There are only two remaining greyhound racetracks in the US, which are in West Virginia and operated by casinos. Casinos in West Virginia are required to operate either a horse or dog racetrack. Both horse and greyhound racing have been in steady decline nationwide for decades, from expanded options for gambling such as lotteries, Indian casinos, fantasy sports, and online gambling.

My wife and I have had two retired racing greyhounds, one that raced in Arizona and the other in Florida.

We currently have two greyhounds. We got Cosmo at 1½ years old (now 4 y/o) from a greyhound rescue group. They acquired him from an SPCA shelter in central California, where the original owner (a breeder) had surrendered him. Cosmo is very clingy and insecure. Our theory is that he was bred for racing, but with race tracks closed he had nowhere to go and was very neglected as a puppy.

This year we adopted a greyhound puppy, which was a rare opportunity because greyhounds are usually already adults before they become household pets (e.g. after racing). Her mother had been picked up in Southern California as a stray wandering around with no ID (perhaps escaped from a breeder), and ended up with my local greyhound rescue group. Then they discovered that she was pregnant! She gave birth to 7 puppies + 2 stillborn. We acquired Xena (named after Xena Warrior Princess) at 2 months old, and last week she turned 1 year old.

This was her growth from February to August this year (2 months old to 6 months old).

Awesome! I know several folks who have adopted retired or neglected greyhounds, and they have all just been fantastic doggos. The way they are treated in the racing industry is absolutely abhorrent, and I'm absolutely thrilled when any ban is implemented.

    Treasure every day with them....
Yes, he's quite "the character". He's also very smart.

This is my girl-cat, Aga (named after Polish female tennis player, Agnieska "Aga" Radwanska), who I also adopted from the Dublin SPCA on the same day. She's very sweet and affectionate, particularly with Dad. She and Ringo knew each other because they were in the same room together at Dublin SPCA as kittens.

She's most the wonderful cat...I love her more than I can say.

Mine does the very same thing on my Yggdrasil, and will go to sleep on it! I know it's warm, but doesn't look very comfy to me...

Ok I take it back: he’s on the naughty list after knocking down my beloved Caldera Closed!

I can’t stay mad at him more than a few hours, though…

We lost Jackie on Saturday... my family is crushed. Not my first rodeo having a dog pass, but damn does it sting. She was 9 years old.

I'm so sorry to hear this, it's so much harder when they pass before their time. Over the rainbow bridge, Jackie, you are loved!

This is Frank. He lives up the road and to my knowledge has never been walked. He lives in a yard and garage and is apparently not allowed in his house. His family went away and left my friends their keys. I’ve been walking Frank. The first time we left the house, he peed himself with excitement and did zoomies in a little circle. He is scared of any dogs regardless of how small they are and doesn’t even know how to cock his leg - he crouches like a puppy. His family has 3 teenagers; how would you not look after such a good boy?? He is a very sweet dog and an absolute joy to walk. I am just going to tell them when they get back, I am happy to take him twice a day. My ones already love him.

I'm so sorry, it's awful when you lose furry family members.

Thanks for looking after him. Some people shouldn't be allowed to have pets. There ought to be pet licenses.

i am SO very sorry for your loss. The loss of my beloved cats have been the most difficult of my life, even more than when my parents passed. One of the hardest lessons I've learned from life is that, ultimately, there is no loving without loss. As such, it's important to treasure every day with your loved ones, and make every day...COUNT. The way I try to find some solace during this time is to remember the days you treasured with them.

He's adorable! I can safely say that I never imagined I would listen to a lossless file of a cat snoring, but I am very glad I got to. Much more air than the lossy version, I assume.
