Well done, Marv. And succinct as usual. With one or two minor exceptions I am in general agreement with respect to gear that I have heard. Glad I am not losing my mind on the Ether-C. I read what people are writing on the other site and just scratch my head. This place is a great sanity check.

Honestly, I think people here have enough brains and independence to see this list as just another data point and to ultimately exercise their own judgment with respect to purchases. Marv has said repeatedly he is not looking for sycophants or minions and I am sure people here will disagree with his evaluations on any number of the products, as apparently you do, and act accordingly.

Reviews/impressions may help guide me to what to seek out, but then I try as best I can to demo gear before purchasing. That is not always possible so then I seek out a range of opinions and try to make the best informed decision I can.

Also, people at certain other sites seem to get bent out of shape if everyone does not share their opinions and tastes. Fortunately that does not seem to be the case here for the most part. I am certainly not going to get bent out of shape because the PM-2 which I am quite fond of is "only" a G instead of a VG. And I am one of the few people who does not think the K812 sucks; c'est la vie.

But I do appreciate the effort to counter the hype found all too often elsewhere.

I still don't understand why majority of well known people (especially in the speaker world) really like audeze headphone from many review I have read. Even most hated model on this forum (EL-8) seems to get a good review.

Because at least 1. the majority of the core members here are f'ing nitpickers that are extremely hard to please, and 2. Audeze responded to their sonic QC inconsistency with shitty Fazor elements

Urging people not to total the scores on the heptagrams is not the same as not ranking gear on sound quality. I have ranked gear numerically (DAC thread in HF), graphically (2D DAC chart), in six different aspects (heptagrams), and now in four different classifications (here). Each method for a different purpose and specific reason.

I would like to know this as well. Personally I prefer universals as they are less expensive and has a higher resale value, and Noble claims there should be no difference in SQ between universal and custom at least "in theory"... but I'm not sure if I'm actually losing a lot by going universal instead of custom.

I think the QP1R / N4 would be the way to go.

New lists for MoatsArt who thinks we shouldn't compare headphones based on sound quality, I propose the following:

    - Beautiful headphones and headphones you take on a pity date. EL-8s, you know where you fall on that list
    - Sturdy headphones and headphones that get crushed easily when your pity date sits on them. (Audezes again. Geez)
    - Amount of TP required for fixing (According to Marv, I believe this is all of them?)
    - Hype-factor vs. reality. The Phantom Menace award. Hugo has had this locked up for years, but there are many strong contenders
    - Looks most like something designed by Captain Kirk. Probably my EC Transcriptor would win this one
    - Most likely for MoatsArt to write man, many strong disagreeable opinions
    - Most likely for non-US residents to declare is better in their country
    - Hawaiian shirt award for the most needle piercing treble

One premise of CS, and by extension SuperBAF, was there will always be disagreement on what is best or better, and that one should not be afraid of saying what is best, with the implicit understanding that best means what is best to them. For example, if someone were to ask me what is the best religion (or non-religion), I will easily answer with the one which I feel is the best, at least for me. It would make no sense for me to subscribe to that religion if I did not feel it was the best.

I don't think people should hold back for saying what gear they feel is best or better because they don't want to ruffle any feathers or get someone upset at them. There is a term for people who are never clear or are afraid to make enemies: spineless. As the great actor Paul Newman supposedly once said: “A man with no enemies is a man with no character.”

Now what you are suggesting has nothing to do with your right to disagree regarding gear, you are disagreeing with people being able to say that something sounds better than something else, and this runs completely counter to the one of the pillars of CS / SuperBAF. I want @n3rdling to say that the top-tier stats are the best and better than everything else. I want @Clemmaster or @ohhgourami to say that their modded HE6s are the best. Because if people don't do this, we end up like a mutual adulation society where everything is OK or awesome, and that is not OK.

Those awards look really familiar. I can't really place them, though...

Having an older product win an award is an excellent point. The constant meteoric rise and rapid fall into obscurity of products on other review sites is tiresome. It's that fickle approach that really whips up the "is my gear still good enough?" buying frenzy. Serious reviewers, with all the gear they have access to, should at least have a more balanced, historical perspective and context.

Also, my favourite headphones won a golden-shlong, so I feel validated. Awesome!

Further Jungian influence in this thread: the synchronicity of my Gungnir Multibit arriving the same day that the golden schlong reamed it into fame.

A deserving winner, no doubt. It sounds bloody great.

Great list - I own all three of the winners. Either I make brilliant purchasing decisions, I really drank the sbaf koolaid, or I just buy too much stuff :D
