This is a great thread. Here's a minimalist gem from Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy).

Oooh yeah, I tend to like music that can be described with “haunting” adjective.

A degree of haunting is added when you know the artist suicided irl. For example: Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, Nirvana.

I heard this one off of the NYT weekly music roundup, it seems to fit (and sounds entrancing on headphones)

    Mabe Fratti - "Nadie Sabe"

Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis and Fantasia on Greensleeves definitely apply to this category. Thomas Tallis still gives me shivers down through my entire body when I listen to it, and that's been many times.

I have to admit I bought this CD for (2) songs on it: Heart Shaped World and Wicked Games. To me, Isaak's vocals and lyrics, plus the great guitar and bass lines throughout Wicked Games make it a haunting song for sure. Don't forget the background singer's line(s) in the chorus too.

Recent discovery, this one. It's apparently a cover of a song by Nat King Cole but... I couldn't for the life of me remember ever having heard that one. Whoops.

My favorite of Bach's six cello suites (no. 1) sounds wonderful on the 5-octave marimba.

Can't think of anything more haunting than Erik Truffaz on trumpet, Murcof on laptop and Talvin Singh on tabla.

(and this is easier listening than the cassette tape someone made for me 3 decades ago...I need to find that tape)
