The way Jason's described it, you can preview those effects right now for free using digital tools like iZotope Ozone Imager, or the ones built into VLC. What he's made for headphones is something that does it in a box and as part of the analogue chain. That's nice but doesn't compare to the proposition for speakers where you can expand your Gungnir/Yggdrasil/other analog source to 5.1.

For headphones it's not a full in spatializer like Waves NX or any of the HRTF models because it doesn't have the delayed / frequency dependent feed from right to left and left to right, and doesn't have the echos from room effects.

Surely I’m not the only one who noticed the CD player here. Is it released yet?

From what perspective can we say Syn is a much cheaper Smyth Realizer?

The audio track of most Netflix shows has a stereo and 5.1 option and I think adding a binaural headphone mix would definitely tempt me to keep my subscription.

    That’s my question as well.

Mine enroute currently. I’m hoping to piggy back this into my HT. I want connect the Ygdrassil to the analog in of Syn, and then use the discrete inputs to my AVR.

Aternative use is as a spatializer from the BF 2/64 to Utopia 2020s.

Might be complete unrelated, but there was a tubecad post from a while back about comboing stereo-mono controls and “tilt” controls on a headphone amplifier. I read it as a guy who was just looking for a kit to build so the actual tech went way over my head, but Syn scratches the same itch in terms of having a one box solution for volume control and stereo-mono mixing. Probably will need the Loki/Lokius too to achieve both. I’m assuming there’s no passive mode for using this as a potentiometer with remote?

The manual says there is such a mode; no lights.

Looks like the Sun manual answers my question about just using mains, a sub, and rear speakers. In the “stereo basics” section the manual implies a center is not necessary.

oddly enough, in the headphone basics section, the manual says you need headphones and speakers and amps. Hey @schiit , I assume that’s a mistake in the manual? I don’t thiink a peron needs speakers and amps to listen to headphones.

If its a stock hd800 a subwoofer goes a long way to help that missing lower end.

Honestly my first thought on this was “WTF, who’s going to buy this?”. But the more I read and hear about it, thinking I might replace my old Pioneer receiver at some point with one.

So do I understand that the sub output is low passed at 80Hz? Also I don’t see anything about filtering the mains when the Sub out is in use, is that right? Would have been cool if there was the option to filter the mains when a sub was plugged in…now I would have to try to figure that out manually with my sub crossover which is a pain in the ass and really hard to do properly.

Rel argues that filtering the lows from the mains is a waste of time. You might just try the Syn and not worry about that.

    reference: https://rel.net/blog/2021-03-24/pri...high-pass-filter-and-why-doesnt-rel-use-them/

I don't use Rel subs and don't agree with their reasoning (I use SVS, Cambridge Audio and DIY). I was just pointing out a counter argument to HPF.

Personally, I don't think will replaces an AVR (for me), but it does look interesting to expand a two channel system for those that don't stream into an AVR and want some immersive music occasionally.

The speakers are disconnected when a headphone is plugged in ("Plugging in headphones will mute all other outputs."). That's why I think having speakers listed in the headphone section of the manual might be an error.

Well, maybe this is the thing that makes folks like me switch to surround setups. I’ve always watched movies in stereo and never had the time to fiddle with multi-channel receivers. But with these prices…

It’s not a waste of time if is saves me the hassle of having to constantly f**k with the crossover point to get it sounding seamless. All I need to do then is get the level set where I like it.

For me it could be a great solution to do a 3.1 system, which is what I have setup now in my rec room. I don’t really care about surround at this point, but I do want a center channel so that dialog is intelligible and centred on my TV when I’m not in the perfect/centered seating position (which is almost never).

Basically, you are applying a HPF on your mains, which is not the most ideal thing. We know how filters work and alter things. I use a pro amp in my 2ch. setup and the amp has HPF, but when engaged, it severely mucks up the sound. So I just deal with the natural roll-off of the speaker. Most subs are not flat from the lows up to 80hz, so they usually blend in with the natural rolloff of whatever speakers you have and can be dialed in with sub level.

    • REL Method FOR Music. Carries over distortion characteristics of the mains amp to the subs for better integration. What @Azimuth said: HPF can wreck the sound of mains for high quality recorded music.
    • LPF/HPF Method FOR HT. Lowest distortion for explosions and high SPL sounds.

    Still waiting.....

My thought exactly. This, a Vidar and a few Rekkrs or Gjallarhorms would probably be a perfect replacement for my aging Yamaha 5.1 receiver. OTOH a new A/V receiver that handles video switching as well might be a better path. Gives me something to think about though.

There are a couple of advantages - more power reserve in your L & R amp if you are kinda close to their capacity; and maybe more importantly, so many speakers emphasize 100-ish Hz area to cover up for the fact that they are already -3 dB at 60 Hz or worse. HPF at 80 Hz should completely or nearly cure this,

Video switching for me can be done in my TV (4 HDMI inputs). Learning remote (Logitech) means I can switch sources on the TV and still control the volume etc from a separate device like Syn without any hassle.

I think this mode just turns off the surround channels and any processing, so the input signal will still be put through the discrete amplifier. There doesn’t seem to be a switch to make this an I/O with remote controlled volume control, which would’ve made this a cool alternative for the SYS (albeit without output switching or stepped attenuators like the preamp products).
