True fact, Dave Mason lives next door to me

Current day faves, Alex Cameron and Jen Cloher. I won't say no to a bit of Donny Benet either.

You're not having us on? Wow! I live next door to a dilapidated dairy that closed down fifty odd years ago.

Here's my pick for the day:

I think I have some lesser known recommendations in this category. No guarantee the accents will always be dripping of Oz though.

Do Re Mi - Warnings Moving Clockwise (1985)
Australia's primary contribution to the post-punk wave of the 80s. Sounds to me like a mix of late Blondie and early Siouxsie. 'Man Overboard' was a charting single in 1985, but I think this song has a way cooler video.

deadstar - Don't It Get You Down (1996)
Aussies try to do Britpop just as it's peaking. Their three mid-nineties releases would call for pretty much every alternative/indie rock trope in the book but I find some of their songs enjoyable regardless.

Fear Of Falling - Your Place (1990)
This one is so obscure I don't even have a little history blurb for it. It's super f'ing catchy jangle pop or something with a great backbeat though. Only released on LP to my knowledge.

    Clouds - Hieronymus (1991)
My personal favorite Aussie band. These guys tick so many boxes for me. Female-fronted? Check. Oddly seductive hip swaying in music videos? Check. Almost famous but never had an international break-through due to a combination of bad luck and poor label management? Check. If you have any affinity for 90s rock I highly recommend all of their albums.

    Bughouse - V for Vendetta (1989)
Sounds like indie pub rock but it's a song about domestic violence. Again, no digital/CD release which is a real shame. As catchy as every song above. The 'rage' logo present on some of these videos is from the Aussie-produced equivalent of MTV and is apparently still on the air to this day, which is nuts.

Ha Ha. I'm an American who actually likes Vegemite. I keep a jar at work, usually as a dare for the interns. The reactions are priceless.

    @k4rstar

You certainly seem to know what you're talking about. I dub thee an honorary Australian and from henceforth thou shalt be know as "Bruce".

Enjoyed your recommendations, Especially Hieronymous. Will have to track down some albums. Are there any that you particularly recommend.

btw, my reference to music with an "Australian accent" was an unclear attempt at a (poor) metaphor.

Deborah Conway, the lead singer from Do-Re-Mi, went on as a solo act. I enjoyed some of her stuff from the 90's.

Here's another group that was popular in the 90's: Powder Finger. This piece was called "DAF" as these are the chords that formed the basis of the song.

The front-man, Bernard Fanning, went on to have a solo career:

Spider Bait. Independent Aussie artists that got a lot of play on "JJJ" (youth oriented national government owned radio station that promoted smaller bands). This song is a cover of a ridiculous interlude from a British comedy show called "The Goodies", popular in Australia in the 70's and 80's. This clip makes me smile every time I see it.

Noice. It's always funny when people think that it's meant to be sweet and lay it on thick when it's actually savory.

    Here's my accented contribution. MAMMAL.
The accents are more pronounced when recorded live so check out their youtube page if you like these videos.

Perhaps my favourite musician has a THICK Australian accent. Also am Australian.

Not forgetting this TOWERING COLOSSUS of a tune from last year featuring Jimmy Barnes as the Transcendental Everyman.

Ross Wilson was the lead singing of two great Aussie bands of very different styles: Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock.
