Use it the other way around. The Jotunheim begs to be used as a preamp. I do like not colored preamps.

Say I eventually want to run the Jotun balanced, would I be better off getting the dac that pairs with it, or saving up for a modi multibit down the line?

That may be correct. The BW is the warmest amp in the EC lineup, on par with the prior iteration of the ZD. The ZD Super is actually less warm than the BW; although with the tweaks to the BW2, it could be different. I haven't directly compared them.

Something to consider is with the DAC plug-in card, you'd be limited to only USB.

I would get the best most synergistic amp I could get regardless of balanced or not. I am assuming there is a well implemented phase splitter circuit for SE inputs. FWIW, I preferred the Moby to the built-in DS.

Of the Schiit amps, would you still recommend the Lyr 2 or Mjolnir 2 as upgrades for a HE-560 playdoh-type headphone?

    I second that. I think that's all that's needed, you're nominated @Marvey :p

I know that RMAF was the last target for the two-channel gear, but can you provide any further details on those products now after Jotunheim's release?

From 2015 Chapter 20: Looking Forward to 2016:

Last update I remember was that the preamp was basically done (remote control confirmed and no headphone amp functionality) and good progress had been made on the second speaker amp prototype, which presumably is a souped-up version of the Jotunheim topology? Noticed this nugget in the recent Jotunheim chapter:

If your eventual goal is to get a balanced DAC(like Gungnir) to go with your amp then I would go with the cheaper option. In general I think it's not a good idea to get the 2nd most expensive option if you can't get the most expensive one because it will take much longer to get there. Only go for #2 if you plan to settle there.

BTW, the DAC in the Jotunheim is balanced.

I'm curious if there is an advantage (beyond the increase in power) running an amp (Jotunheim) in balanced mode with a DAC (Modi Multibit) that is single ended.

Very interested in Marvey's notes about Jotunheim as I figured it might be a giant-killer. New topology and...I figured Jason's excitement wasn't just about the modules.

Problem over on the other site is a whole bunch of them equated price with performance, instantly forgetting who made the product. Seems most of them don't know Schiit!

Jotunheim stands up to ZDS and doesn't back down.

Yes, please, the heptagon between the Valhalla 2 and Jotunheim would be very informative. :) Most intersted in extension, dynamics, smoothness/liquidity/not-dry-and-roughness. Or Mjolnir 2. Or Rag. Or Lyr 2. Or all of the above. Actually, just lump them all in one chart, since those are the Schiit amps I've heard and an interested enough in the heptagon to see exactly where the Jot sits.

I'm trying to figure out a level playing field. First pass - I have Yggdrasil feeding balanced to Jotunheim and SE to ZDS. Modded 650 SE cable only. Haven't tried 800S yet.

Awesome rig, I'm imagining how lil' Jotunheim must look on top of big ass Yggdrasil. Real interesting comparing it with the ZDS, that's one beast of a setup Joti is fighting against.

Marv is busy planning a mini meet and probably still working on the big international sbaf meet, so we'll need to be patient gents

I'll be buying one regardless, but I've got to wait for mah new credit card to show up, want this to count towards the money I've got to spend to get my bonus miles haha

I wish we could have tried something like this at the Schiit Show. Running the Yggdrasil into Jotun would give an honest assessment of Jotun's capability as an amp. Ditto running Jotun as a source/pre into Rag.
