I had to say goodbye to my beloved greyhound Blaze, at 11½ years old. He had been diagnosed and treated for bone cancer 2½ years ago, and spent his final years happy and active as a tripod. His cancer finally metastasized, but it was a long remission and the extra time we had together was very special.



I miss him every day but I also feel his presence. We had walked thousands of hours together and now when I'm walking outside I can almost imagine that he is still walking next to me.

Several years ago, a shop called Doob opened here in SF that created figurines from 3D scans of people, pets and other objects. I was fascinated and wanted to do it someday with my dogs.

When Blaze developed a limp at 9 years old, we feared that it might be bone cancer, which is common in greyhounds. This spurred me to order a Doob figurine of me with Blaze. Blaze did have bone cancer in his leg, but we had caught it early and he did very well after amputation and chemotherapy. I never opened the package from Doob, fearing a kind of jinx. Now I have finally opened the package to see my miniature Blaze, and it will be a wonderful memento.

 

always sad when we loose a companion to any disease but glad you got to enjoy a few years and the memories will live on in Doob . We lost our 14 year old Wheaton at the start of COVID and the memories still live on.

Sorry for your loss, @Metro! Blaze was very handsome and obviously well taken care of before and after his medical procedure. I know what you mean about still feeling a pet’s presence after they’re gone. Thanks for sharing!

Cruddy phone pics but we have a new doggo (taking this fluffy bugger in as well as his mum, who's a stray that's been going by the house for a few months now but was never formally adopted). People are weird, apparently he's the only one left un-adopted from a litter of six because he was the ugliest one????????????
