    Thinking about adding a Hauppauge tuner of some sort to a spare pc and recording OTA shows to be viewed later.

    Anyone have first hand experience with any of the recommended tuners, like the Hauppauge sticks? Can you set things up to record on a schedule so you do not have to be there? I suppose you can otherwise it would be really lame, huh?

    Also wondering how good these pc tuners are, my low end Samsung 720p plasma works but sometimes being on the fringe can cause signal drop when bad weather is over the towers about 35 miles away.

    Bigger antenna, keep your coax runs short and replacing old coax can all help with signal strength. Also you might consider a signal booster, as you'll be splitting between your PC and plasma, which would otherwise make things worse.

    Mounting an antenna on the roof and using a signal booster is normally a must if you want consistent reception.

    Good tips, but rental so no new antenna or holes in the wall etc., Mohu Leaf does well about 90% of time, short 10 foot coax run, more interested in how these stick tuners perform.

    I have 2 Intel CAYH Nucs with Hauppage 955q tuners. Both are hooked up to inside Eclipse antennas. On these I run KODI with LibreElec using TVHeadend for live and dvr duty.

    My Plex box is an Nvidia Shield 2017 16gb. On this box I have the Hauppage Dual Wintv. This box also utilizes an inside Eclipse. Recording and reception is pretty good after a boatload of learning.
    This feeds into a creaky 720p tv. But of course also makes available live tv to all household devices including my desktop.

    All of the above work pretty well. One of the KODI boxes is running KODI Alpha 18.x with LibreElec Alpha 9.x. Reason for this is the kernel is 4.17.x which includes the drivers Hauppage themselves provided to the kernel team. I just finished redoing this box for this reason and the ability to stream Netflix and Amazon Prime video.

    I can't stress how important antenna placement is if your are going indoors. An inch can be a meaningful distance for my boxes. In my area transmitters are from 2-50 miles.

    Happy to answer any questions you might have.
    Hope this helps.

    @jomamasan

    wow talk about crazy timing. I am actually watching a youtube vid from Peter Carcione about Kodi and Home Run Box. I will be pulling out the ladder and try to reposition the Leaf high up on my 12 foot indoor wall to see if things improve a bit. It is due south facing and need to be about 10 more degrees to the west.

    Lots to digest, I do run plex on my other computer but just for some movies, I stream to the Roku box to watch.

    I am sure I will have questions over time and appreciate the offer to pose them via PM.

    Thanks!
