morning, then fly to work for another 22 days :(

If not, OC is my new home so there's plenty of time to catch up later and meet you all ;)

Rotijon he decided the Coltranes weren't suited to his room size(small). I'm sad the mingus quartet aren't a home run. Maybe they need to be burned in more for the midrange to blossom? :p (I dont believe in burn in). Maybe you need to remove the mesh protector covering the mid driver, I notice your Bird 2 mid range drivers have nothing covering them

They do, it's just very hard to see in the picture. Accuton drivers always come with these mesh protectors as they are said to be very fragile and break easily. I've heard others say they're about as sturdy as an eggshell, so I could actually see how I could do without the protectors. The 5" Cell midrange, which is very open from the back, also has a similar mesh attached to the back, inside the magnet.
I guess they don't want people accidentally breaking them but people who have touched them say that they don't break immediately and it does require some force to break. I myself have not touched one.

Edit: I think the 5" diaphragms are 100microns think, the larger ones 150 and the tweeters 50.

Ok, mini meet is in order. We should do 3 guys tops as there isn't so much room for everyone sit and listen and really one sweet spot ;)

So shall we do @Merrick , @JK47 (welcome to OC bud!) and @insidious meme ? A weekday evening would be best I think.

I was thinking of the Coltrane 3's. But they are simply too big for my room and was discouraged by the dealer himself!

Again, welcome to OC and a new chapter in your life. If we do this meet soon, you are absolutely welcome to join.

That is excellent! We will tube roll when we meet up, so everyone can see how dramatically it can affect the sound and help move it in the direction of one's listening sensibilities.

I work weekday evenings unfortunately, so either I can swing by on a weekday and miss the meet (boo!), or if there's a day we can all meet during the day I could join in.

I could do a day time meet...I'm flexible. JK, I am assuming has some days off from work (he has a special kind of work schedule). @insidious meme , can u do any daytime? Actually, let me take this to PM. We can figure it out there.

Oh no...he is not a dealer. Right now, they are going to be setup back in my room. The Mingus is a technical masterpiece, but not what I seek sonically...they will go to their possible new owner soon, somewhere in the East Coast.

Such a joy and pain to be able to compare at home. Outside of sheer luck I can't figure out how else one can get to his sound nirvana. I love the tweak part too, get to the ballpark of the sound you want, and then in inches, hone in the sound. A lot people hate that part of it too (aka cables as tone controls, vibration isolation), forgetting that while they scoff, they miss the whole point of the chase.

I always hold admiration for people who can find the time, effort, research and equipment needed to tune a room or damp it. There is just so much variables and so much time needed. Its actually quite hard to hire someone to tune your room due to the sheer amount of time needed. But it makes the most difference.
