I am recommending the following Schiit multibit DAC nicknames:

    Yub
    Gub
    Bub
    Mub

Sums up my own thoughts exactly. And, as I touched on earlier, my BF4490 is already logged in Schiit's upgrade queue. So I'm kind of hoping that, if there is indeed some tweak/upgrade to the Bifrost Multibit forthcoming, that they'll delay emailing my RA number in the interest of outfitting my Bifrost with their latest multibit board.

Now, that's probably a laughably unrealistic understanding of how they organize their business on my part. The point is, I'm happy to wait out a modest delay in the interest of an improved Bifrost Multibit in the near future. ;) It's not like I don't enjoy the hell out of the BF4490 as it is.

The problem is... it's inelegant and awkward, both in looks and logistically (can't stack the amp on the Modi, and Modi in tube amps is... well, awkward at best). And I know that many audio people profess volubly and at length that they don't care about anything but sound, and I've seen enough pictures to know that a bunch of them mean it. But man, eugh.

Personally... I know that Schiit has been volubly against combining a DAC and amp in a single box, but when your DAC is this good and this small, the idea of an Asgard-style amp with an expansion card DAC in the box starts to seem maybe more feasible. (Yeah, yeah, I know that there would be engineering challenges and perfectly sound reasons not to do it -- but for a $250 amp, a $250 DAC expansion card that keeps things neat and tidy would be pretty appealing.)

Um, not to be too flip, but I'm not seeing that. The word you were looking for was "unnecessary" perhaps? I've certainly confused that with "appealing" a few times myself. No shame in it.

The esteemed Dr. Brule's input and analysis is always most welcome!

To clarify. Multibit here refers to R2R?

Yes. All of the Schiit multibit options refer to r2r.

Gungnir Multibit > Gumbi > Gungnir Multibit
Bifrost Multibit > Bimbi > Bifrost Multibit
Modi Multibit > Mombi > Momby

    Hm.

Yes, I think that points out the problem exactly. Momby is the correct continuation of the sequence, but it just doesn't have that ring to it. Hence the naming debate ensues...

Still stuck on Moby, here. Phonetic similarity to Modi be damned! :headbang: All the more fitting.

Not all multibit is R2R, AFAIK.

Indeed, even the chips Schiit are using aren't r2r for all of the bits, they use a resistor string for some of them I believe.

R2R is just a type of multibit architecture. I believe there are other types of architectures that fall under the multbit term. Unfortunately, and despite my attempts at using Google just now, I can't remember what I read about varying architectures before.

I think D/S DACs started out as 1 bit DACs (or at least that's how they are usually conceptualized), but most D/S DACs now incorporate a hybrid architecture using a small number of bits, like a 5 bit multibit modulator. I think.
