I'll give it a shot... never rooted a phone before and so little risk if I brick this circa 2011 phone...

It's not usually difficult, though I'm having to jump through some hoops for the Nexus One. I'd forgotten that HTC had gotten all crazy about making it hard to unlock the bootloader. The Nexus S has a one-click unlocker, and most Samsung devices ended up with those too.

    The steps are usually

    1. Unlock the bootloader, if necessary
    2. Flash a custom recovery
    3. Write the ROM & kernel to the SDCARD (whether it's removable or not)
    4. Reboot into the custom recovery
    5. Use the recovery to flash the ROM and then the kernel
    6. Use the recovery to wipe the data & cache partitions
    7. Reboot
    8. Win!

Sounds like it's involved, but it's pretty simple really. "Flashing" really just means writing a prepared image file to a partition of the storage on the device.

Why not use Airplay in ios devices instead of bubbleupnp? I use Volumio on a Allo digione and like the simplicity of Airplay better than bubbleupnp.

AirPlay isn’t supposed to sound as good as the various UPNP apps. I haven’t a/b’ed them I’m just taking their word for it. It’s great for movies though.

I received the Samsung S10e. I can’t figure out how to easily unlock the f'ing thing without pressing the side buttons. It’s not like the identical looking iPhone X where you just touch the screen and swipe up. I can t find any google terms to figure it out. Open and unlock lead to batteries and unlocking the carrier.

it also won’t install any apps from the play store. And the google help pages either don’t work or don’t apply to my version of android. (There’s no “clear cache” button in the play store preferences for example. Though I doubt that’s the issue because it is new just wiped.

    haha. World of pain.

upside is that my DAC was broken with a loose connection that was making Mconnect worse than it actually is. It’s still crap but usable crap.

In December my old Samsung A5 2016 died. The Android updates almost bricked it and the charger port in the phone, USB-C was broken.

As a best new option I bought the Nokia 5.3. I had to be quick and it had to be available on short notice for my job. Not a bad phone, quite big too. On thing I miss in the new smartphone designs is the lack of a home/menu button. That button really made it easy to switch tasks and applications. Now I have to swipe. Now imagine a future with smartphones all with swiping motions for controls and Instagram is already annoying.

A very kind member reached out and helped me with a work around. I just installed bubbleupnp from the online play store. Worked great. So far bubbleupnp isn't flawless as I wanted it to be but it's mostly just one very minor annoyance- when you click on an artist it doesn't just show you the albums, top tracks, ep's etc all in the same screen you have to click again to see all their albums. But that's being fussy. The rest seems much more stable than Mconnect or Volumio.

The biggest annoyance is using a bloody android phone.

I'm curious who copied who with the s10e as it looks exactly like the iphoneX but with poorer construction and a less reachable screen off button. I'm guessing Samsung copied the design. Kind of shameless how close it is.

Good grief, I didn't know they were going that way!

But... My Lenovo tablet is on Android 10, and it still has buttons, albeit on-screen buttons, which is fine with me. Might you find that a different launcher gives you control in the way that you want to control it? Or some other rooting/customisation?

I think I read that Nokia are perma-locking their bootloader. No rooting for Nokia. Pity... I was considering buying one.

I don't know what I'd say with these phones. It's tough right now. It is challenging to choose a smartphone because they all have so many functions, of which indeed half of them you do not know, and you have no idea which would fit better. So only headaches. However, when I went to get a phone, she was very passionate about Instagram, so the consultants helped me. I chose a phone ideally linked with Instagram and the same with similar functions. I was delighted with the quality of the pictures, and I posted them on Instagram. Still, they appeared pre many followers, and I removed them with [Mod Edit: Link Removed] Effective.
