Probably like most hd800 owner I'm super excited by this one. Even more by the promised better bass extension. Than by a supposed fixed treble. Fixed in my mind would be a tad more upper mids + a tad less low treble. Any loss in resolution would be a neg point though.

I just hope the price will stay ok... 1500€ or 2000$ seems legit considering the package .

Senn should give an option to ship those 800S with one choice of either XLR or SE stock cable rather than including both. Should helps with the pricing considering they sell the cable for $300++ hmm?

"It's (just) a bit better (but now in sexy black)"-(tm).

As has been said, can't wait to see inside the cups. Let's try and reverse engineer the foam dampener if at all possible.

Depends if the S-model sounds better than a modded HD800...

I don't speak the language of this website: http://news.mynavi.jp/articles/2015/10/24/headphonefes_sennheiser/

but Google translate butchers it like so:

just so happens ask to talk to Axel Grell's product manager who had visited Japan, that have been added to the model name in the "S" has two meanings. "One is the" S "of Symmetric, I mean an improvement in the balance connection. Another sports car to represent the Germany's "S" of the Porsche 911 Carrera S ". That in the words, and to refine the balance connection is one of the features of the HD 800, it suggests that intention to give a speedy and sporty image.

    Yep, speedy and sporty.

Sounds just like the various mods then. I'll pass.

If they really improved the headphone, they would've given it a new model number. 595 -> 598, 580 -> 600 -> 650. I guessing they just mechanically damped it a bit but the annoying aspects of the driver and housing will remain annoying.

Reading the announcement it sounded to me they just improved the dampening (don't know how that would effect anything aside from what I have heard through multiple mods already) but definitely like it was stated as a line extension expect the similar treatment that Fostex applied to their mk3 versus the mk2. Same driver just a lot of help from the mod community.

Yeah but the Fostex driver is way less annoying in the first place, technicalities be damned. The HD 800 lacks weight to the sound despite the good bass extension and has the artificial AKGish soundstage and awful resonance. It's like a person who is the best in the world at something but has what Sennheiser would call Backpfeifengesicht

Well, you can still wait for Anax FInal Mod.

There's surely a strong hype on certain websites and it'll make people sell their HD800s in droves. I personally refrain vom buying and selling due to hype, I had my fair shair of NTE and losing money due such idiocy.

If I'd sell my HD 800 for 800€ right now and buy the new one for 1500€ then I'd pay 700€ just for incremental upgrades. I'd rather blow a full 2k on a totally new flagship.

So it has a Helmholtz resonator to absorb specific frequencies, aka 6kHz. The 800S may beat any mods.

I have to admit this is a compelling release. Gave me the old audiophile woodie, yes it did.

So Sennheiser added the "S" to indicate that its new headphone turns all things soft into a strong phallus? Who knew?

    Touché. :)

Gonna have to wait until people with ears I trust hear it and better yet measure it. I don't like aggressive/rough treble and the music I listen to/work with the most (Latin) REALLY doesn't go well with aggressive treble.

Sounds like they were internally R&Ding advanced damping schemes for a while now, if what he is saying is true (that the modding community HD800 damping is child's play relative to what they are able to engineer).

A picture (of HD800S internal damping) will be worth more than a thousand bickering words.
