I could see there being some terrier in there. Was kinda thinking that myself. He does have a bit of a jack russel build. I was having trouble putting my finger on it. I've seen a few different chihuahua mixes out there but none with quite those features.

It's funny how sometimes a pet finds you for reasons you don't expect, haha. That's how I wound-up with this girl. I went into it looking for a second cat, but took a detour at the dogs and wound up with a large dog instead. And then I find out she has a history with my neighbor nearby and things he missed come back in a sense by me bringing her back.

I know how that goes, too - when me and my ex-fiancee split, I left her with our cats and pit bull. Ugly, difficult situation - I left them with her at what was the absolute darkest point in my life. I'll never forget the position she put me in, nothing about it was fair to me. But her 5 year old son was totally bonded to them - and love coming and going is the sad story of his whole short life. Couldn't live with him losing daddy and his only friends at the same time (wasn't his real dad, just the guy he called that for a couple of years) :/ I had to punch my grownup slip on that one and it suuuuucckked. Could've used the companionship, missed all of them terribly (well, not so much her - but that's its own story.) Things like that count for a lot sometimes. If I ever got to see any of those animals again it would make me so happy.

It's like, anything but the dog, man! And here I've got the dog of someone nearby who's been through a lot of the same life-gutting shit - it's like she brought us together on the other side so we could have this rare solidarity in what we both went through. And then of course she's an especially easy dog. Life is weird like that sometimes. I'm not a fatalist but the connections are striking.

Cats hunting birds is seriously threatening my marriage :(.

At least I rescued one today. A parakeet. It looked to me like it could survive so I got a hold of it. It certainly still had a strong beak! Ouch.

Bird has gone to bird-person neighbour for nursing. Cats and I are in Dog House. Wife wants me to keep cats in a cage: I know that can't be done.

What to do? They certainly get fed enough. I have never had a cat that didn't loose its enthusiasm for hunting before. The fellow in the avatar is not interested, but his wife and daughter are. Daughter is young; wife was a stray. Wife cat is fat, but still kills occasionally. Youngster can't resist.

Quick release bell collar? Bit harder to get close enough without being heard. I think its also the first and last hour of daylight that birds are least active. Thats when I most see them lower and more stationary, so maybe keep them in for peak bird time.

Sorry for your troubles. Im sure theyre trying to help in thier own way! Its just the age old problem. Not to many cats have that skill though! Crazy to have two that can!

I'm guessing that they're not indoor cats, or are they your birds? That's a tough maze to navigate, but keeping them indoors if it's not your birds they're targeting seems to me to be a good option (certainly better than a cage...yikes). The bell collar is a fantastic idea as well.

They are all cats that that have come to the house.

Cat 1 (Avatar) was actually adopted by a previous cat who was not a house cat but lived in a covered area to the side of the house. He was violently and fiercely territorial, but adopted this youngster who was a lost kitten! He is large, lazy and timid. He does not hunt.

Cat 2 was a stray, wandering in our garden. Above cat fell in love and there were kittens. Wife said that we have to adopt the single mother. He came inside/outside after death of step-dad.

Kittens were originally born outside the house. At first, three, but two were lost to street-dog injuries.

Cat 3 (2-yr-old "kitten") is used to being let in and out more or less as she wishes.

Current state of affairs is that wife says let them be shut inside during the day, even though that does mean the dreaded cat latter tray.

Didn't marry previous girlfriend because she pushed my cat off the bed. Don't know how I got into this situation.

Previous feline youngsters living here did not hunt at all.

That is an interesting feline soap opera. I'd say only keeping them inside would prevent the hunting, especially since you already have the litter tray. Of course I'm not for the wanton killing of birds, but it IS what cats do. The bell could work though...
    I wish you good luck!

We don't actually. We have one, somewhere, but it has only been used when cats have been kept in for some reason, or it was put where the kittens were outside the back door but not in the open.

Anyway, marital relations have survived the lockdown reasonably well, but are not too good just now. Even I can say damned cats, though I consider them a sort of ultimate, inescapable responsibility, like children. And I get a lot of pleasure from their company.

I have been known to say that the ideal living unit is one man and his cat(s)

Otis sat like this for a solid 20 minutes while I was eating breakfast this morning. Also, he can't see very well anymore so he never notices the bunnies in the yard, but he can smell them!

Every owner thinks his dog is the best, and they are all correct.

This is my future wife with my akita inu, Kimi.

Also, I'd once again kindly ask to remove my title if it's not too much of a hassle. It's been a long time now, it keeps being a bad memory for me.

I decided I didn’t have the patience for it, but my close friend successfully trained a rescue cat to use the toilet with the CitiKitty.

If you’re really averse to the smell or don’t like clay litter, I’d suggest Feline Pine, which is actually the same as Equine Pine, which can be bought for like $5/40lbs. That combined with a covered litter box can really minimize stank. Also the cheapness of Equine Pine makes it easier, cost-wise, to change the whole box more often.

Not that much. Just lazy, and it seems absurd when there is a garden outside the door!

    Are these kitties both Tonkinese?

My boys are both Tonks, but the chocolate point one, Uppie, looks like dad and the black one, Harvey, looks like mom.

Since others have talked about pets’ relationship to personal stuff, I’ll divulge that my now-wife convinced me to get cats because she’d grown up the daughter of a mother who rescued every cat she found.

By the time I met my wife, I’d become pretty germaphobic due to then-undiagnosed OCD. But I loved my wife more than I’d loved any other woman I’d dated, so we got Uppie. At first I couldn’t deal with the thought of this little creature who would get into everything and rub his shit germs all over me. But he was such a sweet, loving, funny little guy — always demanding pets, talking to me, wanting to cuddle — that it was the first step “exposure” in getting my OCD under control. Therapy, improvement, and another cat followed. (Despite being brothers, they have completely different personalities. Uppie is bold and, while mostly sweet, can be a stinker. Harvey is the most timid, gentle little cat ever.) It’s been five years, and now COVID protocols are annoying, rather than SOP.

While my wife, of course, is the one who really changed my life by convincing me to get Uppie, then to go to therapy, I always tease her and tell her it was Uppie!

Nope, the other baby's a pretty little calico:

And awesome to hear the cats helped! Yeah exposure is hardly an easy process, but it's kinda hard not to fall in love with those fat little fluffnuggets you posted, haha. I think it's grand that you found someone supportive who managed to help you push back against those tendencies, but I think we all know it actually was the cats :p

That girlfriend, a nurse by profession, used to tell me, "Animals spread diseases." I used to reply, "Yes, but not as much as humans do."
That is a wonderful story, @Josh83. Thank you! :D

Mosquitoes are the one creature that I understand serve an important ecological function due to their prominent role in the diets of many other lifeforms, but I nonetheless maintain an advocacy for their complete and total extinction.

Actually, I thought that the considered opinion of even the most diehard ecowarriors was nobody will really miss them.
