I would say the first big gaming revolution started with the SNES. So many classics such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Secret of Mana, Link to the Past. However, in my opinion PSX was the golden age. You had FF7, FF9, Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry, Vagrant Story, GTA, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil.

What Nintendo started I feel Sony continued and pushed it even farther.

Greatest of All Time, Super Mario Brothers... end of story.

Walking, jogging, running, and sliding depending on how fast Mario was moving. Jumps of variable heights and distances, controlled by how hard you pressed the button. Revolutionized the way a character of a platform game was controlled by the player.

Arthur from the Ghost n' Goblins/Ghouls n' Ghost's franchise was another of my faves, and I use him as my avatar from the Sony PSP Ultimate Ghost n' Goblins game.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land was one of the first Action/RPG games of the day. I still play it occasionally on MAME (maybe once or twice a year...lol).

I was an 80's kid, and it will always be the "Golden Age" of gaming for me.

Tak, surprised you don't have a hacked N3DS or a GCW Zero.

PSX for me. It was really the golden age of RPGs, and the PSX was also my first console.

SNES/Sega Genesis (+CD/32x) era here. RPGs during that period significantly advanced the narrative capabilities of the medium. "Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Secret of Mana, Link to the Past", and add to that Lunar/Lunar 2, Phantasy Star IV, Super Mario RPG, the Breath of Fire Series (FISHING), Secret of Evermore, Lufia, Vay, Popful Mail (every Working Designs Game, really), Shining Force I & II, and Beyond Oasis.

If you look at the delta between Dragon Warrior 4 on NES and FF5 (let alone FF6), the complexity of the story is streets ahead. If you look at the delta between Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy Tactics, you see large improvements - but mostly iterative graphic and mechanics improvements.

That being said, PSX era improved on the overall gaming experience by taking these improved narrative possibilities and combining it with better hardware and a fuckton more resources.

I am just going to say this I listed Chrono Trigger on my list of classics but I honestly think it is the most overrated RPG. SNES and PSX both brought a golden age to JRPGs but we can't ignore what Sony brought us with the PSX. Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, also revitalized the Castlevania series.

The rebirth of Castlevannia is huge for me, but I still went with the 16-bit era. The SNES holds a special place in my heart. Also Kefka, never forget Kefka.

Why am I so happy when I cast my vote on 16-bit goodness... :p
Just by reading the word SNES brings back sooo many happy memories. I have failed to move on...

*okay Guild Wars 2 and Guns of Icarus are nice though, so does LotRO and FFXIV, but still a couple of modern games compared to so many childhood sweethearts and gripping, engaging stories from SNES RPG games...

I'm most partial to 5th gen. I had played a bit of SNES/N64 from family members and friends, but the PS2 was the console that got me hooked on games. Devil May Cry, Xenosaga, FFX, Okami, Viewitful Joe and RE4. It was a good time.

No need. I have two hacked PSPs (1001 and 3001) and an Open Pandora. Used to have a Dingoo A320 too.

Don't have the money for a N3DS yet. Not sure I want to sell off my Ambassador 3DS.

Have my fondest memories of Nintendo's 8-bit consoles, but have to admit 16-bit was a pretty big step up.

I'm more interested in the content of games than the specifics of consoles, really. Best period for games, you ask? Tossup, I think, between the 4th and 5th gen's libraries. You didn't have the game equivalent of blockbusters crowding everything out back then, and the quirkiest Japanese games dominated storytelling in ways that I miss (what was the name of the game in which the protagonist was a severed head?). Games like Nocturne, Ico, Parasite Eve, SH 2, Rule of Rose, Eternal Darkness, Siren and Fatal Frame II likely never would get made now. The Demon's Souls franchise is the closest thing left, since far less gets localized Stateside. Those periods were milestones in the development of games as immersive narrative art. They were for games what the '70s were for film. Point of correlation: The influence of Dario Argento's Phenomena (1985) on the original Clock Tower game (1995) for the Super Famicon.

A healthy diversity of consoles seemed to be at its height just before the PS2. Really loved the Dreamcast.

When I was born NES was the system of choice. I remember playing Tetris and The Legend of Zelda at the age of 3-5, Super Mario Brothers as well. They were the building blocks for my journey and I respect them so much even if I have a hard time playing some NES games now.

I had a Sega Genesis and loved Altered Beast, Mortal Kombat and this game where you are a bee in a side scroller shooting game. Sonic was a cornerstone for me at this point. Loved them.

Eventually got an SNES and man it just had so much more to offer than Sega. Many RPGs (not that I played any of them at the time), more crisp graphics, I loved everything about it. Super Mario World is one of my favorite games to this date. I loved everything about that system and played Ken Griffey Baseball so much.

I moved on to a PSX and Dreamcast, man both of those systems were something. PSX introduced me to RPGs, Final Fantasy 8 was the first and it holds a huge spot in my heart. I absolutely loved those blocky graphics and everything about the system. Dreamcast still has one of my favorite football games, the 2k. Crazy Taxi was sick too!

PS2 was my sweet spot though. Kingdom Hearts and FFX, boy those two games were something weren't they? This era was my golden gaming time. Gamecube included. This was my favorite era, probably because I was 16 and it was the last I really had the time to play games all day and the first time I fully understood the things I was experiencing.

I think that NES/PSX eras aged the worst. SNES and PS2 I can still put a lot of time into without feeling like it's dragging. I never got into PS3 or anything past that, I really need to play those games though

Well I am sure that this wont be as retro as some people, but some of my most fond memories for video games were when I was a bit younger was playing Golden Eye on N64. Had so many fun hours spent playing that with friends! Then from there it went to Halo, and Diablo 2. Spent a lot of hours with friends playing D2, and some awesome nights having LAN parties playing Halo. Have some good memories playing the original modern warfare too. I have played lots of games before and after but the one that have stuck in my mind the most have been the ones what I played most with friends.

Most of my gaming these days is done on PC. After you have seen the graphics on PC compared to console there is no looking back! Mostly just been playing some BF4, Battlefront, and even gone back to playing a bit of Diablo 3 lately. Very excited for Overwatch though!

I love co-op, so 16-bit was the era for me. Spending hours with a friend on Toejam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron, Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes...those were the days. It's also the time when I got my hands on Street Fighter! SF2:CE on Mega Drive, with a joystick = bliss. Learning how to shoryuken was a rite of passage.

Diablo 3 is an easy pick for hour-murdering with my grillfiend: she loves it when her character gets sprayed with gold (that sounds a little different from the way I intended it).

I can't really think of another RPG that lets you level up in fast-motion and do anything you like. It doesn't even limit your storage as of late last year, which was one of the only irritating things about that game.

D3 isn't bad, but to me D2 is still the better game. I ended up countless hours in D2, but D3 didn't make me feel the same way, I didn't get nearly as hooked on it. Still overall a great game though, blizzard almost always comes out with a well polished game from the start.
