Hmm, I wonder if this depends on the quality of the USB implementation. I have two identical Belkin Gold USB cables and a Yggdrasil, so thats as good a USB implementation as it gets to test.

I have a Belkin Gold, very good cable, a bit soft and warm and not quite as open as the wireworld in my systems. Very capable, especially for the price. One can go a bit nuts on USB cables with their megabuck prices. My $250 bespoke custom built is about as far as I would go. FYI, a good reasonably priced ($120 I believe) USB cable that my friend likes a lot is the Mapleshade. He also has one of the bespoke powerlegless usb cables that I used. He prefers the sound of his diy cut Mapleshade to mine on his QB-9 dac.

So I'm planning to get the Gungnir Multibit, as far as cables go, I have zilch. So for the xlr balanced and USB cables, any monoprice cable would do or shall I order PYST along with the Gungnir Multibit??

Also I have no idea about my USB quality from my PC or laptop, so do I get a WYRD too??

I don't think you'll go wrong with PYST and the Wyrd will most likely make a positive difference at worst.

So I was about to order the Gungnir Multibit and mj2, my luck, the Gungnir Multibit 230V is shipping only by early November.
So I was eyeing the bifrost and that got me thinking.

    Spoiler alert! Conspiracy theory abound,
Will the Gungnir Multibit also get a D/A chip upgrade like the bifrost?? On loose reading looks like the AKM Verita® AK4490 is the latest and greatest among the two!

Ok! Now you can make me walk the plank!

First let's get the official nomenclature right for these Schiit dacs. The Gungnir Multibit is the multibit version of the Gungnir. So, no, a Gungnir Multibit cannot get a DS chip upgrade.

Now, as for the possibility of a AK4490 showing up on some other Schiit dacs. Sure it is possible, there are currently three dacs sporting AK43xx chips that may be ripe for an upgrade at some point. But so far none have been made official.

    Thanks Bixby!
And thanks again for exposing this noob!
LOL! On further note, just realized I had completely missed the multibit portion of the specs page. To justify, I was on mobile!...

    Still! Shame on me...

Well, technically it's just the Gungnir D/S that still has the AKM4399; the Modi 2 has the AKM4396. But of course you are correct, sir, both of these might be candidates for new implants.

The interesting question for me is whether Gungnir Multibit will ever get the USB Gen3 upgrade. It is a long expensive round trip back from Shanghai. Oh well, it is just an additional option if it happens. Options are always good.

Or you could always add Wyrd into your chain. A new Wyrd is about an extra 8% cost stacked on top of Gungnir Multibit, which isn't a lot IMO.

Yes, I already have Wyrd. And I definitely will be using it with Gungnir Multibit. It has made a surprisingly big difference with my current DAC.

So maybe that is the answer, USB Gen3 would not add a lot. I do not know.

What are people's thoughts on Grace Design?
I heard the M920 at Canjam with their stock HD800's and my HD650's that I brought with me, and I was very impressed.

I bring this up now because Massdrop just released the M9XX on their site today. Seems like a nice tidy little unit from a design aspect.
The price isn't terribly outrageous either. This one uses an AKM AK4490 chip vs the Sabre32 in the M920.
I don't intend to join the drop, but seeing it reminded me that the Grace M920 was a really nice piece of gear to my ears.

M920 was resolving, but too Sabrey for my ears. In the overall scheme of things, Grace doesn't overprice given their feature sets. The Lynx Hilo seems like a much better deal though than the Grace m920.

As for the M9XX, it's hard to make an AKM based DAC sound shitty.

I think Jason commented on this before and said there are currently no plans to implement USB Gen3 in the Gungnir Multibit.

It might just be Yggdrasil exclusive for the time being. Fingers crossed though.

What do you suppose the odds are that we might see a Modi 3 before x-mas? Like a Modi with the new AKM chip, or who knows.
