I made a mix out of songs I like that weren’t part of albums I particularly like. Today seems like a good time to share it.

This one is for @loadexfa to have fun with his new sub and piss off the neighbors.

    Russian Circles - Blood Year

A beautiful cross between progressive rock and metal. All instrumental. This album is a unique sound to their others with a lot of loudly recorded deep hitting bass drum hits thst are pretty constant through the album. It’s kind of a pummeling listen but in a very good way.

This album is so good. I thought I would add links to various streaming services to make it easier to check it out.

    Beach Comber - Parting Cuts

Pretty unique album. Folk rock. It has a definite Sufjan Stevens (Michigan and Illinois albums) feel in its layering of instruments and sounds but it has a sound all of its own as well. Fans of these two albums should definitely check this out.

interestingly the album despite how great it is, was never meant fo be released but was a private project.

    From the Bandcamp page:

“Things happen in a weird way sometimes. This record was never meant to be heard by a lot of people, but now seemed like a good time to put it out there.

Recorded a few years ago in the upstairs of a little farm house near the beach on the North coast of Antrim. Its was made for two very special people in my life.
It documents their beautiful but heart breaking year travelling the world together and it was a gift to them on their wedding day.

Its a collection of songs about people, for people and it seemed like now, more than ever, was a good time to celebrate those ideas.

    I hope you enjoy them.

Like many of us this is a really rough patch we're going though, without being able to play shows purchasing my music is a way you can support me and other musicians out there. You can download it for free if you’re in a tight spot yourself, but on the other hand if you can afford it, just know that it means the world to me at this time. “

I listened to A Winged Victory for the Sullen the other day first thing in the morning. Loved it! So....

A Winged Victory for the Sullen - The Undivided Five

beautiful music verging on ambient but it’s not nearly as sparse as a lot of ambient music. Lots going on. Mostly stringed instruments but other instruments as well. Ebbs and flows with a natural feeling rhythm similar to Stars of the Lif (posted above) but AWVFTS has more layers and is faster paced. I think ultimately Stars of the Lid has a more profound impact on me but that doesn’t take anything away from AWVFTS. Beautiful, calming music.

    Chaino - Various Albums

master bongo percussionist. I can’t find the album I have by him anywhere. It’s the best. He adds recordings of whips and women orgasming and jungle field recordings over his awesome bongo rhythms with haunting backup music. It’s honestly not that kosher if he wasn’t the real deal it would be super racist and derivative. It’s like music that might be used in one of the original Indiana Jones movies. I would never play it with my parents around. But it’s super awesome.

here’s a few albums I could find which are still good but don’t have that crazy factor.

    Jungle Mating Rhythms

Jungle Echoes (this has a bit of what I was talking about and the closest to my album but still not as good)

    Night of the Spectre

This is the only album available on streaming services. Still very good! Don’t expect great recording quality it was recorded in 1960-ish likely not in a studio

    Vic Chesnutt - Ghetto Bells

A brilliant, extremely versatile and creative folk/Americana-ish musician who often collaborated with backup bands to make very different albums. He made Ghetto Bells with Bill Frisell on guitar among others. The Salesman and Bernadette was made with Lambchop as the backup band. His final 2 albums were made with A Silver Mt Zion. The willingness of so many great musicians to play backup for him speaks to his talent as a musician and the respect that the musical community had for him.

He was tragically involved in a car accident that left him partially paralyzed with limited use of his hands. I saw him play live mostly just him on stage alone with a guitar and it was incredible how he was still able to make brilliant music sitting in a wheelchair with hands that didn’t work normally. It obviously disturbed him greatly. In 2009 he died from an overdose of muscle relaxants.

    from Wikipedia:

“His musical style has been described by Bryan Carroll of allmusic.com as a "skewed, refracted version of Americana that is haunting, funny, poignant, and occasionally mystical, usually all at once".”

“The 2005 album Ghetto Bells featured famed guitarist Bill Frisell, whom Chesnutt met in 2004 at the Century of Song concert series at the German festival Ruhrtriennale. Ghetto Bells also featured lyricist and composer Van Dyke Parks on accordion and keyboards. Chesnutt's wife, Tina, would frequently play bass on his albums, including Ghetto Bells. His niece, and fellow songwriter, Liz Durrett also appeared on the album.”

Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter - Reckless Burning

THIS is female vocals people. Jesse Sykes has the best female voice of anyone in modern music IMO. Her voice is full of air, it’s almost like a whisper that is sung at full volume and it’s not “perfect/clean” sounding there is a roughness and depth to it. A story behind the voice. Not just “pretty” like most female voices.

This is combined with a slow core Valium nightmare twist on country music. Country that is slowed way down with elements of something like “bar music” mixed in with lots of long drawn out twangy guitar riffs and a slow steady rollicking drum beat.

This album (and her follow up album “Oh My Gitl”) are in my top 3 list of saddest music of of all time. The title track “Reckless Burning” is absolutely heart wrenching like almost nothing else. Radiohead’s got nothing on this.

Haha, you're missing out. I guess I like sadness or something, 3 tracks in and it's great! Doesn't strike me as too sad and definitely an interesting take on country. Also agree her voice is great.

Thanks for this one @rhythmdevils ;)

    Agree with @loadexfa - I'm digging it.

Is there such a thing as too sad musically? Too cheesy sure, but I don't think a genuinely affecting song can be too (insert emotion here). Some songs I can only listen to once or twice a year, but they're medicine when I manage to...

I simply... didn't want to feel sad. Another day I'll risk it. Sometimes I feel fragile.

I was just wondering if you might be into braided neck beards. Nordic braided neck beards. No? How about the music, then...

Browsing The Guardian led me to these people, and I found I wanted to go on listening. Well, I was an Incredible String Band fan! This is like ISB transported to the dark, deep North.

this album got me through some rough times. I do not listen to it casually. It’s actually a really important album to me in its connection to things I’ve been through and certain memories.

I also feel lucky to have seen them live twice. Always a humbling experience when musicians are so vulnerable and honest on stage. Beautiful.

Ok this one is for @Thad E Ginathom to keep him off the brink. Very happy music. :)

Inner Visions - Street Corner Musicians

Roots reggae but by a modern band based in the states and with a little twist. The music is undecidedly roots reggae but the vocal delivery has elements of r&b mixed in. And maybe the music does too I don’t know nothings black and white. But the effect when combined with excellent song writing is really great and it’s a sound completely it’s own. Bass head heaven as the album is full of well written loud thick grooving bass lines. Groove in general is a good word to describe the sound of this music. Vocals are fantastic. Sound quality is good too.

I think this will appeal to people who aren’t into reggae necessarily so give it a spin.

only warning is the album starts off with some fairly cheesy sound effects (cheesy like the album cover). Please ignore and keep listening. This is just Jamaican culture. They love obnoxious noise. You should hear the ear killing stuff they play between (or in the middle of) sings on the radio. Like super loud cars crashing and stuff. Anyways don’t turn it off when you hear the cheesy echoey voice in the beginning of the first track. This is good stuff.

Also just a word of caution I heard one other album by them and it was terrible. I haven’t checked out the others on Qobuz it was so bad. But this album is a gem.

They’re not very well known. Interestingly Qobuz is the only music streaming service with the group. Good thing many if you have Qobuz subscriptions.

    Thanks :).

It's way past bedtime, but I'll get back to this.

Curious to know if you gave the Scandinavian guy a listen?

Do you remember the old (seriously elderly) Caribbean (?) guys who did a cover of I don't want to go to rehab? I don't know if I can find the name again now: it'll be way back in my youtube history. Magic.

Here is the Qobuz link for Thad's suggestion. I briefly listened on crappy speakers (the ones inside my computer screen), will give a proper listen later. Sounds cool!
