At this point I feel like they're just pushing the boundaries with what sort of bullshit they can get away with.

But of course you'll still get the overused "you're not allowed to judge until you've heard it!" response.

Well a difference was heard, therefore there must be one. Once you throw out the fact that "bits are bits" (even when considered in the context of a non-realtime data transfer), pretty much anything is on the table.

Bullshit aside, I'll be honest. I actually want something like their Nimitra, just 10x cheaper.

If it comes with blu ray, better. (Which is something Linux can't handle currently AFAIK... maybe ever).

EDIT: Their CPU choice does not seem all that great, or powerful enough against it's peers. So will have to keep looking. It's a good concept IMO... micro-HTPC.

Next we'll be hearing about which times of day or months of the year are better for transferring files to your audio playback device of choice to obtain optimal sound quality.

Why not just get a Synology and use Plex? Might be a cheaper alternative and allows you to store more then just music.

Well, if you look at their sample applications, they are using a Synology actually, probably using Plex. Scroll down their linky:

    http://www.fidelizer-audio.com/nimitra-computer-audio-server/

Their PC then hooks to a DAC.

They seem to be selling an HTPC more than a NAS or server.

I use a ReadyNAS, but I don't use Plex (though I could). My ReadyNAS is basically just a fairly large network drive. When using the computer with my network driver, I just use foobar2k, VLC and sometimes in a blue moon XBMC and stuff like that.

They seem to sell the idea/fact that they Fidelize Castro your Windows 10 (dunno what that means), and provide you with Teamster Viewer support.

Seems like an overpriced snake oil campaign. There isn't any magical settings in Windows 10 that you should be paying $1500 for. Great and all that they provide "Teamster Viewer support" but that is silly and all company's should provide customer support if they sell a product.

Who knows. Maybe they have their own secret sauce ASIO driver or the likes.

Like many things, it does not give me an itch to get it. Mainly because I'm curious about other things.

I maybe on the market for a small super awesome PC... But it would have to have a super awesome low price tag to qualify for a "cheap bastid club" seal of approval.

Depending what you want to use it for you can check this out: http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-3050-micro-desktop/pd

Small form factor and pretty good specs for the price. Works good if you want to use it for streaming music/movies to a tv or something like that. I personally use it to watch movies from my server on my TV or browse the internet. Pair it with that wireless Logitech Keyboard with the built in mouse for a slam dunk.

I would look at the Intel NUC or an SBC like the Rasperry Pi with hifipi.

I could follow that if a music file is fragmented that could effect the sound in some applications; assuming anyone here does hear the differences between file transfer methods I'd be curious if the differences were still audible after a defrag. Similarly where on a HDD a file is stored does affect access speed, back in the day I remember PC nerds creating small Windows partitions when building their PC to reserve the quickest accessed part of the disc for all OS operations.

No. Bits are bits. The clock is attached to the data after it has been load from disk and buffered. I've experimented with having foobar load the entire file before playing. Ended up going back to the default behavior because it would cause glitches between tracks while the next one was loaded into RAM.

I feel people probably do not hear differences between file transfer methods. Possible issues may have little to do with the storage and transfer method, and more to do with the details and non-idealities of implementation.

And unless things are royally fucked, I feel non-idealities of implementation are less of a problem with electronics relative to transducer and recording/mastering issues.

To be honest, I would stop sweating about the micro-improvements or downfalls when comparing between USB vs optical, BNC vs SMA coax, WIFI vs Bluetooth, quantum tunneling vs photonic transmission, warp drive vs hyper drive, and focus more on individual performance of quality gear (whatever the price), and quality music.

Computer sound is too good. It just works, except when it doesn't. People need to listen to some bad systems with dropouts, distortion, power-supply hum.

But there is an increasing number of "computer audiophiles." Probably, their computer skills end at using the media player and the browser. They have zero understanding, not even elementary, about how computers work. That gives them the freedom to make it up as they go along. And they are getting noisier. Worse than the worst power supply noise on the nastiest-for-audio laptop is the row they make.

My advice to the world: avoid these people, or treat what they say as fiction. Of course, they are free to believe their own ears, but what is between those ears is seriously mixed up. Dangerous.
