Hi, I decided to sign in after lurking for couple years. I consider SBAF valuable source for my growing knowledge in audio and other stuff too.

Hello. Hottyson here. I come from an earlier time of Headwize. Where audio enthusiasts gathered and exchanged with another with manners and intelligence. It seems that is lost upon the new generation and sadly most of the audio forums are lost and flooded with lowlifes. If you know who cmoy, Apheared, ppl, morsel, eric343, tangent, Jan Meier, kevin gilmore, Fixup, antness, aos, JMT, jude are, then you know where I am coming from. My hope is that this forum will present an atmosphere that once was twenty years ago.

Hi, I discovered this hobby in the early days of COVID when I thought I ought to upgrade my Xiaomi IEMs if I was going to be working from home for an extended amount of time. I bought a DAC but no amp (hey, they're iems!). The found tubes, then found the 6XX did not excite me and through a lot of experimentation I thought that a dark, warm sound was my preferred signature (Nighthawks, Argons, LCD2C, EMU Teaks) until I got an old NB Stax Lambda and then proceeded to sell of all my dynamic and planars to move into estat-land. I still have my Lawton'd Teaks, Sundaras, my own modded SR-80e, ModHouse'd SHP9500 bra phones and some D5200s I got during that BF deal period - otherwise, I listen to my NB Lambdas, L300 LE, Hives and Kaldas RR1s on my SRM-006t. Recently got a good-condition Jecklin Float and a Transdyn 2 and would like to one day get a Sigma and a KGSSHV. I also have an SRM-T1S that I want to either sell or mod.

    Howdy folks,

New account after lurking for a few months. A recent refugee from AVS (same user name) after a work-related move and drastic residential downsizing --> no more home theater. Over there I had a good swim though the DIY pool, along with REW measuring and lots of subwoofer and room treatment "experiments" in the basement. My wife is glad that's no longer an option... Anyway, I liquidated my HT gear over the last year so I theoretically have some funds to play with headphones.

I picked up a pair of HD6XX Black Friday 2019, and a FiiO Q5 to drive them balanced. That was OK until the DIY itch came back, so I turned some birthday cash into a Bottlehead Crack this past summer (great COVID project, btw) and have been enjoying that with the Q5 in line-out mode while working from home.

Sounds pretty great to me so far, but... what am I missing? I guess I finally got around to posting this as I'm getting more serious about taking the dreaded Next Step. How to improve the system without going broke? Drooling over ZMFs (Aeolus and Auteur in particular) and kicking myself for being in the wrong hobby while living in Chicago! (now in SoCal). Or HD800s at the right price. A DAC to complement the Crack, maybe something R2R or a BF2. Don't really want to screw around with something in the middle - I know how upgraditis works and at this point I'd rather just save for the right stuff than climb the ladder. So, I will be lurking some more - but if anybody actually reads this and has any pointers, fire away!

The "smart" choice is to wait until COVID is over and try stuff at meets, shows, etc. Since I'm not smart, I continue to buy and then return or sell what I don't like.

ZMFs are a great upgrade path if you like the HD 6XX (still one of my favorites). They now accept returns minus a restocking fee so you don't have to rely on reselling if you don't like one of them. Despite how highly recommended they are, some of us don't like the highly regarded Verite (me), while others feel that way about the Autuer. So it's not necessarily clear what you should get, individual taste is still most important. I find Atticus/Aeolus pretty safe if you're OK with a more "fun flavored" headphone. ZMFs are great at scaling but some are amp picky such as the Autuer. Atticus is also safer here, I find it sounds good on everything I've tried so far, much like the HD 6XX. It simply sounds better on some amps vs others.

I like the HD 800 but it's not for everyone and definitely amp picky, I would highly recommend trying on your desired chain first, it's very different from the HD 6XX.

For now I'd put more effort into headphones and pairing them with an amp that synergizes well before diving into the DAC.

Obligatory introduction. Haven't messed much with Hifi in years. borrowed my brother's PC37x's and realized I was missing a lot...
Audioengine D1 to start, then Atom stack, and E30/L30
Now I have HD560s and PC38x with HD6xx coming soon.

What's up ladies and gents! I'm usually not TOO much of a dotard, so I'm introducing myself! I've been lurking and reading on this forum for a few years, but never registered as I don't really feel I have too much to contribute - you guys seem so deep in this hobby it almost makes me feel like a noob (after 27 years!)! Anyway, FWIW, I'm in Central NJ, I like closed back cans, rock music, all types of expensive schiit, and cars.

    Intro post:
Hey all, new guy here. Not super new to audio though. The addiction started with car audio when I was much younger. But now I am caught in the never ending loop of changing home audio and headphones.

Hello audio friends. I am a gatherer of information for my own personal use in obtaining the best possible sound in my system. I like to and am always happy to share what I discover and help others out as well if I can. My research has brought me to this forum many times. I figured its finally time to join and possibly participate. Although I am not a headphone guy, I think we all speak the same language. LOL
Any way here I am, the mighty Zoophaugus from the great white north...

    Hi,
I'm electrostatic creature with some Stax stuff, Jecklin and and ESL-63 (all of them repaired by me).
The long winter evenings I'm spending soldering my own valve amplifiers and playing World of Warcraft and Starcraft :)
I'm really happy to find this place.
    BR, Krzysztof

    Hi All,

    TL;DR:
I’m a complete noob who stumbled on this site looking to understand midfi and hifi setups, have been lurking and will continue to do so, but wanted to say hi and thank you for the knowledge and content!

    Full:
My name is Adam, I’m a Software Engineer from Chicago. I’m a music and sports junky, PC hardware enthusiast, and car guy (JDM, also love driving stick).

I’ve been a music junky since I was a kid. Started off with pop-punk/grunge, then got into 90’s rap/hip-hop, and then college introduced me to house music. I basically listen to everything except pop and country (I do love 80’s synth-pop, classic rock, and some metal).

About a year ago, I decided to try out a desktop listening setup. That setup consists of a schiit stack (Modi/Loki/Magni 3+), and the HFM Devas which were recommended to me by a discord channel. I feel like I’m not even scratching entry level midfi, but it was a substantial change for me and I loved it (subjectively speaking of course).

That said, the upgrade seemed to mostly benefit hip-hop, house, and synth pop. My punk rock, pop-punk, and indie music collection doesn’t get touched as much as it used to. I haven’t fully read all the definitions you all have written out on the right terminology to use, so I won’t try to explain it in a technical sense. Subjectively speaking, it feels like guitar riffs aren’t as powerful, and the vocal tracks in those songs aren’t as intimate.

This led me on a search to figure out what other headphones would make sense to pair my Devas with (don’t need to answer this), and that search led me here. I’ve been lurking for a bit and wanted to join because:

    1. The depth of knowledge and experience you guys have is awesome
    2. The no-bs straight to the point way you all approach each topic is similar to how I approach discussions regarding topics that can be seen objectively based on measurements and other facts (everyone on here seems to also understand that subjective opinions are okay as long as they are given as opinions and not facts)

As a complete noob that doesn’t even know if my current setup would be considered entry midfi, this site has been awesome to learn from and lurk around. I want to continue to do so for sometime since I bring no expertise, but wanted to say hi and thank you for the content!

    Hey hey,

Been lurking here since probably around 2017. Appreciate all the valuable info and effort you guys put in. Made a profile so I could ask some questions I've got for certain members.

I make music. That's more where I come at this from. But I'm also an audiophile in the sense that I can hear detail and am in love. I just can get euphoric from cheap shit easily also. Lol. All my best

Hey, before I formally introduce myself I have a few confessions to make.
I'm 26, not 36 and I tried to continuously join whilst being in a state of disbelief that I was considered too young.
I'm new to the Audiophile scene and wish I were a member here before I made investments into some products.
I'm very interested in positional audio and imaging, I'm constantly looking to learn (about it) and improve my set up and knowledge in regards to the subject.
I brought myself here through being thoroughly impressed by the amount of effort and detail people give. I truly appreciate those who have put in tremendous effort and I'm thankful for being here.
Oh, please don't discriminate on me because of my age, I'm technically not meant to be alive right now because of a condition I was born with (supposedly meant to die a few years back) I was also told verbally as a child that there was a 96% chance I was meant to be deaf, I didn't know how to respond as a child but now I use it as a joke and say I'm really good at lip reading.
I seek to have the best experience I can with Audio now and primarily use it to enhance my hobby of gaming. Anyway, I'm here to learn and not let what interests me fall on deaf ears and by the looks of things I'm not dropping dead anytime soon. Nice meeting you all. :)

Hello. I'm an audiophile. Got my first great set of speakers in 2013, over time gravitated more towards the headphones and now got my ears turned to the current IEM revolution.

Hi there, I have been playing music since I was 8 but I never paid much attention onto sound quality (being a dumb rock guitarist I guess). Only recently I started being attracted by audiophile stuff. I have been looking around for a good place where to start and this seemed to me a nice community. Looking to learn something.
