I just purchased the saga a few months ago from Schiit US, and got the plastic remote too.

Besides the long cable run issue, if the output stage of your source and the input stage on your power amp lack any sort of buffer, you can run into roll off issues. That's unlikely though.

Also if your source has a DC offset, a well designed power buffer can eliminate it. A passive stage would just pass that through.

Passive doesn't go well with looooong interconnects, right? In that case LISST would be your only non-tube option.

So I may have missed this during my search of this thread, but has anyone tried using their Saga preamp in passive mode in reverse, so as to have it act like a switch for the 5 SE RCA input pairs used as outputs to different headphone amps? It says on the Schiit website that the SYS passive-only preamp can be used as a switch for one SE RCA pair as the input to two SE RCA pairs as the switched outputs. However, it does not say anything regarding the Saga.

I emailed Schiit and asked, but the response I got was it might... I would have to just try and see. Anyone tried that on their Saga yet (in passive mode with the volume turned all the way up)? I know that I could use RCA splitters or buy a Goldpoint RCA 1 to 4 switch, but I think I would get the Saga (or Freya) if the switching capability was there.

I have my fingers crossed that someone with a Saga (and/or a Freya) might try hooking it up in reverse in passive mode (with the volume all the way up) and see if it will act as a switch to multiple amps... if not, I will have to order one and see.

Any volunteers to see if it will work in reverse as a switch like the SYS passive preamp (as stated on the Schiit web page)?

Ok so I tried this out. It did work to switch between inputs, using them as outputs. I fed Freya output into one of the outputs on Saga, and running one of the inputs from Saga into Vidar (Saga in passive mode, volume maxed out, controling volume with Freya). When I switched inputs on Saga, the sound shut off. Then when I moved Vidar over to that new input, the sound returned.

That said, I didn’t have much time to do any critical listening. I did detect what seemed like a slight reduction in dynamics, but this may have been due to a slight volume reduction, not sure. If I have a chance at some point in the next few days I’ll see if I can do a bit more listening and measure the SPLs with some pink noise.

Wow, neat! I know that I could use RCA splitters, but I would like to switch between my Torpedo III, Massdrop CTH, Massdrop LCX, and later the Massdrop THX. I think this would also avoid the distortion issue that some are encountering when they are using the RCA pass-throughs to feed additional amps.

And since all those headphone amps have their own volume control, I was just planning on using one preamp in reverse as the switch... I was thinking the Saga, unless the Freya had better dynamics in passive reverse mode.

I appreciate you giving this a try. I am not sure why Schiit did not try it out for me (as it is their product and they state the SYS can be used as a switch), but I think they are busy and considered my inquiry to be silly.

    Thanks again, Gray

I was wondering if anyone got the metal remote with a recent saga purchase? I was under the impression it came with both since that's what was posted, I only got the plastic one, I honestly don't mind paying for a metal one just not sure if I was supposed to get one or not.

I talked about this a long time ago on some other places back when I purchased a Saga, but essentially I think I had a grounding issue in my system as it was 'popping' my speakers quite badly when I introduced it into my chain as a preamp. None of my other gear did this, and I did try to fix any issue I might have had... perhaps I really did receive two defective units? I think the easier explanation is there was a issue with my system, but that begs the question, why did none of my other gear/preamps cause such massive popping?

Anyway, I now use a Pass Labs xp-10 line stage, love this thing.

When I ordered my saga I got the plastic remote. I emailed schiit to ask if the metal one was supposed to ship with it and they said only freya comes with the metal remote.

Might anyone know if Saga's ground reference is floated, or possibly asymmetrical?

I'm trying to use a quasi-balanced RCA>XLR cable from my Saga to power amp but it gives a weird oscillating noise through my speakerswhen I turn the amp on.

    Thanks!

Anyone thought of a cool way to cover the hole on Saga when running tubeless? I had some hum when running passive but since i switched to xlr from Yggdrasil with some input transformers it is gone and i prefer the sound in passive.

Haha that is nice, have to be careful with watering it then but it doesn't happen too often :)
Bottlehead should make a figure out of their logo, or maybe one of those from Fallout would be cool.
