Baroness have had a tendency to try and be original with their productions from the start. Nothing wrong with that per se, but I too think with Purple and the latest they went way overboard with the distortion. Esp drums sound totally crushed and tinny when lots of tracks are going on - their drummer's great work is pretty much useless at that point.

This really puzzles me too, since they've been so good about making dynamic compositions and interesting sounds. Are they trying to hide their more melodic tunes of late under a wall of noise? Can't really think of a anything else. Purple was such a high point for the band song-writing wise that is this has really pissed me off for a long time.

Btw, they've used the same producer for the last two. I bet they went looking for this sound, since that guy is known for these distorted mixes. It's all a real damn shame.

It’s stoner rock dude. It’s for people who are high as shit and not paying attention.

LMAO you realize half the rock gods you idolize were high or drunk or both when writing and performing most of their songs right?

Completely agree on the Purple album; the songwriting was so tight and integrated the shifts from Gold & Green so well into the prior sound that the mix bummed me out that much more, also given the treatment of prior releases.

Sort of thought about this video I saw where a dude replaced all of the snare hits in Master of Puppets with one from Saint Anger to hilarious/detrimental effect. Wonder if anyone will do something similar for these mixes, but in reverse. Ah well.

they were making music for everyone, not just for stoners and fat balding hipsters with awful neon tattoos. This isn’t Sabbath or Cathedral or the Black Crowes or wearing pants with weed leaves on them music. This is fat stoner ipa festival music for pretentious assholes who want to think different and would hate on slick 80s Sabbath while listening to this garbage. The dudes who go this whiny sensitive shitshows thinks it’s better than Dio and Megadeth and need to be shown the bridge.

funny story, I went to see a controversial old punk band with members who look like ex cons once. Opening for them was boring hipper band with colorful pretentious puke album covers and whiny sensitive lyrics. All these idiots with Hitler youth hair cuts, bald hipsters with beards and chest hair, and women who never use conditioner left because “I’m just here to see X man. Y’s racist/sexist/ablelist!” And the guitarist of the lamo band turned out to be a rapist.

Same thing happened again with another controversial but good band. only the lamo opener younger band had a pedo this time! These idiots just want to be cool and fit in. They don’t want a bunch of long hairs or hardcore dudes with buzzcuts, muscles, and black flag tattoos to kill their vibe as f**k it those guys and their music aren’t kosher for making the bar a safe place to stand around and act bored in. These people would never go see Megadeth, Motörhead, or even something mainstream like The Rolling Stones at a larger venue because they like the music. guys who look like aging poodles make music that can’t be chilled out to while you sip a mango peach latte ipa and talk about how awesome it is that the brewery builds playground equipment out of recycled cans.

Holy shit, this really went places!

Reminds me of the time I asked my coworker about a recent purchase and it ended with him telling me about his nephew's botched circumcision or something. Incredible.

Anyway, Baroness/Hipster/Rapist/Parent(?)/Girly Drink parallels in place (of course), my question has been fully addressed, and I've been roasted so hard that I can't update my avatar.

    Back to music ...

Find some shitty amp and deck the gain so it’s lke a hissy practice amp on steroids. Or do it with some shitty interface pre or plugin that sounds fine at -3db but shits the bed when it hits -1 dB. Clip everything. Use that grainy ass lofi crap setup on everything. Don’t use tape plugins or anything like that to calm it down. Sell it as “noise influences”.

I just got this sweet re-press at my local record store. Owner was playing it when I walked in and I had to get it.

    Abwarts - Amok

They're a German band. I believe a US record store got the rights and repressed it. It a well made LP and the band rocks.

Revisiting some mid-aughts melodic hardcore. That Within Blood Ill Tempered by Shai Hulud is one of the finer examples, and this track really stands out on that record:
