You almost never hear anyone talk about these. I am very interested in the Audio Zenith PMx2 which is supposed to be phenomenal but there is very little discussion of the stock version.

    Any thoughts?

I was a lucky duck who won a pair at a raffle and use them as a kinda-portable-driver-but-not-really. They're easy to listen to other than a hazy mid-treble or some weird funkiness going on in that region and I can run them relatively well out of my phone. Which means they're great to share with my mates when I'm at the station and they forget their cans at home. But otherwise, my CA Orion occupies 90% of my ear time outdoors.

Also, the stock 4ft cable is way too short for any real outdoor use. But the portable carry-handle case it comes in is really nice and easy to hold. Comfort is decent if you're used to super heavy cans, but ear space is limited due to cup design. I got to demo the pmx2 and it's definitely an upgrade I'm considering in the future.

Meh. OK bass and mids, albeit with little in the way of a sense of power or impact. Treble is simultaneously really dark and really rough due to an overall depression but with a sharp spike somewhere in there.

Distortion in mids mucks things up.

Staging and speed kind of suck.

Stock pads make them sound worse.

Better to just pretend the stock PM-1 and 2 don't exist. Go for the PMx2 if interested.

They are pm-1 for half price.(but with additional demping felt on the back, cheaper pads and plastic enclosure)

I like them. Smooth, not-offensive, really nice all around.

If I ever blew up my HE-6's, I think I might actually consider a PM2 or PMx2. I'd give up the sound quality for something lighter, slimmer/portable, and without the asinine power requirements that necessitate a power amp.

I wish it were that simple. The PM-1 had really good tone. Very smooth and well integrated. The problem is that it had a crappy stage, no air, and sounded dead and dull all over. No dynamics. The PM-2, due to the different damping config and pads, which matter a whole dang lot, pretty noticeably messed up that really good tone overall without improving many of the other things. On the upside, it was cheaper and easier to swallow.

I actually prefer the PM-2. Less stuffy than PM-1.

It's been 2.5 years since launch. I'm surprised that there's not been word of an update to the line. Does anybody buy PM1s anymore?

I'm actually pleased that there has been no updates in 2.5 years. Not because I feel there shouldn't be progress, but because it feels like there is less of a FOTM with Oppo headphones. The PM-3 seems rather popular, perhaps due to price accessibility, and comes in different colors.

I might just save up for Audio Zenith. Sounds like a flagship that is reasonably priced.

Good call. It's not quite as dynamic and lively as some of the best, albeit this can be mostly mitigated with the right amp, but it has by far the most neutral tone I've heard from a headphone. Most other technical aspects are pretty well balanced too. It's a solid choice.

If all the HD6XXs in the world disappeared overnight would you pick the PMX2 price not being a consideration? :D

Or something else like the Utopia?

I would probably do a modded Elear first. Most similar overall tone to the HD650. Utopia is too bright IMO and doesn't respond well to pad "rolling."

PMx2 would be next on the list.

Modded HE400s and maybe an HE-X below that. Possibly highly, highly modded HD800 with a small subset of amps.

Interesting ranking; I'm learning that even with Sonarworks the HD800 'thinness' and bass light nature cannot be cured and my 650's tonality is more pleasant.

Hopefully the Eikon will be good enough to disrupt your ranking.

not that all HD650s have disappeared, but my HE400S with open-grils and FocusA pads may be For Sale soon. ;)
also think we need to get real ears on the HE-X v2 at about half price, not retail.

You need the right amp to give the HD800 that fullness and oomph.

I'm using the Modi Multibit and the balanced out of the Mojo 2, even that didn't do the job for me. Still too thin to my ears. They're going back and I look forward to the Eikon loaner!

Not willing to spend more on an amp for them. I've satisfied my face tweeter curiosity and I guess they're just not for me.

The Modi Multibit will hold you back a tiny bit there, but just a bit. Mjo 2 you would think would give that oomph, but I'll take your word for it. Modded Super 7 can bring them to life, so I think you need very particular tube amps with OPTs.

I like the PM-2 a lot. If I were using open headphones more often, I'd buy these. They're the (much) better HD 600 in my opinion. The sound signature is very similar, but the Oppo extend flat and low down into the sub-bass. Also, these have almost zero distortion so you can equalize them pretty well.

If you have a source with EQ, I'd stuff that 5-6 kHz sink and lift the treble in general and you have a good comfortable and lightweight magnetostatic headphone.

I don't like the PM-1's looks because of the glossy (plastic?) parts. I didn't notice any sound improvement switching from PM2 to PM1.
