I heard (on NPR?) an archivist saying that many of today's photos are just 'lost' to the digital void and it's best to have the ones you like printed. Even the shots in your mobile, they're not often looked if ever again if that gets lost or upgraded.

Anyway, anybody has suggestions for backing up? Printing them? RAID NAS? Cloud backup?

I keep a dropbox copy of all my photos, plus a copy on an external NAS, as well as in my computer and in my home server. I print cherry picked and edited ones.

A favorite from my early days. Archaic at this point Pentax K10D, with the other worldly Voigtländer 125mm f/2.5 apo-lanthar shooting thru a very old Pentax 1.7x TC that has a focus element giving auto focus to manual focus lenses.

Mrs. M8o , w/a friend's dog (we're all about the dogs). Again, the Voigtländer, but no AF TC.

    Two I took tonight:

The top picture I took after a few pictures trying to get the beer and headphones equally focused as important to show two of my favorite hobbies. It was then I figured that I needed to give my tripod a try and see how I could change the photo's perspective from far away. I was able to get the headphones to balance on the beer bottle with no stability issues so I lowered my ISO to 100 and set up a 3 second exposure. I used a 2 second timer to auto snap the photo after I let go of the camera.

I like how they both came out!

The problem with printed photo is difficult to copy without losing quality.
Cloud backup is fine with phones especially with the unlimited storage from Google. With DSLR of course you will need NAS for that. If you really shoot a lot a dedicated NAS makes sense, otherwise you can store your photos with music/movies. You can also configure RAID 1 in NAS for better safety.
Lightroom can manage the files for you, it can automatically import your photos to designated drive from camera, but the database corrupts easily for me.
Sorry for this OT, back to pics.

    Merry Christmas!

There are probably other Guru's on the forum that can give a more comprehensive run-down of the techniques. For myself, there are 4 simple steps:
    1. Content/story - it always start with a subject, a story or something that catch the attention.
    2. Lighting - this adds drama to the photos. But there isn't really any particular rules to what kind of light to apply. Make good use of back light, front light, side light, top light to enhance what you like to present. At times, back light is used to enhance 3D-ness, but sometimes if a compressed effect is desired, then front light could be better. For landscape photography, it's generally better to shoot in early morning or in the evening, because there's more drama during these times, but sometimes an over-cast sky is dramatic too, so it really depends on the mood you want to present.
    3. Harmony - Firstly, harmony in composition. As a general rules, try to balance the subjects in a harmony way. But sometimes a skewed composition can enhance the visual effect. Secondly, harmony in subject types, try to keep subjects in the photos which relates to each other or the story. Thirdly, harmony in color, the color of a subject in the background for example, can either enhance or distract the main subject or doesn't fit the whole scene, try to avoid if possible.
    4. Execution - As a general rule, try to be strict before pressing the shutter button, this takes patience. Ask yourself whether this picture is good enough, is it better if i move closer? is it better if I wait for the subject in the background to move away? And then, try to capture at the Defining Moment like what Henri Cartier-Bresson did.

With practice, these come naturally. Hope that helps.

Darkfield 2000x... roughly the maximum magnification you can obtain optically because the wavelength of light isn't small enough
edit: I took the picture, but it wasn't my camera

This is a super duper closeup view of a drop of nickel superalloy that splashed (and subsequently supercooled) onto another nickel based substrate. The lines you see are sorta kinda steps in the crystal structure of the metal. They aren't actual atomic steps, more like a grouping of layers of atoms where each ones represents a defect that arises from residual stresses due to the supercooling.

Think of it like pages in a book, and the residual stresses are trying to slide the pages laterally to make a slope instead of a vertical edge. The spine is resisting, but above a certain point the spine breaks and instead of a smooth slope you have a jagged step. Apply more stresses and each step can break down further. The lines above are the big steps; there are roughly 5-10 small steps between each one.

Now do all that during a liquid to solid transition that happens at 10^6 K/s
