    Hi everyone!

Used to lurk around chang a few years back, but lost my interest in 'phones as I set-up my home theater. Sold off my HD600, HD800 and LCD3.

Anyway, back again to the headphone world because I moved in a small apartment recently, don't want the neighbours to complain about noise!

Bought a brand new HD650 for a fresh start.

    Hello!

Been lurking a lot here, very impressed with the depth of knowledge and systematic approach to audio here.

Converted to all tubes about a year ago, which I never thought I would. I listen to both headphones (HE 400i) and speakers (MoBy, LM 518ia, LS50).

Currently going through USB clean up hell and just discovered the threads about Raspberry pi + spdif options here. It never stops!

Nah, this is the place that tells you to stop buying random shit*, learn your preferences, and maximise your bang for buck. How much "buck" you wish to spend on "bang" is up to you. It's quite common for people to suggest you not spend money.

It's also a place full of audio nerds, some of whom might help you get closer to the sound that you enjoy. I hope that you do- welcome aboard!

    * Which you may or may not be doing. Not judging you.

Recently learned about this site from some friends and started looking around.

Very nice and glad I found it.

I've been building amps for about nine years now. I do my own board / chassis designs as well as my own metal work on a home made cnc mill.

I'm looking forward to rummaging around.

Former Grado fan. Mine eyes were opened by the HD600, and opened wider by the HD650. My mind was blown by a borrowed Fostex THX-00 shortly after aquiring my HD650.

Now I only own a THX-00 and my maple GS1000 clone.

I run an ODAC Rev. A with a Vali 2 and an O2. I also run an ODAC rev. B given to me by George at Yoyodyne. I use this with my self built OPA1622 based amp in a custom wooden enclosure that I built.

I am looking to build a vintage dac based on the BB PCM1732.

I am a Software Engineer by trade, Civil Engineer by education, and music lover at heart. I love to work on electronics projects.

Favorite bands are: Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, Foo Fighters, Kyuss and Fu Manchu.

Howdy all. I'm an amateur musician and audio nut. I have a nice two channel setup and I'm thinking of getting a headphone rig at some point. I found this place looking for reviews of Schiit gear (I have the Bifrost Uber being updated to the mulitibit, on its way). I recently moved and for the first time have a dedicated listening room with treatments. I'm always looking for easy (cheap!) ways to improve sound. Mostly I just enjoy the music without sweating too much about whether everything sounds perfect. My own enjoyment changes day to day, I think a lot of how we perceive sound/music is a function of physiological and psychological factors that wax and wane. I used to be more of a hard core objectivist but I now remain firmly in neither/both camp as I don't believe the typical measurements capture all the things that entail the sound we perceive. I enjoy tube gear but find obsessive tube rolling leads to madness. Here endeth my introduction.

    Hi, I'm bazelio.
    • I prefer an open/fast/clean/lucid presentation but only in service of organic musicality.
    • I have finally learned to steer clear of excessively detailed/analytical/"hifi" sounding products.
    • I've also learned to categorically avoid slow/tubey/euphonic colorations that hinder PRaT and openness.
    • I seek the ever-elusive "live" sound.
    Thank you.

Been lurking around as a reader but not much as a member. Been into head fi for about ten years. Gone through roughly every headphone possible till I had my trifecta - HE6, HD800, K1000. Don't have the first two anymore as I want to see some of these interesting new drivers being utilized.

Tube amp fan, especially 300b monos. You really don't know the full soundstage of a headphone until you have an amp for each channel.

Looking forward to adding my experience with equipment to the group and learning more.

Hi, been lurking here on and off for the past few months. Previously frequented Head-Fi a couple of years ago when I was first getting started in the hobby, started reading here when I noticed it seemed all around a bit more sane.
Sitting in the Mid-Fi realm currently and not sure whether to move on up.

Current Gear: HiFiMAN HE-400i, Oppo PM-3 (portable), Schiit Lyr and Schiit Modi.

Music tastes vary wildly, depending on mood. Listen to most genres except maybe Pop and Country music. Some of my favourite bands/artists are probably Dads, Old Gray, Knola, Pink Floyd, Austin Wintory, Haywyre and more.

Hoping to learn more, and save myself from bad purchases.

    Hi all,

Similar story to many. Got my start over at head-fi about 5 years ago and have been lurking here for about 6 months. Thought it might be time to enlist. I'm definitely liking the culture I'm seeing here. Have amazingly been pretty conservative with my audio purchases, probably because I'm cheap (used deals and craigslist has been good to me). I own the following.

DAC: Odac, Emotiva Dc-1, LG-V10 (ESS SABRE 9018)
    Amp: O2, Emotiva Dc-1, Lg-V10, Pioneer Sa-9800
    Headphones: HD 650, HE-500, Q701, V-moda m80
    IEM: Etymotic HF5
Speakers: Dahlquist DQ-18, Infinity Prelude P-FR

Hello all, i always forget to post in these new member threads, anyway..

I have been into headphones for a couple of years now, i consider the best sounding pair ive owned to be the NAD HP50's, i had to sell these for comfort reasons and i reckon my DT150's sound 95% as good. I went to Canjam London last year and i hope to go to the Meets this year, hopefully i will meet some of you and be able to see what all the fuss about the HD650 is.
Music tastes are stuff like Hendrix, Cream, Zeppelin, King Crimson and slightly newer things, Primus, Mars Volta, Melvins.
Im here mainly to learn and maybe sneak on a loaner program,

    Cheers! |{

    Hello There!

Im a 35 year old Locksmith, father of two beautiful girls, and have a passion for Audio, and home theatre, computers, and gaming. Im also a member of headfi with the same user name. My first headphone amplifier was a HeadRoom solid state amp back in the early 2000's, followed by a Head Room Hybrid amp, my first pair of good headphones were DT880's, i've played with various sources over the years, MHDT Dialog was one of my first, followed by Channel Islands Audio, I had quite the setup back in 2005, but met my wife around the same time and my priorities shifted from solo activities to more family oriented, I sold most of my headphone gear and bought HT equipment, as time has moved on i've been able to slowly creep back into the headphone game. I eventually got into DIY gear, and built an AMB CMOY, followed by an AMB Mini3, I tinkered with some TDA1543 DAC's modding, and ended up buying a pair of Denon D2k's, MarkL modded them, progressed further down the TDA1543 line, eventually landing on a Teradak Chamelon, that I heavily modified, I also built DIY Power Cords, and cables during this time, learned to solder, learned how to use a Volt Ohm Meter, learned some basic electronics, etc. I eventually came to not believe in power cords and expensive interconnects, beyond well built and well made. I built an O2 amp in the very beginning of that project, before they were cool. I kind of had a love/hate relationship with the O2 and NWAVGUY, as everything he said made sense, im also a member of ARS Technica's forums (Username Essense), they are a rather no-nonsense bunch, not too kind to audiophoolery. So the NWAVGUY and ARS Technica people somewhat ruined what passion I had for this hobby, for a good while.

I went for a good 3-4 years, after I built my O2 amp / DAC combo, mostly satisfied, I did build a really sweet set of DIY Soundgroup Elusive 1099's for my HT LCR, followed by some DIYSOUNDGROUP VOLT 10 LX for my surrounds, combined with an old AV123 MFW15 subwoofer, that' i've since upgraded the Amplifier on (Seaton is fricking awesome for supporting this thing so many years after ol shifter has been shut down)

That was a huge project, expensive, and took me a long time to complete, but I did it right, and the end result was fantastic.

So, recently, I really got tired of the O2's connections, or lack of robustness in said connections, the irritating front mounted power supply, the 1/8 connectors, the small size, etc. I was still pretty happy with it's performance, but just tired of it's form factor. Also, somewhat annoyed at having to use a separate amp for my Passive speakers on my PC Setup, witch were some pretty good (but aging) Paradigm Studio 20's V3. That brings me to, today. I wanted to reduce the clutter in my PC setup, so I started doing some research again, turns out a little company called Schiit has turned the whole industry upside down. Sold the O2, and the Paradigm's, bought JBL LSR305's and a Jotunheim, still rocking the D2000's, but im looking to change them soon. Always were a bit to bright for my taste.

Really enjoying the Jotunheim, using it's balanced DAC as a source, with balanced connections to my D2k ( i reterminated) and balanced pre-outs to the JBL LSR 305's. Thinking back to the Old head room days, back in 05, realizing that a similar amp would have cost me 2500$. Man, it's a good time to be in the hobby. Im not a big beliver in DAC"s anymore, part of the "NWAVYGUY Effect", I suppose. Sadly , I actually shelved my Chamelon, it's been sitting in the closet for 5 years, hilariously reading the recent SBAF thread on "NOS DACS", made me realize I had this "Multi-Bit" behemoth just sitting in the closet unused. It's still back there... waiting. Might have to fire it up soon, see if I can remember why I bought it. I don't know, im still skeptical.

Schiit has managed to snap me out of it a little bit as of late, the Jotunheim is certainly an upgrade over the O2, I can hear it, even with D2K's, if ol NWAVGUY was right, I shouldent notice this much difference, expectation bias? I don't know, I don't think so. Perhaps I just like the warmer nature, the O2 was always rather... sterile.

I will never go back to buying 150$ power cords, or 100$ Interconnects, of witch I am guilty. Because of my DIY experience, I have enough understanding of basic electronics to see past that nonsense. I've moved beyond that, but I do hope to one day be able to enjoy the hobby again, perhaps even Tubes, knowing that what im hearing is a pleasant aberration of the original signal. Being ok with that, and just enjoying the music.

    Hello all!

I'm a lapsed HF member (gasp!), but lost interest around 2012 or thereabouts. I somehow managed to avoid spending an insane amount working on my audio rig before finding some semblance of contentment, but that's more likely than not due to the fact that I was a college undergrad at the time and didn't exactly have much disposable income. The AKG K550 and a Fiio portable amp (I can't recall the exact model and Googling rings no bells) served me well for a good while afterwards. The both of them eventually gave up the ghost on account of my using them as transportables and not being too great about preserving my things *cough*

Another reason I set the audio hobby aside was because I found something else to obsess over, namely fountain pens and calligraphy. It's something I'm still quite passionate about, so although I'm having a good deal of fun rediscovering the joys of audio gear, I'm far more likely to spend >$1000 on a nice pen that'll last me a lifetime than on an amplifier that's obsolete almost as soon as I get my hands on it, haha.

By the by, the reason I got back into audio in the first place is because I met a person in my local pen group who was neck-deep in it. Got to demo [A&K DAP>Cypher Labs Theorem 720>Lake People G109A>Sennheiser HD800 (modded)] and my rig seemed cripplingly inadequate all of a sudden. Screw that dude, says my bank account.

Currently on [source>iFi Micro iDSD>Beyer DT880 Premium (250Ohm)], but thanks to this forum (which is really useful, by the way) I decided I'd get a Fostex THX00 Ebony and probably get a discrete amp besides, keeping the iDSD to serve as a DAC and as a transportable solution. Also learned CSDs>FR graphs.

My taste in music ranges from lounge and jazz to alt rock, classical, and Emilie Autumn. Used to like metal a lot, but I don't listen to it nearly as often nowdays. I just started listening to Kate Bush today and I'm quite obsessed— listening to The Dreaming as I type. Besides collecting fancy writing sticks and practising fancy doodles, I enjoy reading and promising myself I'd pick up writing again in my spare time. I still play video games whenever I can and keep up with new anime. Take that as you will.

    Cheers,

    Kevin
