I play cello, but I jjust have a "cheap" chinese cello. Its one of the better ones, a Samual Shen, but nothing like some other cellos. Pretty good though, payed 1.2k for it used, its around 2k new. Its a pretty decent cello, especially after the upgrades my cello teacher applied. Got a pretty nice bow too.

Dog toy. Has squeakers though, so it could fit. I would have included the piano in the background as a member of the quartet though...

Ahh, dog toy! When everything starts to look like a cat it is probably time to see a vet. Err... doc.

My musical instruments , or at least the ones I used to play, have all gone rusty from being in the Chennai flood. That is, my box of morsings, South-Indian Jews Harps. One day, I'll get out the wire brush and emery and see if they can be saved. Probably can.

I'm a Rochester dweller too. The nice thing about the school is the theater and Java's right up the street.

I studied Cello at Hochstein, just across town, many many many moons ago. But I switched to bass guitar, because I thought it was cooler....

Yeah, I used to take cello lessons from a guy there, Diego Garcia, but he moved away, so now I take lessons a bit further away. I'm from Fairport, so don't go to the city that much.

I design instruments actually, and my main guitar is one of my own designs that I made with Oakland Axe Factory.

It's the same as Dean Murphy's Falcon 8 string:

    that's my design :D

Grabbed this recently: Ibanez S5521Q in Nebula Green Burst. I'm a sucker for green quilted maple.

Just bought this yesterday, Brand new, $150.
Fender Squire Vintage Modified Jaguar Special bass.

I ordered new strings and am going to tune it C-G-D-A like a cello so I know how to play it.

With my Yamaha PA amp and PA cab with a yamaha horn tweeter and a JBL 2226h 15" woofer. PIcked up 2 cabs and the amp for only $50 total.
    So whole setup only $200.

OK, here's [one of] mine! Possibly the cheapest instrument on the thread, at around a couple of USD.

<Once upon a time there was something called tinypic that was free. And then there wasn't>

You can call it a Jews harp, jaw harp, or one of its many other names, but this is a specific one from Southern India, and it goes by the name of Morsing. It is used in Carnatic music.

The "1" indicates that it is tuned to "Sa," sort-of equivalent to C. Yes, there is one for every pitch, and yes, I have a boxful of them. Fine tuning is done by adding or removing bees' wax at the tip, hence the lumpy appearance.

I haven't played in quite a few years, not even practised. An hour of playing, now, would take the skin off my plucking finger. Been there, done that, in the past: practice is not just for musical accomplishment!

My boxful was full of muddy flood water back in December, and there is quite a lot of rust. This one, though, shows that it just needs a wire brush for full recovery. Oh, and a good soaking in IPA: I bet some of those flood-water germs are still around!

Ha, yeah me too.. mine was "Cortez" brand p-bass copy that I got for $40 from a pawn shop in high school. Horrible bass and I didn't know how to use the strobe tuner that my band director let me use so for the first few weeks it was not tuned correctly, I played totally by ear.

Mine was a cobbled active Fender P/J where the active electronics were fried, so I tried using it "passively". And it was so horrible sounding. Silly 17yo me not realizing if I spent $60 more (I think I paid $60ish for that pile of garbage), I could have swapped out for passive pickups.

I did exactly what @spwath is doing now, going for a classically trained cellist, to an electric bass player. And all I have to say is hang on to your cello....

I'll have to snap a pic at my next practice. Good stuff, everyone. @spwath I'm glad you took the plunge! I imagine at some point you'll want to really learn the bass the right way, thus allowing you to actually play with others, take lessons, study off of a book or Youtube, etc. But hopefully it will give you a taste of the sounds and articulation you can get out of this new instrument.

I'm self-taught on bass and guitar and I recommend all new players take some lessons to at least start out with good technique and knowledge base. I would have learned a lot faster had I taken even a few lessons at the beginning or at any point along the way.

I will. I'm continuing taking lessons from Lars Kirvan, who was (might still be) principle cello of rpo
Plan to play in college as well.

As a change from the strings, here's my 1963 Conn 10M. Apparently during this period, these were known as the 'Artist', so I have the 'Conn Artist' - it cost me enough cash, so that makes sense. I was learning since 2009 but plateaued and lost interest, now I'm trying to get back into it. Muscle memory remains, so perhaps I should get tooting and join a band or something this time.
