    Thank you.

Never understood why RGB got big 10ish years ago. I figured if anything it was only to make your computer subtly glow one color... not turn into rainbow light display.

Dude, you're blind to the truth....and that is, RGB improves speed of GPU and CPU....and RAM. It also helps with improving one's health and longevity....these are scientific facts!!! ;):p:D

It started out with Corsair making an RGB mechanical keyboard. Which I will admit I did buy but returned after it was too glitchy. Then when other companies realized in raw material costs, RGB isn't really too expensive to implement RGB was added to everything. Nowadays PC components have this RGB unicorn vomit everywhere. Thankfully with the RGB software you can turn it off or at least set it to match the aesthetics.
Have happened to the simple days where you would go red LEDs to gain performance. And then blue LEDs to get better cooling. Or the greens to save power. Simple LEDs for simple times.

No excuse for rainbow vomit these days. I see that and I assume you also dont bother to actually configure your rig and probably run generic windows graphics drivers

Otherwise I like rgb. Done right it can look really nice and eye catching. Just not on literally everything, and not blaringly bright. My brain starts to feel like it cant figure out what to look at.

But I think youre only half right about the OG red leds. Everybody knows you need cathode tubes. Even triple xfire/sli is shit without the cathode tube boost.

    Corsair's K70 debuted at CES 2014.

Roccat had configurable RGB in their Kone mouse in 2009.
It used clear tubes as diffusers so the colours would blend from front to back.

I had one in 2010. It was mostly made fun of back then. No one could see the point of RGB yet.

    Gotten 4 so far.

First was a MSI Trio X, Adorama the night the 3080 launch listed the Trio X for like $40 over MSRP. In the morning it became obvious it was a backorder.

Second, I got the FE in a Best Buy drop in late October. One of the Discord servers pinged me that Best Buy was dropping and I got one. The Trio X I planned to cancel but I wanted to really make sure the FE shipped before cancelling since Adorama support said they had no idea when it would ship. The Trio X shipped the next day.

In late November, Newegg tweeted that they were dropping a combo for 3080. I hit F5 right as they dropped and snagged an Aorus Master 3080.

Latest one was the MSI Suprim X I wanted for the quiet bios setting. Newegg listed it in their combos last week. I added it to my wishlist. They tweeted out that they were doing another combo drop. When the drop happened, I refreshed my wishlist, added the Suprim X to my cart. Checked out.

The extra 3080 I gotten I sold to friends at cost since I hate the scalping happening and friends have been wanting to build/upgrade their systems.

If you are looking to get a 3080 legit without botting, there are Discord servers dedicated to helping people snag cards. There are also b2b sites like shopblt and provantage that take orders and just take forever to ship out cards. OG10kTech has backorders and sells cards at MSRP. Blackoutpcparts has cards 10% over MSRP and takes backorders.
Seems like the craze started after the Corsair K70 RGB and now RGB is in everything.

Upgraded my GPU, swapped out the Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6800 for a Nitro+ RX 6900 XT, gotta have the best from AMD! The cards, in the foreground is the RX 6800, don't let the pic fool ya, they're exactly the same size and thickness.

Queued and waiting for an EVGA Nvidia 3060Ti OC'd FTW, whenever that day comes. It seems that the queue has been stuck on the first hour after its announcement. Whatever, I needed my desktop for work anyways. This is my first desktop in years, as I've been mostly a laptop guy in between. Case pictured is a Fractal Define R5. Unfortunately, I belatedly found out about its infamous rattling issue with HDD's (HDD cage either rattles or transmits rattling to the underside removable dust screen) despite using the rubber grommets to set them in their respective slides. The caddy (roller) that I'm using kind of applies enough underside pressure to the chassis to absorb the vibration and prevent rattling as heard here:

As for the missing GPU, I recently set up a Distill product tracker for BB, but if anyone knows any Discord GPU tracking servers, please PM me. Thnx.

Just ordered all the stuff for my first build in like 12 years. I don't game, but I want to see what's up with the newer tech today. Goal is a blazing fast work machine for OBS/Teams/Zoom MC'ing, and personally probably mess about with HQPlayer since I'll some CPU to go around. But basically as close to silent fast work and home machine that has all the knobs.

We can't be too choosy down here, but it's a Fractal Define 7, i7 10700K, 280AIO, 32GB Trident 3200, 2x 1tb 970 EVO and an Asus Z490 board powered by a Fractal ION+ 660. Hoping I can have this run pretty dead silent for work stuff and then open the chokey front door if I want to crank it.

Guy at the vendor wondering WTF there's no GPU on this order .

How are your temps and sound levels? I'd love an SFF again, but thought I'd have to either sacrifice power or low noise.

You will sacrifice noise. You just don't have the surface area for a huge AF air cooler + multiple giant, low RPM fans that are necessary to run a TOTL rig quietly.

    Powerful
    Small Size
    Low Noise

    pick 2

Edit: that being said - I don't ever notice with the RAALs on.

Definitely. It looks like the Ncase M1 was right about optimal for size with performance and noise considerations and everything that's been smaller is compromised in some way. The FormD T1 is allegedly somewhat viable, but surely more thermally constrained.

The temperatures are okay at 78'C for the GPU and 82'C for the CPU, but the noise is something I consider beyond acceptable for most users. I likely have some optimizations to do regarding the GPU fan curve (likely adjusting to 85'C temperature target), bottom intake fans (switching both to exhaust and adjusting the curves) and using the Curve Optimizer in PBO to fine-tune the 5900X voltages and frequencies.

My goal will be to keep the 5900X below 85'C at 1850RPM/100% on the NF-A12x15 at 4700MHz, with all other fans indexed to that noise level to not be perceptibly louder. It'll still be considerably louder than my NCase M1 was with a H100i in a HEDT setup.

pretty much this. After many struggles with different build i early realized that this wouldn't be a fight i would win, we all dream and usually fail.
You can compromise with a custom build itx/atx psu mis though, that makes a ton of difference in noise. I have a Modivo (which is completely 3D printed) to my needs and use a SFX-L. It's not perfect but much better than my previous corsair SF600.

I mean, PSU noise is not the big issue. Trying to dissipate head from an overclocked 3080/3090 GPU + overclocked Zen 3 while being silent is difficult without LARGE f'ing surface area or a loop with noise concerns of it's own.

I gotta say my new build in the NR200 doesn't feel like it sacrifices anything comparatively. It (5800X w/NH-C14S + 2080 Super in negative pressure setup) actually runs cooler and quieter than my previous system (3700X w/NH-D15 + 2080 Super in an Evolv X case with 3x stock Phanteks fans in a Positive pressure system) though I'm sure a fair amount of that can be attributed to the superb A12x25 fans I have as both CPU intakes and top exhausts.

Not only that but the NR200 is sitting on my desk right next to me while the old system was tucked away under my desk and the table top obstructed some of the noise from coming my way.

Oh that's more of a high end system then mine.

I focused on the PSU because, in my case, was definitely the noise maker BUT because i already undervolted my system, which contributed both for temps as well as noise.

Getting back to my PSU, I made a fan transplant and it got fixed. I dislike Noctua's (traditional) colors but they do make quality fans (and there's the black ones nowadays). I usually go for Bequiet's since i prefered them but for my PSU i needed a slim version (or make the PSU's chassis taller) so i just went with a slim noctua in (unfortunately that's the one they had at the time) ice cream color.

I managed to get an RTX 3090 FE in a Best Buy drop last week. What a huge, pretty card... but oh my gosh the coil whine.

I can undervolt it to 800mV to basically get rid of it, but then I'm sacrificing a lot of performance to achieve the quiet.

I decided to try internet wisdom out by getting another power supply (swapping a Seasonic Prime PX-750 for a Phanteks Revolt X 1000W, which is also made by Seasonic) and and pure sine wave UPS (CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD).

I also ran it in at various voltage and power limits pretty hard for a few hours.

    No dice. Same coil whine.

I put my RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra back in while I weigh my options. The 3090 is useful to me for game development, but I barely have time or energy for side projects these days and I can't use it in my work computer anyway.

If NVIDIA isn't willing to RMA it for this loud ass whine (clearly audible from a good 10 feet away) it's either going to someone local who is willing to tolerate it or back to Best Buy.
