Free State of Jones was not what I expected, but what it turned out to be was very good.

The surprise winner for me was Warcraft, The beginning. I was expecting mediocrity at best, but I enjoyed it!! Big hit of the summer for me so far.

The last movie I saw in theaters was "The Nice Guys" with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. f'ing hilarious and quite stylishly done. It's going in my iTunes library, I think.

Dunno about Zootopia yet, but I felt Finding Dori was better than Finding Nemo. Liked Finding Dori.

Great video on why Zach Snyder can't make good movies.

Abrams has a similar problem with a different twist.

All I could think about while watching that was how perfectly Watchmen fit that formula. From vague memories, Dawn of the Dead was much further from that. However this George A. Romero quote sounds about right:

"It was better than I expected. ... The first 15, 20 minutes were terrific, but it sort of lost its reason for being. It was more of a video game. I'm not terrified of things running at me; it's like Space Invaders. There was nothing going on underneath."

Edit: Dawn of the dead is worse than I remember. The shuttle building part needs a new song:

Picked up the DVD-set for the Mad Max films. Better late than never. Just watched "Fury Road."

This film is beyond awesome when you understand the hyper-violent films from the 1980-ties. Think of Dolph Lundgren in the original Punisher film or Stallone in Cobra. Between scenes of chaos and violence there are quiet moments of humanity that remind you how frail even the protagonist is.

It is not often that a film like this one makes you think and appreciate the contrasts.

Rewatching The Empire Strikes Back...still holds up, best of the series IMO. Worth it for Yoda alone.

Saw The Descendants the other night. Good, economical script. Clooney minus his 'smarmy gets comeuppance' shtick. Great soundtrack!

Lastly, Dallas Buyers Club - McConaughey is unstoppable right now. Great in True Detective as well.

Saw Star Trek Beyond last weekend. Would recommend, best ST we've had in this new continuum. Some shortcuts and quirks but we've got to the point where we're comfortable with the characters and know what to expect. Biggest issue was the villain. Another boring revenge plot with no real motivation. We seriously learn more about the villain in the last 20 minutes than in the rest of the film.

Does the antagonist present a real threat to the crew or Federation or just a Marvel Studios villain?

He has a doomsday weapon that shoots out black cum. He's only a threat because Kirk doesn't shoot him with his phaser when he has a very obvious opening.

You could say he does, but he's just so average in his brooding and we really don't know anything about him up until the final boss fight. These action films are such a blur of jumping from plot point to plot point that I feel like I'm in some zombie trance and that 2 hours goes by without anything truly exciting happening. The whole thing is just a series of transient scenarios where we are tricked into suspending our disbelief because cool flashy shit is happening.

Still better than Star Wars TFA

So like Star Trek if it was a mediocre Indiana Jones knockoff made with fake CGI Latiku cameras. I miss action movies that actually have a plot or a good villain and are well shot. I just watched Pale Rider and Kagemusha last weekend so I'm spoiled.

Ok - not a movie but I'm really digging Daredevil right now. It also has the BEST screen adaptation of Kingpin and Punisher I've seen just about anywhere.

    Season 1 - Kingpin:

Went and saw "Hell or High Water" with the folks last night. It's the best movie of 2016 by, like, a f**kin' light year. :headbang:Go see it, thank me later.

@TwoEars: "Daredevil" on Netflix is fantastic. Glad to see Jon Bernthal's career lifting off. And Vincent D'Onofrio's take on the Kingpin is on par with Heath Ledger's Joker, for my money.

I like to search Prime for indie movies. I recently watched Nightmare Code. It's an interesting concept, especially as we ease closer to the next stage of AI. It's uses an innovative filming style to mimic security monitoring. While I enjoyed it as an indie film, character development was a little weak and there were just too many flaws in the story. Nice try though: 2.5 out of 5 stars.

I also recently watched Extracted. In a nut shell this is about getting into someone's head... Literally. It has one scientific fatal flaw but if you can suspend belief, the story line is very well thought out, character development is excellent and it all just works for letting the imagination run wild; plus some really good acting IMO. I really enjoyed this one. 4 out of 5 stars.

Next on the list is Z for Zachariah.
