I will enumerate, based on @lehmanhill awesome post, why going I2S with the Metrum Acousitcs Pavane/Adagio is probably NOT a good idea w/o their proprietary Ambre solution (or similar):
    1. No LVDS:
    2. Needs inch long cable (w Pi2AES):
    3. Requires buffering & reclocking:
It should be apparent from the above that the Metrum I2S interface needs life support in the form of their proprietary Metrum Ambre to work (they seem to have a proprietary RJ45 arrangement to support the interconnect - different pins for different I2S signals).

And then I further read here that the USB implementation is glitchy and fucked up *sigh*.

I don't doubt @lithiumnk impressions. But bare in mind that the setup has Metrum's Ambre "life support" system (or other such as the Pi2AES or similar). The Ambre seems to be a LAN to proprietary I2S deal. And do note that LAN payload has a shit ton of jitter and requires all kinds of regeneration (it's a packet based protocol).

Why did the Pavane does not just incorporate LAN connectivity, or support an RJ45 module directly instead of their proprietary I2S module beats me.

That said, and based on folks here, it seems it works. So life is good.

Though I'm always in favor of separate "boxes" for each function (streamer/SPDIF, DAC, amp, etc.), so I can get really good pieces and mix and match however I want, I do hope to see more manufacturers incorporate streaming functionality into the DACs.

You could then ensure a super short I2S path inside the DAC. And with stuff like the DigiOne Sig or Pi2AES, you wouldn't have to worry so much about if the source is good, cables, impedance matching, etc.

Speaking of, I'm pretty sure the Ambre is just a Raspberry Pi with a custom HAT and PSU all wrapped in one box. Not to downplay that necessarily, because some of the RPi HATs sound very good, but it does beg the question what secret sauce, if any, you're really paying for.

That was my understanding too. A good ARM processor is faster and more powerful than any FPGA, so that may not be a bad thing.

I also agree that the Ambre models are pretty pricey when you can successfully go to an RPi + hat for $200 to $300.

One additional point. I haven't experimented with how long the i2s cable can be. I just made one up at 4" because it was a short, direct length from the RPi to the Onyx. Michael Kelly (Pi2design MOT) at one point suggested that you might be OK at a couple of feet cable length due to the buffering.

LOL! actually for certain things an FPGA will destroy an ARM processor in terms of speed, but it will consume shit tons more power. It's not just clock speed. It's the fact that FPGAs are HW emulators (gate arrays) and execute concurrently.

A couple of feet of cable might be ok as well, but if you are concerned about signal integrity using SPDIF, those couple of feet are not doing I2S any favors.

Also note that these I2S connectivity solutions are somewhat ad-hoc. I don't think there are I2S RJ45 standard connectors.

Isn't that the most important thing about efficient DSP, to parallelize it? I've heard players have recently tapper into the parallel computing power of GPUs to do software upsampling

I agree. I was curious to hear how i2s would compare to balanced AES and SPDIF. It was an interesting experiment and the i2s worked, so I'm using it. But the difference between the 3 types is quite small. If you have a good SPDIF source, I don't see a huge incentive to figure out i2s.

Regarding the ad-hoc connections, just think about it. From what I know, there are 3 dac brands that you can buy with i2s input. Each has a different data format. I'm guessing that this will be a passing fad like SACD.

DSPs have a high degree of parallelism. And it's nowhere near that of an FPGA. Think of FPGAs as almost ASICs. You are "programming" gates. There is no PC counter or crap like that. All things "execute" at the same time.

Players need to be power efficient. Specially portables. They are the perfect market for DSPs, not FPGAs.

    Yup.

Don’t forget to wrap each I2S wire in the thickest shielding you can (2” diameter will suffice), then put it in a silicone mold to keep it in a proper geometric shape and reduce cosmic vibrations.

You could just move your transport towards your DAC at the speed of light so the cable length becomes 0. This way the I2S signal doesn't have to travel a long distance (or does it ?)

This should put a 9" pacifier in the mouths of your Metrum I2S concerns.

Humbled like a worm, with my panties down, and with no bra, I present what only my google powers can:

by the gawds- the impedance matching possible with that cable must be perfect and sublime under all conditions!

Bingo. Metrum paid particular attention to power supplies (both Pi and HAT), and used a very good clock (I believe it's a custom TentLabs? Not 100% sure on that). The Baby Ambre is built around the mini-Pi, with less quality power and clock. As to sauce, I believe Ambre's stellar performance is due to a quality clock, with attention to quality power to both Pi AND HAT.

I like my DAC, balanced into Stellaris, SE into anything else, mostly the Crack and recently the modified WA5.

While upgrading the PX4 amp I wanted to test the balanced input transformers are wired properly so took the SE output to the Crack.

    To put it bluntly
    - SE out of Pavane is veiled and shit.
    - Jensen PC2XR is worse than internal lundahl transformers, different sound, sharper and more artefacts.
    - I'd though the Crack was at it's limits yet SE was holding it back, much more insight/focus into music.
    - Sowter 3575 transformers are very good, so good I'll leave the RCA ports as outputs/loops on the PX4 amp and hook the Crack directly to it.
    - testing with gimped outputs can make one sell gear that's not heard at full potential.
    - I'll have to redo the trial by combat for tubes in the WA5, A/B ing with SE vs Sowter on different inputs shows a clear unquestionable difference.
    - high end gear doesn't deserve value transformers or summing circuits.
    - you never know where the bottleneck might be
    - the best cable in the world wouldn't compensate yet 20£ van damme studio sound glorious
    - had the transformers for 2 years, first time I put them to good use, search your closet and use forgotten gear.

I've actually been meaning to ask if anyone has recommendations for suitable, drop-in replacements for the LL1540, which is what the Pavane uses.

No doubt they're a bit soft and veiled; A bit too midrange focused, bass somewhat indistinct. I've been thinking about swapping them out.

Midrange focused is a bit kind, greyness and subdued dynamics is my experience. Looking at the 1540 datasheet it's highly unlikely we'll find a drop in replacement that's not from LL. They do accept custom orders, nickel core and/or silver winding should kick it up a notch.
A custom job with a 3D printed support would work yet that implies soldering and worst case drilling the board or the chassis. I'm crazy but not that crazy yet.

Are there any DAC's that are a mash up of the SFD-1 and the Pavane? I like quite a bit about both, but lean a little more towards the Pavane's technical qualities.

Sorry, totally shouldn't have said "drop-in replacement." I didn't actually mean one I could solder directly in place on the PCB, but rather one that would be of similar-enough specifications to work in its place.

My Pavane is basically a DIY version put together using OEM parts and a custom case. Easy enough for me to fit other transformers in the case and run wiring as needed to the PCB.

My bad, I was not at all clear when I said that. :)

As for subjective impressions, I've found bumping up the midrange, usually in the 500Hz-1KHz range, can give a sense of greyness. And lack of speed, punch, and incisiveness in the bass and treble can give the sense of subdued dynamics at times. So, we are probably just using different terms to describe the same thing. I've heard it too and know what you mean on the Pavane.

What’s the output of the Pavane? Could try CLMI600 or CMOL 2X600 from Cinemag. Can always ask David Geren there. He’s super helpful.

Don't know if my experiences with SUTs for analog stuff applies, but...

I prefer the Cinemag Blue transformers (in a Bob's Devices Sky 20, I think they're a custom job) to the premium Lundhals used by K&K Audio in their upper range SUTs. And my least preferred step-up option are the cheaper Lundhals built in to my ModWright PH 9.0 phono stage (which is otherwise a good phono stage).

Don't know if the same experiences would roughly parallel the use case above, but Cinemag Blues have greater clarity and frequency extension, at least to these ears.
