Moved TT, now lots of crackling, popping and distortion

My set up is as follows:

Pro-ject 1Xpression Carbon (about 15-18 years old, it’s had very light use for its age)
Schiit Mani phono pre amp
Schiit Vali 2 headphone amp

This was all working fine until recently, when I decided to move the setup to a different room. Unfortunately, now the sound is completely messed up, with lots of pops and cracking and distortion that wasn’t there before. I even sometimes loose the right channel all together. Sometimes the popping noises can be heard as my hand gets close to the tone arm, so I suppose it could be static related. I’m not sure what has happened - the head of the tone arm could have taken a knock, but I’m fairly certain that it didn’t. I have tried removing the connectors on the back of the stylus and reattaching them, but the problem is still there.

Any ideas what I can try to get this sorted?

Presuming you didn't drop equipment the problem is usually cables. They can get strain damage at the connectors when pulling to remove them or when you move something without disconnecting first.

Temporarily swap out cables in the chain one at a time with a new cable, see if that elminates it.

 

I think I’ve solved the problem! The needle on the stylus has become bent backwards, presumably as a result of the move. Hopefully it hasn’t damaged the records I tried playing. Anyway, new stylus is on the way.
