I'm sad to report that Otis is no longer with us. He was our baby and one of the family so we are taking it pretty hard, but he had 14 & 1/2 great years. He had arthritis in his spine and he was having trouble standing. He also lost 6 lbs in as many weeks. We took him to the vet on Monday and he passed in my arms with my wife standing by.

@LetMeBeFrank : losing a cherished member of the family is never easy. It is clear you gave him a good home. May good memories remain in your heart forever.

@LetMeBeFrank , very sorry to hear that. Many of us have been there as well.

We're all privileged when we can share the lives of pets who love us back. Try to take comfort from the time & love you and your family got to experience with Otis.

@LetMeBeFrank, sorry for your loss. Take comfort in knowing that you gave Otis a good life.

I posted recently about losing my greyhound Blaze. An option we used this time was in-home euthanasia. A vet comes and performs the service at your home. It is so much a better and peaceful experience for everybody (especially your pet) than at a sterile vet clinic. Blaze passed away peacefully on his favorite bed at home. Afterwards they can also handle taking your pet away for cremation or other afterlife services. I think the practice has become popular only recently, in the last 5 years or so. Google "in-home pet euthanasia" for local providers.

They weren't able to come to our house due to COVID restrictions, but they did give us some pills to keep him calm before we took him in and they had a nice blanket laid out for him and he knows everyone there so it wasn't scary. I was able to lay with him in my arms as they gave him the shot and then the IV.

Sorry to hear that, @LetMeBeFrank, especially this week. Hope that you and your family are able to feel gratitude for your time with Otis instead of feelings of loss as you celebrate Thanksgiving this week.

14 1/2 years is a great age and relieving his suffering is probably the best thing, no matter how hard it is. There is no easy way to say goodbye to the ones we love.

When he turned 14, my wife and I joked that he had been a "senior" dog for half his life, as we started feeding him senior dog food when he was 7.

It gets less difficult each day. We packed up all of his stuff that we can donate and tossed the rest, minus sentimental stuff like all of his collars and tags. We put up some more pictures of him and we've been reminiscing about the good times with minor tears instead of sobbing.

All of the support and kind words from family and friends (including you all) help make it easier as well.

    Thanks to all of you.

This is Dr. Emmett, our grand old man still acting like a teenage fruitcake. He enjoys sitting in high places.

After setting up a ladder for some household maintenance I turned around to find him climbing the ladder without hesitation. Upon completion of maintenance I affixed a long board between the ladder and his tower much to his delight. As you can see he is fearless.

Our younger cat Thomas has four modes of operation. Sleep, hunt, eat and eliminate (litter box) He often will lay at my feet when I am sitting at my lab bench. Thomas has brought me many tokens of appreciation such as live birds, rabbits, rodents. After thanking him he usually devours these tokens, outside of course.

    Both cats are rescues.

Dr. Emmett had been hit by a car and taken to a local Emergency Veterinary Clinic over a decade ago. When the owners gave him up for euthanization due to the expense to save him, one of the vets who knew us well asked if we would pay hard expenses and they would donate their labor. We had just lost a cat quite similar to Dr. Emmett, to heart disease, so we were well known at this EVC. Emmett required considerable surgery for many significant injuries but all the vets saw something in him. He has fit into our family quite well after recovery for 11 years now.

Thomas spent approximately one year living on his own in the greater neighborhood. We would see him huddle up against a tree trunk in the snow during winter. One day he sat at our front door seeking refuge from the inclement weather. Thomas has been with us since. He prefers sleeping in the garage on top of my car.

My cat Tiger that I grew up with as a kid many decades ago was the consummate hunter, probably single handedly decimating the neighborhood wildlife. All as gifts for me of course, but I just let her eat the spoils. About a decade ago I decided a tribute seemed like a good idea, and here is the result.

Here's Bentely, my 11-year-old Cocker. We adopted him when he was 3 from a family that could no longer take care of him.

He was diagnosed with cancer last year but has been happy and healthier than ever so far.

He still acts like the silly puppy he has always been. Fingers crossed he has more enjoyable pain-free years ahead of him!

I suspected I would be a cat person, but we wound up with a rabbit.

Regrettably, this picture may make some of your pets (and @zerodeefex) rather hungry:

He just turned 1 earlier this year:

We're enamored enough to be looking to add a bunny partner for him to our family.

Does your mum still have that rabbit?"

When I was a child, I would sometimes get this question from strangers! My mum had got quite famous for being the lady who took a rabbit shopping. The rabbit didn't mind, and neither did anyone else. He was Dutch (black and white) and not our only rabbit, but the only one to have a harness and lead and go on travels with mum. Hmmm... must be sixty years ago now.

    Lovely animals. Affectionate and intelligent.

Sybil is a big fan of the Final A3000. But she thinks they are a bit too mellow sounding with the Sony NW-A55...and gives me "the eye".
