Hello SBAF. Long time lurker to this forum - longer time headphone geek. I've always been obsessed with headphones, and it was quite a revelation in the early days of the internet that there were others out there who were similarly or even more obsessed. As a kid I found "audiophiles" (a rare enough group anyways) would look down on headphones (probably with good justification, especially historically), but since all I owned that sounded good were headphones, I thought I was just unique in that aspect.

I've probably listened to just about everything out there (huuuuuge fan of the HE90s, even after hearing the SR-009s, etc.) but I make do with modded HD800s - probably helps that I'm over 40 now, so my HF hearing is probably not as sharp as back in the days when I thought everything sounded too bright on the average recording). Between the mod and a little eq (if needed) I find them pretty good, and even a decent value used, now that people are slinging $4k TOTLs cans left and right.

I'm still looking to make the plunge into the world of electrostats, just bummed that I can't buy the HE90s and end my search for better headphones permanently. I do like Stax quite a bit, the 007s mkI being a particular favorite, it's just hard to find / take the plunge on the BHSE that they surely deserve. It will happen some day I'm sure, unless Sennheiser takes a 2nd shot at a HE-90 re-issue, the skipping of which I will always regret.

In the short term, I'm looking for a better DAC that the PWD and DAC2 that I tolerate but don't love. Yggdrasil is leading the list right now.

I'm an engineer by profession, so I like seeing measurements and getting that little thrill when you predict the sound of headphones (or any gear, really) before you've heard them - and the shock when the reality of their sound differs from predictions. But first and foremost, I'm in it to enjoy the music.

    Hey All,

Getting back into Audio, started, became very active, started reviewing, meet some real assholes, started getting burnt out, dipping my toe into the pond. Then HFM launches their new $6K thing and I'm begging to think sinking my time and multiple net into competitive shooting is a better use of my time and money. Though the competitive shooting services may be purchased, at which point I can afford $6K marginally better headphones and Marvey's Amps (;)).

    Hi !

My name is Ryan Straightrope, I'm 25, from France (and from the french community Tellement Nomade). My english is pretty awful (sorry), and I'm happy with my LCD2.2 non fazor (I'm a basshead, I guess) and his Mjolnir mark I (I know : so 2012, but I hate hypes and FOTM).

Welcome. Don't be ashamed. I've had a listen to that exact headphone/amplifier combo, and I was quite impressed. No need to go further if you don't want to...

Hello. I'm one of those "HD6xx" randos you've been waiting for. I've been lurking since the drop was announced and this website has been a huge resource for me, particularly the Modi Multibit and Bottlehead Crack (which I bought) threads. After initial burn-in and firing everything up for the first time I told myself "this is it" and swore I wouldn't be changing anything until next winter when I could budget for audio again. Ha. Fast forward three days and I had a few tubes, and an alps potentiometer on order. Speedball will go in soon, and I'm studying up on installing fly wires and zip tie mounts at the same time to accommodate a future output cap upgrade. Plus, my amazing (to me) new headphone setup has me feeling like my 2 channel setup needs a serious overhaul. Looks like I'm stuck here, hope y'all don't mind if I noob it up in for a bit!

    Hello from Sydney everyone!

I just got a proper job mid last year and finally bought a HD650 after fawning for 3 years, Christmas time. Also jumped the gun and bought the Jot with the built in DAC a few days ago, despite planning for a cheapo dac/amp.

Stumbled upon SBAF after researching for a good cheapo dac/amp and feeling a bit weirded out by some HF forum postings. Naturally I went with Schiit.

You guys seems cool, and I believe I can learn more from you guys.

EDIT: Going to Japan in a few months. I might end up with a Stax.

I've been around in HF for many years mostly as a lurker and occasional poster. Never cared enough to get involved in any of the controversies there but the community has definitely changed since I joined almost a decade ago. Started off my audio journey with Koss KSC75 and still think they are the a great gateway to showing people what good headphones can do to music. I eventually moved through gear and was lucky enough to like and keep most of the stuff I got. I've been at my "end-game" for awhile now with HD600/HD800 Schiit Mjolnir/Gungnir stack and thoroughly enjoy them even with their deficiencies. Right now I'm trying some IEMs to see if it's worth it to invest in some higher end stuff or just stick with the cheap/replaceable IEMs. I've also been wowed by speakers now that I'm in my own place so that has also stifled any headphone purchases.

I'm a industrial/product designer by trade and fairly new out of school so I appreciate interesting forms combined with impressed engineering. I think most product designers go through a headphone phase =).

Just getting started in the headphone audio world and google always leads me to reddit, headfi, or youtube. Great to find another community here. I lurk a lot because audio can be subjective (especially to those of us just starting out) and it's hard to find a place share opinions in a place where you won't get crushed for it.

Anyways, looking forward to browsing the threads and archives here to expand my knowledge. Cheers.

Lots of people seem to rate the 2.2 non-Fazor better than some of their subsequent stuff, oddly. Personally, I have no clue, having only heard the Fazor. Still, there's nothing wrong with finding a transducer you enjoy and sticking with it long-term.. isn't that generally what we want to do? The endless sidegrade treadmill is bad for the mind and the wallet- so if you can be happy, you've won.

Oh, and so far, your English seems to make perfect sense. Don't worry!

    Hi all,
I've been lurking (without even registering) for a while here and in other forums too. First off, I apoligize I thought it'd be okay for me to delay my intro here a bit and still be okay to do a couple of posts (wanted to write up a proper intro).

Anyways: I can't remember how I got into audio, but my first pair of good HPs was the SRH840. I LOVED the detail on that, from the get go it was so awesome. and the sound was warm and velvety almost. BUT something was missing. So started my journey, unfortunately I travel a lot between asia/US/Canada so taking the time out to visit a local sound shop to try stuff is usually out of the question for me. Since then I've owned AKGk271 (love the non existant bass on this, as im a bit sensetive to bass, or was at the time), B&W P7 and recently TH-X00.

I mainly listen to progressive (including psychedelic, folk rock etc) and post grunge. As for sound, I'm the complete opposite of the trend that seems to have taken over the population of over emphasized bass. I do appreciate a good thump but it doesn't take much at all for me to go from "ooh!" to "gaah my ears! So loud!" when it comes to bass. I hadn't been able to hear anything above 14khz for a long time (likely mentally i ignored it) but recently that has also changed (thank you AKG), so getting used to all the new "highs" i haven't heard before.

I also own an Ifi idsd micro (bought with/for the TH-X00's), fiio e18 and DX80.

Oh and lastly, I avoid open, anything sennheiser and over use of plastic (since i travel a lot, my HPs need to be able to take a bit of beating).

Anyways, I'd love to hear some suggestions on what Headphones or gear you guys think I'd like. I like trying out new gears! I'm thinking my next venture will be trying some tubes, I hear they sound awesome!

Edit: I'd like to add, my response upon first hearing my TH-X00's for a few hours was the following facebook post: "IDK what the hell i've been listening to the last 20 odd years, but if THIS is what music is supposed to be THAT sure as hell wasn't it." The details and transparency and imaging on these are like i have NEVER heard before.

    Dear Super Best Audio Friends,

I've been on head-fi for about 5 years and hot damn, but its getting bad. The dumb ones have the loudest voices, the fan boys come in wolf packs, and seeking objectivity gets you banned. I've been poking about these here parts for a few days and like the balance of smarm and care. At the risk of oversimplifying, members here seem like the perfect blend of the Comic Book Guy and Ned Flanders.

    Can I be your friend?
